Early this morning, Netflix gave its viewers an early holiday treat…more of the hilarious baking competition Nailed It!. This new program, Nailed It! Holiday, has all the fun of the regular series but with holiday-themed tasks. I absolutely loved the first season of this series. Host Nicole Byer is a riot as she jokes around with the contestants and keeps things light. She often breaks the fourth wall, talking to the producer and teasing her more straight-laced co-host, professional chef Jacques Torres. The series pits amateur bakers against one another in a competition to win $10K. They are given far too little time to try to recreate ridiculously intricate desserts and more often than not fail to nail it! But watching them try to do so is so much fun. I can wait to see what new celebrity guest judges and holiday-themed challenges are in store!

Check it out now on Netflix!

I’ll also be watching/recording Fresh Off the Boat and The Cool Kids.

Last year, Netflix joined in the game of making holiday-themed movies like those romantic comedies and dramas that flood Lifetime and Hallmark this time of year. One of Netflix’s immensely popular original films last winter was A Christmas Prince, and today the streaming service launches the sequel, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding.

In the original film, American magazine journalist Amber Moore (Rose McIver, iZombie) was sent to the nation of Aldovia to cover the story of playboy Prince Richard (Ben Lamb, The White Queen), who was set to take the throne following his father’s recent death. There were rumors that he might abdicate, so Amber started snooping through the castle, where she was mistaken for young Princess Emily’s new tutor. Amber decided to run with that and use her new position to investigate the rumors. She uncovered evidence that Richard had been adopted, and this caused a contention as to the proper heir to the throne. By the end, Emily and Richard had both fallen in love with Amber, despite her initial dishonesty, and Richard was ultimately deemed the proper heir. Amber went back home to start a popular blog about Richard and her adventures, but as there is always a happy ending in these stories, on New Year’s Eve, Richard showed up at Amber’s father’s diner and proposed to her.

Tonight the story continues. It’s been nearly a year since the proposal, and the couple is planning a Christmas wedding. However, some wrenches are thrown into their plans – a political crisis puts the kingdom in jeopardy, and Amber starts to question whether she has it in her to be a queen. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that everything probably works out in the end and the happy couple will tie the knot! I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but I always get sucked into watched these predictable but fun holiday TV movies. I really enjoyed the first A Christmas Prince, so I’m looking forward to checking out the sequel tonight. Netflix has been making some really great holiday films this year! Last week’s The Christmas Chronicles is another fun one to check out!

Check out this fun Christmas flick now on Netflix!

Jenny’s Choice #1

I am loving season two of The Guest Book. It really threw me at first when I realized they’d switched locations and half the cast, but really, Eddie and Vivian really are fantastic all on their own. Add in the very mismatched couple of Nikki & Tommy and cutie Bodhi, and it’s made for a really fun season so far. My favorite part of last week was when Vivian convinced Bodhi to come stay with her and he found her hidden camera in the tissue box in the bathroom. Somehow she made him think someone from the store had put the camera in there. *snicker* I thought she was going to faint (or have a big O) on the spot when he said the way to get back at them was to…well, pleasure himself in front of the camera so they had to see it. That would serve them right! Ha! That whole scene was hysterical.

The guests have been fun this season too. The “drug rehabilitation” people I think were my favorites – or rather, that story line. I also really loved that they brought back Michael Rapaport’s character from last season. And of course, I’m on pins and needles to see when or if the scorpion is going to strike!

On tonight’s episode, “Invisible Son,” Clem asks a stripper to pretend to be his girlfriend in order to convince his vacationing family that he is normal. Once they get to Bare Feet Retreat we discover that Clem’s fake girlfriend isn’t the only thing he’s been lying about. Lexi Ainsworth, Lisa Rinna, Matthew Willig, Pete Davidson, & Tipper Newton guest star.

To see what else Clem lied about, tune in to TBS at 10:30/9:30c.

Daredevil Season 3 Recommendation!

So admittedly, not every season that Netflix puts out in their corner of the MCU is a smash hit, but they were coming in hot off the second season of Iron Fist when they dropped Daredevil season three a few weeks back. The prior season had served to be more a Punisher vehicle than a strict “Matt Murdock” story. I gotta be honest though… After this latest saga about the “Man Without Fear,” I am super amped for whatever ninja baton to the face that Netflix MCU throws at us next.

