Olivier Rabourdin as RomanTonight, Sundance Channel kicks off the six-part crime series The Last Panthers, which is inspired by the real-life events of the notorious Balkans jewel thieves. The series is set in modern-day Europe, where a group of thieves pulls off a daring diamond heist that bears all the hallmarks of the Pink Panthers, a group that was thought to no longer exist. In the course of the robbery and investigation, a tragedy occurs, which causes the worlds of several folks to unexpectedly collide. The series explores the interplay between the thieves, traffickers, government officials, war criminals, and bankers who are all affected by this heist. Among these folks are insurance adjuster Naomi Franckom (Samantha Morton, Minority Report), who’s haunted by her past service for the UN; Naomi’s boss Tom Kendle (John Hurt, Doctor Who), who specializes in diamond recovery; thief Milan Celik (Goran Bogdan), who’s trying to get money for his brother’s heart surgery; and French police officer Khalil Rachedi (Tahar Rahim), a man whose troubled past resurfaces.

The series is based on an idea by French journalist Jérôme Pierrat, was co-created and written by Jack Thorne (Skins), and directed by Johan Renck (Breaking Bad). I always love a good heist story, I like the pedigree of the folks behind the show, and from the trailer this series looks really interesting! I’m looking forward to checking out tonight’s premiere, and since it’s only 6 episodes, it’s not a huge time commitment for my already-full DVR!

On tonight’s premiere, “The Animal,” a heist in Marseilles bears the earmarks of a notorious gang thought to be out of the business.

Check out how the thieves pull off the diamond heist tonight on Sundance Channel at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Survivor, Criminal Minds, The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, black-ish, Empire, and The Americans.

deutschand8371smallSundance’s new 1980s German spy drama, Deutschland 83 has been the perfect show to fill the void while The Americans is on hiatus. The series follows 24-year-old Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), an East German native who agrees to go to the West as an undercover spy for the Stasi Foreign Service in exchange for his sick mother getting a much-needed kidney transplant.

Last week, Martin met his partner/handler Nina, who told him to bug the NATO specialist’s hotel room. However, just as Martin completed this task, Mayer decided to swap rooms, forcing Martin to do it all over again. Meanwhile, Martin had to carefully avoid running into an old acquaintance of the man whose identity he has assumed. Nina had given Martin a second task, to break into a hotel safe and steal secret NATO military plans. Martin was able to get the floppy disk, but when returned to his room, a scantily-clad woman was waiting for him. She pulled a sharp stick from her hair and charged after him. He was able to fend her off, pushing her over the balcony, but she managed to stumble away. Martin decided to use the incident to his advantage, setting her up to take the fall for the stolen report.

Is it only a matter of time before Martin is discovered? So far he’s been pretty messy — first getting discovered on the phone with his East German girlfriend (will anyone believe Renate’s story?!), and now this. What will he be tasked with next, and what else will go wrong? And what will Martin do when he learns that his girlfriend is actually cheating on him and that his mother isn’t getting the treatment she was promised?

So far, I’m really enjoying the series. I like the blend of the tense spy mission-of-the-week action with the interesting drama that looks at the culture clash between East and West Germany, capitalism vs communism. I highly recommend checking this show out. You can catch up online at http://www.sundance.tv/watch-now/deutschland-83. However, one warning: the show’s dialogue is 99.9% German, so that means a lot of subtitles.

On tonight’s episode, “Atlantic Lion,” in Brussels, Martin is assigned to seduce a NATO chief’s secretary and plant a bug in their office, and later, Martin’s aunt informs him that his mother needs a kidney transplant. Back in East Berlin, Martin’s fiancée begins taking care of Ingrid and reveals a secret she’s been keeping.

See if Martin can pull off his new assignment tonight on Sundance at 11/10c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Extant, Celebrity Wife Swap, MasterChef, Melissa & Joey, Baby Daddy, Flipping Out, Suits, and Mr. Robot.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/18/14

Yesterday was a very long day for me, so I’m extra glad today is Friday. I need the weekend. There’s some good stuff on, so check our Kyle’s and my recommendations. 🙂

lastmanstanding418smallLast Man Standing has been a lot of fun this season. I like that Ryan hasn’t been nearly as annoying recently. I also like that Mandy has an actual direction she is heading now in terms of her future. Some of my favorite scenes, though, are with Mike and his almost-clone, Eve. She can really throw out some good one-liners and snappy comebacks exactly like a snarky teenage girl.

