If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/17/18

Jenny’s Choice

SEAL Team returned last week, and it was packed full of action and emotion. Mandy wasn’t with the team, on a mission of her own in Mexico. She was there questioning a man named Fausto about a missing DEA agent. I wasn’t too invested in the story line, given that she wasn’t with the team. But I’m wondering if that’ll be a future mission for Bravo Team. Speaking of Bravo, they were in Saudi Arabia for their mission – one of the old tunnel systems at the heart of the largest water source in the country had been taken over by Shiite Extremists. Together with the Saudi military, they had to work to stop them.

Back at home, Ray was having to make a decision about waiting to get back on Bravo or applying to another team – Charlie. Also, Jason took his daughter on her first college tour, which was great because their relationship has had its up and downs, and given what happened at the end of the episode, they may need that bond to be stronger soon. I think my favorite part of the episode, though, was Clay and Stella having dinner with her parents…who were both clearly anti-military or whatever. They were pretty uppity and snotty, but Clay was calm and clearly let them know he was more than they were assuming he was. I think it was the sexiest I’ve ever found him. He’s clearly growing more mature as the series goes on.

And now to the scary part of the episode… In the closing moments, a cop knocked on Jason’s door, asking if he was Jason Hayes. “I’m sorry to have to tell you this. It’s your wife. There’s been an accident.” Even though they weren’t happily married anymore, Jason clearly still loves Alana. And they have two teenage kids, so if she is severely injured or dead, it’s going to knock the three of them on their behinds. And how will Jason handle that? I mean, with his job and everything. So many questions!

On tonight’s episode, “The Worst of Conditions,” after tragedy strikes, Jason is faced with a huge decision regarding his future with Bravo Team.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/16/18

Jenny’s Choice

The other night, I binge-watched 8 episodes of SEAL Team. For some reason, it built up on our DVR and I finally sat down to watch…and I couldn’t stop. I love this show. Last episode started exactly where the previous episode left off: with Jason and half the team going down in flames after their helicopter was hit with a SAM (surface-to-air missile). Thankfully all of the team themselves survived, although they lost the pilots – and, we came to learn late in the episode after a hurt Jason went searching for him on his own, their HVT, Nouri Halani, who lived for a while but then died from his injuries. Jason suffered a leg injury, which he took multiple shots of morphine for in order to go after Halani, and a bad concussion, which caused him to hallucinate several major conversations with one of the dead pilots – at one point, I thought he was seeing the guy as a younger version of himself, with his dad’s name, wife’s name, etc. In the end, the rest of the team was able to make it back to them, help stave off all the enemies who made their way to kill them, and take out the bunker that held the SAM, thereby letting the rescue helicopters finally make their way to the team. And I gotta say, it was awesome seeing Clay step up and take control before the rest of the team got back. He did a fantastic job!

Tonight is the season finale. Lots of story lines to watch out for… Jason is determined to find proof that Cutter is in bed with the Afghanis and behind the death of Echo Team. I can’t imagine much time has elapsed between the helicopter crash and tonight’s ep, so he won’t be over the concussion, which will make it hard for him to do what he feels like he needs to do. Then there’s the huge amount of chemistry we’ve seen lately between Clay and Davis, who are both feeling the pressures of deployment on their relationships with Stella and Danny. I love Clay and Stella, but even I can’t deny the connection he and Davis have had lately.

On tonight’s episode, “The Cost of Doing Business,” after Jason lies about the severity of his concussion to get cleared for combat, he and the SEAL Team plan a final mission to avenge Echo Team’s deaths once and for all before they return home from deployment.

See if Jason and his team can find out for sure who was behind Echo Team’s death and if they all make it home from deployment tonight on CBS at 9:01/8:01c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/6/17

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Syfy kicks of the new dark comedy Happy!, based on the graphic novel of the same name. The series follows Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni, Law & Order: SVU) a drunk, disgraced ex-super-cop who now works as a hit man for hire. After things go awry with one of his jobs, Nick finds himself the target of various criminal organizations, all of whom want him dead. One of the men looking for Nick is mobster Francisco Scaramucci (Ritchie Coster, Shades of Blue), known as Mr. Blue, who sends his demented henchman Smoothie (Patrick Fischler, Twin Peaks, Once Upon a Time) to capture and torture Sax. Mr. Blue also has leverage on members of the NYPD, including Det. Meredith McCarthy (Lili Mirojnick, Beerfest), who has a mysterious past with Sax. Meanwhile, a little girl named Hailey has been kidnapped, and her mother Amanda (Medina Senghore) is desperately looking for answers. However, Hailey has sent her imaginary friend Happy (Patton Oswalt, The Goldbergs, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), a blue winged horse with a horn, to find Sax to help her. At first Sax thinks Happy is a delusion of his intoxication but soon realizes that this blue horse is “real,” and the two partner up.

