Tonight ABC kicks off the new mystery/thriller/family drama Emergence. While ABC didn’t provide a screener for the series, they did make the first 9 minutes of the series available to watch on their web site, and I was hooked after checking it out this short preview. I am looking forward to seeing the full episode tonight!

Small-town police chief Jo Evans (Allison Tolman, Fargo) is at home with her 14-year-old daughter Mia (Ashley Aufderheide, The Slap) and father Ed (Clancy Brown, Earth 2) when there is a sudden, short, town-wide power outage. The outage also temporarily knocks out all electronic devices, causing a small plane to crash. When Jo heads to the crash site to investigate, she finds a mysterious young girl named Piper (Alexa Swinton), who has no memory of who she is or what happened. It’s unclear if she was part of the crash, but she doesn’t have a scratch on her. Jo brings Piper to the hospital to get her checked out but soon discovers that there are people posing as government agents who are looking for the girl. Jo decides to take Piper in to protect her until she can figure out more about this conspiracy surrounding who this girl is and what’s happening. But while the two are in the car, they start to experience some strange phenomena, and it seems like Piper may be the source.

Every year, at least one of the networks seems to have one of these high-concept mystery/thrillers in their new fall lineup, always trying to recreate the magic of Lost. And while many of them don’t make it, I always end up watching and enjoying these shows. This one has an interesting premise and a great cast, and I hope it sticks around. The cast also includes many recognizable TV faces, including Owain Yeoman (The Mentalist) as Benny Gallagher, Robert Bailey Jr. (The Night Shift) as Officer Chris Minetto, Zabryna Guevara (New Amsterdam) as Abby Fraiser, and Donald Faison (Scrubs) as Alex Evans.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, we got a chance to talk about the series with the executive producer and some of the show’s amazing cast. Check out our videos from the press room at NoReruns.net.

Don’t miss tonight’s premiere on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Bless This Mess, mixed-ish, black-ish, This Is Us, The Resident, and USA Network’s preview of Treadstone.

Last week’s NCIS focused on two main story lines. First, the case, in which a homeless couple (the man in army fatigues) were shocked when a body fell off the overpass right near their tent and landed on a fence pike. Ouch. Turned out the victim was one of a team of five who had taken down a major terrorist a few years before, and while two of them died during the operation, the other three ended up stealing about three million dollars from the terrorist. Our guys thought they were dealing with the victim’s wife, but she turned out to be an imposter – the foreign former girlfriend of one of the other men – who was in the victim’s house trying to find the brooch the soldiers had bought overseas before coming home (worth $2.8 million!). In the end, of course, they got the killer woman before she could leave the country.

But the other story line was Gibbs, who seemed distracted right from the start and who actually left a crime scene in the middle of the investigation. He called Grace (the psychiatrist, played by the fantastic Laura San Giacomo, who needs her own spin-off of this show!), and they met at a bar. He told her about killing the man who’d killed his family, about telling his team about it the week before, and finally told her he wanted her to drive him to the police station to turn himself in. He was concerned about what his team would think of him now – and honestly, I was a bit irritated with the way McGee and Bishop acted to him, which sort of confirmed his worries. And although Grace convinced him not to turn himself in, she also brought up the subject about his retiring, which he quickly shot down. So I guess we’ll see in tonight’s finale if McGee and Bishop stop looking at him like they don’t know who he is anymore and realize nothing has changed. Of course, from the description and title of tonight’s episode, it’s still going to be part of the central story line!

On tonight’s episode, “Daughters,” former FBI Agent Tobias Fornell pleads with Gibbs to do whatever is necessary to take down drug dealers and suppliers in the area after his daughter, Emily Fornell, is hospitalized from an opiate overdose. Gibbs is haunted by the personal aspects of the case and his history with vigilante justice.

Find out if Fornell loses his daughter and how Gibbs & his team handle his past tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing American Housewife, MasterChef Junior, Blood & Treasure, & Chopped.