On tonight’s episode, “April Come She Will,” when Vanessa’s mooching sister April comes to visit, Mike suspects it’s because she needs money. Sure enough, April explains that she’s decided to have a baby but doesn’t have the funds for a donor egg. While Vanessa and Mike aren’t on board, Mandy comes up with a solution. Meanwhile at Outdoor Man, Mike tries pulling a prank on Chuck Larabee that gives him some new perspective. Jonathan Adams & Christine Moore guest star.

Find out what solution Mandy comes up with tonight on ABC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing at Unforgettable, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, & Diners, Drive-ins & Dives.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/27/14

What a difference a week makes! I already miss the Olympics, and I didn’t even watch a minute of the events or ceremonies. But I loved the way it soothed my over-taxed TiVo! While it’s great to get a lot of new things to watch, it’s also a bit overwhelming—it looks like my weekends are once again going to be dedicated to catching up on the prior 6 days of DVR backlog!

theredroad227smallTonight, Sundance TV kicks off the all-new original drama, The Red Road. When a college student disappears in the New Jersey Mountains, home of the Lenape Mountain Native American tribe, it doesn’t help the already-tense race relations in the area. In charge of the investigation is Sheriff Harold Jensen (Martin Henderson). His wife Jean (Julianne Nicholson, Boardwalk Empire), a recovering alcoholic, is over-protective of the couple’s two girls and doesn’t like the idea of her daughter dating a Native American. Meanwhile, Lenape Tribe member and ex-con Phillip Kopus (Jason Momoa, Game of Thrones) mysteriously returns to town to visit his father Jack (Tom Sizemore), a longtime drug dealer and criminal.

Sundance seems to be firing on all cylinders lately when it comes to these original/imported dramas, so I’m really interested to check out this new series. It’s got a great cast and an interesting premise. Plus, it’s also only 6 episodes, so it’s not a huge time commitment in this increasingly busy TV landscape!

On tonight’s episode, “Arise My Love, Shake Off This Dream,” police officer Harold Jenson tries to balance his increasingly stressful work duties while his home life slips into disarray; a shocking tragedy upends the lives of all involved.

See how the student’s disappearance affects all those involved tonight on Sundance at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, Parks and Recreation, Hollywood Game Night, Parenthood, Chopped Canada, King of the Nerds, Vikings, and Portlandia.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 12/12/13

Christmas is less than two weeks away, and many shows are airing their fall finales tonight! While I have these visions of me finally catching up on my ever-growing TiVo backlog over the holidays, I somehow doubt that will ever happen. As you count down the shopping days until Christmas, let us count up some shows we suggest you check out tonight…

thereturned1212smallTonight, we are down to the penultimate episode of The Returned’s first season. Last week, Pierre told the other crash victims’ parents about Camille, and they had loads of questions for her about their own children and why they hadn’t reappeared. Simon had been brought to the morgue after Thomas shot him as an “intruder,” but Simon soon found himself reawakening once again—in a morgue drawer. Thomas was afraid this might happen after he heard the news about Camille. Meanwhile, Victor had a scar growing on his arm like the one on Lena’s back. And at the end of the episode, we saw Lucy walk out of her hospital room to meet up with Simon, who was wandering up from the morgue—these returned folks seem destined to find one another!

What do these scars mean? Why are these people back, and can they even die?! What is the big secret about the dam? I have so many questions, but this show is so good that I don’t care if they answer them all right away because I’m enjoying the ride, and I know there’s already a second season on the way. If you’re not watching this show, you should be—Sundance has been airing the new episodes every Thursday, but also a marathon of all of the previously aired episodes every Sunday, so there are lots of opportunities to catch up!

On tonight’s episode, “Adèle,” various clans begin to emerge in the town’s ever-more-chaotic environment.

See if your curiosity is piqued tonight on Sundance Channel at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Elementary, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show, and Parenthood.