Happy! certainly won’t appeal to all audiences, but I suspect those who do enjoy it will love it. You can easily recognize the show’s graphic novel roots by the over-the-top sex, violence, language, blood, and gore. For those not easily offended by these kinds of things, Happy! is a really fun show. Christopher Meloni is great with the deadpan humor, and the series has an interesting underlying story and some unique characters, along with lots of action and humor. Happy’s ever-cheerful attitude and aversion to bad language is a stark contrast to Sax’s foul mouth and gruff, violent, nothing-to-lose demeanor, so the two play well off one another. Tonight’s premiere is worth checking out, with the caveats mentioned above.

On tonight’s premiere, “Saint Nick,” a hit-man is forced to partner with an imaginary blue-winged horse to rescue a missing child.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 11/22/17

Megan’s Choice

When I found out that Bones was ending last season, I was distraught because I wouldn’t be getting my weekly David Boreanaz fix, but thankfully he is now starring in SEAL Team, and he is sexier than ever. His character is, as always, a brooding leading man with secrets, but now he’s in the Special Forces for Navy SEALs and his job is to travel around the world saving people. The cast as a whole really work well together, and I’m very interested to watch the development of the show going forward.

Last week, the team had to rescue an undercover CIA operative in Brazil after she was kidnapped by radical terrorists. They didn’t know she was CIA, so they only asked for a “small” amount of money, but the team knew she’d break under interrogation. She did, and by the time the team got to Brazil, the kidnappers had killed her two Brazilian companions and then left and taken her to Paraguay. They were told to let the Paraguay military rescue her, but when that failed, Jason came up with a plan that fortunately worked and they rescued her safely. Back at home, Jason and Alana spent some time together, and he finally told her about Nate’s burner phone, which led to him telling her about a couple of missions, including the one he just got home from. Maybe they can begin to heal as a couple finally, now that he’s opening up some and not keeping it bottled up.

The were two other story lines worth noting. Ray and his wife, who’d been keeping from him the fact that they were having some major financial problems. She didn’t want to worry him, claiming they were minor, but when he got home from the mission, he realized how bad it really was when he saw her slumped tiredly among a huge pile of paperwork, many of the bills on pink paper. The second was Clay. He was going through SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) training, the advanced version of the interrogation training. It was brutal, but by thinking of his time as a kid with his father and then of him and Brian at the beach, he got through it, finally being “rescued” by Jason and the team, which meant he’s completed his Tier One Operative training. Jason even stood there in front of him and shook his hand, showing the respect Clay had finally earned.

On tonight’s episode, “The Exchange,” Jason and the SEAL team have mixed feelings when they are tasked with bringing home an American soldier who was captured after deserting, in exchange for detainees in Gitmo.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 11/8/17

Jenny’s Choice

Last week was a repeat of SEAL Team because the network didn’t want to compete against the final game of the World Series, so it’s been a couple of weeks since the latest dramatic episode. The B story on that episode was kind of heartbreaking. Stella invited Clay to a party, and he took Brian with him. After the party, Clay and Stella spent the night together, and Brian, who’d worn a gaudy “cowboy” shirt to the party, got lucky with another young woman. The next morning, they were called in early to practice parachute jumping. Clay and Brian were in different jump groups. Clay and his group watched in horror from the ground as Brian’s group did their jump and one jumper had problems with their chute. The backup chute never deployed, and that jumper slammed into the ground full-speed. As Clay watched, every jumper pulled off their helmet…and he realized the one who’d fallen to his death had been Brian. We’d learned a few episodes ago that he & Brian had been friends for a good while, so Clay’s easy-to-see heartbreak was not a surprise. Hopefully this will be the impetus he needs to shape up and really make him do well during the rest of the training/testing.

As for the A story… Jason and the team were sent to an American Embassy in the South Sudan when the ambassador refused to evacuate as the country became increasingly unstable. Sure, he could have refused because he believed absolutely that staying was the right thing to do, but the only reason this guy refused to leave was all due to politics. Leaving would be a “failure” on his part and that wouldn’t be good when it came time for him to be permanently appointed (or whatever). The guy was a complete asshat, but the team finally convinced him to leave for the safety of the rest of the Americans in the small country. It was touch and go getting everyone out of the embassy safely, but with a little trickery, they were able to do it.

I’m enjoying this show more and more every episode, especially when they don’t use any fancy camera work to show us the night vision, etc, like they did the first ep. It still isn’t better than The Brave in terms of characters, but I’m enjoying it! I can’t wait to see how Brian’s death affects Clay going forward and if that shared loss of a friend/teammate gives him and Jason something more in common.

On tonight’s episode, “The Spinning Wheel,” the SEAL Team must work with Jason’s longtime rival, Beau Fuller (Sharif Atkins, White Collar, ER), and his team to plan and perfect a raid under the watchful eye of top military brass. Also, Clay delivers solemn news to a teammate’s next of kin.