The Sara Carter story line on NCIS was a good one last week. It showed a sweet side of Reeves, when we learned about him and his mom being homeless for a bit when he was young and how he now helps out at a home for homeless vets and their kids. It all ended up being about a mother trying to protect her daughter from pain, since Sara’s mother was trying to find out where her daughter’s migraine pain meds disappeared to and in the process realized there was a big prescription drug theft ring going on and that’s why she was killed. But it was good for Sara to finally get some peace about her mother’s murder.

Last week was also Pauley Perrette’s next-to-last episode. I thought we’d get more of an Abby-centric story, so I was disappointed with the little Abby we got. Sure, it was fun seeing the others buttering her up to try to snag the second spot for dinner at a new ice restaurant that she won reservations for. But until the very end of the episode, it was just another normal ep for Abby. Of course, the end… After she picked Reeves to go with her to dinner, they were walking away when a guy with a gun demanded they give him their wallet & purse. Reeves immediately complied, but Abby, with her big heart, tried to tell the guy that she could and wanted to help him. Reeves gave him Abby’s purse, but the guy still got off a shot when the screen went black.

So did Abby get shot? Reeves? Did it miss them both? Surely they wouldn’t actually kill Abby off, would they? And will we finally get an Abby & Gibbs scene this season?! I guess we’ll find out tonight!

On tonight’s episode, “Two Steps Back,” when evidence reveals an NCIS team member is a hitman’s latest target, the team must search through old case files to determine who is seeking vengeance.

See if Abby’s actually the hitman’s target tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Roseanne, Chicago Med, Chopped, & NCIS: New Orleans.

Tonight, the first season of FOX’s hilarious comedy, LA to Vegas, comes to an end. In last week’s episode, Captain Dave insisted that he was over his breakup with Patricia. However, while giving one of his in-flight ads for an escape room-slash-wedding chapel, he lost it, going on an anti-love tirade over the loudspeaker to the passengers. In his anger, he broke a warning light on the flight deck, causing the plane to be grounded for repairs. So he headed off to the casino with Artem and Colin, where he found himself on a roll at the craps table. And with all his winnings, Dave decided that he was going to buy an engagement ring for Patricia. Meanwhile, Ronnie talked to Nichole about Bryan asking her to move in with him. Ronnie was afraid to take this next step, so she started to make a pros and cons list. But when Bryan showed up at the gate, Ronnie told him she wanted to move in with him.

Will Captain Dave go through with his proposal to Patricia, and if so, how will she respond? Is Dave really the marrying kind? How will Ronnie’s decision to move to Las Vegas to live with Bryan change her future? And with everyone else seemingly finding love, when will it be Colin’s turn? I’ve really enjoyed the first season of this wacky airline comedy and look forward to seeing how things are left in tonight’s finale. I really hope this show comes back for another season!

On tonight’s episode, “The Proposal,” Ronnie applies for a job at another airline; against Nichole’s wishes, Dave plans to propose to Patricia; Artem encourages Colin to stand up to his ex-wife.

See where the gang leaves off for the season tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, black-ish, Rise, New Girl, The Flash, The 100, and Legion.

Thank goodness the Gabriel Hicks story line on NCIS is over. The best part of the episode had to be the creepy killer (Paul Triff) who used to live in McGee’s apartment. He was back last week, after we learned that he’d been Hicks’s cellmate. He agreed to tell them anything Hicks had told him, but only if he got to spend some time in the apartment. So McGee sent his family away, brought in a cage for Triff to stay in, and cleared the apartment of anything that pointed to McGee having a family. Triff was kind of hysterical, and in the end, he saved McGee’s life when Hicks showed up and tried to shoot him. We nearly saw the end of Fornell when Hicks kidnapped him, but Fornell got himself free in the trunk, crawled up through back seat, and started strangling him from behind until he crashed the car. They fought and Hicks nearly got the best of him, but Gibbs was there and used Fornell’s Taser and zapped him, saving the day. Of course!

On tonight’s episode, “Handle with Care,” Gibbs and the team work to clear the name of retired Marine Sergeant John Ross (Drew Carey, who in real life served in the Marine Reserves for six years) when cyanide is found in one of the hundreds of care packages he sends to active-duty Marines.

See how they clear Ross’s name tonight on CBS at 8/7c.