Speaking of things thrown at us, there are two major villains in this season, both Bullseye and the previously infamous stigma: Kingpin. Bullseye has this superhuman power to hit anything perfectly on target, no matter what crazy ricochet it requires. He’s a legit real main bad guy for Murdock, as per the comics, so this was a good look. Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk is back up to evil, despite being locked up after season one of this show.

At the end of Defenders season one, we saw that somehow Matt had escaped certain doom (that killed Elektra) to be rescued by a bevy of nuns. This Daredevil season picks up right there and toys with themes from the classic “Born Again” comic book arc from the mid-1980s. With Mother Maggie taking care of Matt as he recovers, Foggy & Karen are out there fighting the evils of NYC as a lawyer & reporter can. We learn a lot about the background of these central characters with the biggest reveals coming about Murdock himself.

While we’re on the topic, here’s what’s news for the MCU in general… There are no current plans for Defenders season 2, but an eventual return to the title with different characters is being teased by Jeph Loeb; for some reason Jessica Jones season 3 is still in production, and Punisher season two is due in the spring; Iron Fist & Luke Cage have both been canceled, but there are hopes that they may merge into a single Heroes For Hire title. Last interesting little factoid I discovered in researching for this blog: Matt Murdock was NEVER a member of the “Defenders” in the comic book, but Hulk, Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, & Namor all were.

I don’t wanna spoil too much, but I do want to encourage you to watch this season if you haven’t yet. On a night like tonight, with very little new on to watch, maybe consider binging Daredevil season 3!

Early this morning, Netflix released the first season of the new series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is based on the iconic comic book characters. Set in the small town of Greendale, where it seems like Halloween every day, the series centers around the life of teenage half-witch Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka, Mad Men). After her parents died in an accident, Sabrina was raised by her witch aunts – the bubbly and nurturing Hilda (Lucy Davis, The Office (UK)), and her stricter, more serious sister Zelda (Miranda Otto, 24: Legacy) – who run a mortuary along with Sabrina’s cousin Ambrose (Chance Perdomo), a necromancer who’s been under house arrest and unable to leave the property for the past 75 years.

Sabrina seems like your average teenager – she enjoys hanging out with her boyfriend Harvey (Ross Lynch, Austin & Ally) and best friends Roz (Jaz Sinclair, Paper Towns) and Susie (Lachlan Watson, Nashville). But she has magical abilities, which she often uses to secretly help her friends – such as to teach the misogynistic high school principal (Bronson Pinchot, Perfect Strangers) a lesson when he refuses to stop Susie from getting bullied. As her 16th birthday approaches, Sabrina has an important decision to make – she must choose between the Path of Night or the Path of Light. If she undergoes her dark baptism to become a full-fledged witch, she will need to leave her human life and friends behind and head off to the Academy of Unseen Arts. However, if she doesn’t get baptized, she will grow old and eventually lose her powers. There also seems to be some other unknown ramifications to this decision that Sabrina isn’t aware of. A mysterious witch (Michelle Gomez, Doctor Who) arrives to town, disguising herself as one of the Baxter High faculty members, and uses her powers to try to influence Sabrina into embracing her darker side, trying to steer her toward her baptism. Meanwhile, the three Weird Sisters – Prudence (Tati Gabrielle, The 100), Agatha (Adeline Rudolph), & Dorcas (Abigail F. Cowen, The Fosters) – who are students at the Academy, don’t want a half-blood joining their ranks and try to dissuade Sabrina from taking her oath. To help her make an informed decision, Sabrina’s aunts seek the assistance of high priest Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle, Coupling), but he also seems to be hiding something and has ulterior motives. And to make matters worse, there may be someone in town hunting witches.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a fun mix of teenage drama and supernatural thriller, with a healthy dose of humor thrown in to keep it from getting too dark. Originally the character of Sabrina was supposed to show up on Riverdale, but they decided instead to spin her off into her own series, which is a much wiser choice. While this series has a similar overall tone to Riverdale, the supernatural elements would have felt odd and out of place in that show’s more grounded reality. The cast of this show is excellent. Kiernan Shipka is delightful as Sabrina – though it’s a little strange to see her all grown up because I’ll always think of her as the young Sally Draper from Mad Men. Plus it’s always great to see Michelle Gomez in another deliciously evil role! I look forward to seeing how this season plays out, and with a second season already ordered, there’s plenty more adventures to come!

Check out the complete first season now on Netflix!

I’ll also be watching/recording Child Support.
