Kyle’s Choice

Each season, the FXX series Archer re-invents itself. Last year, the series became a noir detective mystery, with the characters taking on different roles in the dreamworld inside Archer’s head. This season is called Archer: Danger Island, and once again the characters aren’t quite themselves. The season is set in 1939, on the island of Mitimotu in the South Pacific, where Archer’s mother owns a hotel. Malory pays off local French police Capitaine Reynaud to look the other way when it comes to the illegal businesses she runs out of the hotel. Staying at the hotel is heiress Charlotte Vandertunt, whose life has started to fall apart after she cheated on her husband with Archer, during her honeymoon.

Archer is a one-eyed, eye patch wearing pilot for Sterling Airlines, a small business that flies folks around the island. His co-pilot is Pam, who can also serve double duty as a tough jungle guide. Princess Lanaluakalani charters a flight, but Archer suspects she might be hiding some sort of secret agenda. She is joined by a foreign “businessman,” Siegbert Fuchs, who is obviously some sort of German spy. Oh, and there’s also a talking macaw named Crackers.

I’ve checked out the first two episodes of this new season, and I still find this show to be so much fun. It’s wonderful how the writers find new ways to make each new season feel like a fresh, new, self-contained story. While the characters are different, they still have a lot of the same personality traits we’ve come to love. Archer still drinks a lot, loves female companionship, hates his mother, and makes lots of sarcastic remarks. It looks like Danger Island is going to be another great season, with lots of crazy pitfalls, dangers, and precarious situations to befall the characters.

On tonight’s season premiere, “Strange Pilot,” Archer inserts himself into a domestic dispute; engine troubles threaten to ruin Archer’s business.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/18/18

Jenny’s Choice #1

Oh, poor Garcia on Criminal Minds. It was so sad last week but so much fun learning more about her past. We knew her parents had been killed when she was younger, but to learn that they’d been out searching for her when she was out past curfew made my heart hurt at how much that had affected her. In the end, after spending time with her stepbrother Carlos and meeting with both the man who was up for parole (who was a boy when he drove drunk and killed her parents) and his sister, Garcia dug deep and realized she needed to forgive, rather than continue to hold on to her anger and bitterness, which is what she told the parole board. Unfortunately, that came as a shock to Carlos, who said he couldn’t even look at her afterward, when she told him why their parents had been out that night. My one complaint about that story line was that she was 18, so why her parents were so freaked out about her being out a little past curfew, I don’t know. If she were 15 or 16, maybe. But 18? I don’t know…

As for the case of the week, when the CDC suspected bioterrorism was behind a string of suspicious deaths, they called in the BAU. Turned out to be one man, and it wasn’t so much bioterrorism as we think of it as it was revenge. His parents’ restaurant was forced to close, so when his father died (his mother had passed away not long after the restaurant’s closure), he flipped and started getting back at everyone he thought played any sort of part in it. It was an okay case, but the focus for me was obviously Garcia. LOL

Tonight is the two-episode season finale. It’s been teased that not everyone will make it out alive. So who is it? I don’t want any of them to go, but there are some more than others that would make me angry if we lost them. Guess I’ll have to wait till tonight to (hopefully) find out, because I’ve also read that it’s a cliffhanger ending. Ahhhhh!

On tonight’s first episode, “Mixed Signals,” the BAU is called to Taos, N.M. to investigate an UnSub who is targeting his victims’ temporal lobes.

Then on the season finale, “Believer,” when Reid discovers former FBI Special Agent Owen Quinn (James Urbaniak) locked inside a storage unit, the BAU questions the credibility of Quinn’s bizarre accounts of searching for an UnSub that he named “The Strangler.”

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/11/18

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Syfy’s outer space drama, The Expanse, returns for its third season. Last season, the crew of the Rocinante learned that the protomolecule had taken over Eros station and was heading directly for Earth. Miller sacrificed himself, causing the asteroid to crash into Venus. While this was happening, there was a mutiny on Tycho station, and the Belters managed to steal some of Earth’s nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, on Ganymede, the largest moon on Jupiter and home to the bio-domes that produced food for both Earth and Mars, Martian Bobbie discovered that her whole crew had been killed during a secret test of a new Martian weapon…a weaponized version of the protomolecule created by a scientist hired by Jules Mao. He was experimenting on children with a rare disease, using the protomolecule to mutate them into monsters. Bobbie sought asylum on Earth after learning that the Martians were trying to use her to cover up their weapons test. However, Avasarala was herself in danger after her own people turned on her.

Meanwhile, Holden and the gang teamed up with Prax to help him find his daughter Mei, one of the children being used for the experiments. Before they could find her, the Rocinante was attacked by one of the proto-mosters. They managed to lure it out of the ship and fry it in space using the ship’s blasters. Afterwards, Naomi admitted to Holden that, instead of burning up their sample of the protomolecule in the sun, she had given it to Fred Johnson — since the Earth and Mars both already had samples of the protomolecule, she figured the Belters should have it as well. As the season ended, Earth was investigating the crash on Venus when the protomolecule separated The Arboghast piece by piece, like a set of LEGOs.

What is this protomolecule, what can it do, and what does it want? How will Holden and the others react to Naomi’s news? Can Bobbie and Avasarala escape, and if they do, where can/will they go? There’s a war brewing between Earth, Mars, and the Belt, and all three sides are armed with weapons and the protomolecule. Can any side truly come out victorious from this situation? Tonight’s action-packed premiere picks up immediately where the second season left off. It’s a fun, exciting ride, and I look forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out and what lies ahead for the characters.

On tonight’s season premiere, “Fight or Flight,” the Rocinante crew deals with the fallout over Naomi’s betrayal while caught in the middle of the war between Earth and Mars; Avasarala and Bobbie hatch an escape plan.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/21/18

Jenny’s Choice #1

Oh snap! Last week’s Chicago PD might have been the most perfectly titled episode to date: “Breaking Point.” The case itself was okay – a prominent alderman was killed, and of course the team solved the case. But the bigger story in my opinion was when Woods came after Olinsky. Apparently a hair of Olinsky’s was found on the dead body of Voight’s son’s killer, and a witness saw a woman in the area as well. Woods, of course, is trying to get to Voight through Olinsky, and it seems like Olinsky is going to hold steady…but when he went to Voight with the news about the witness being credible and said they should talk to Erin to get their stories straight, he may have run into Voight’s “breaking point” in terms of his loyalty to Olinsky: Erin. He said no, they didn’t want to do that yet, or something to that effect. And right then is when Olinsky realized that if it came down to Erin or him for Voight’s loyalty, he would not come out on top. Voight better do something quick if he wants to keep Woods from hearing the whole story from Olinsky!

I’m so excited about tonight’s episode. We get to learn more about Upton’s past, AND Bosch…I mean Titus Weller is guest starring! I love him, and it makes the time until the new season of Bosch starts next month!

On tonight’s episode, “Ghosts,” Upton brings back an old undercover identity to help take down a meth ring spearheaded by a former criminal contact. And with pressure from Woods mounting, Voight calls in a favor for Olinsky.

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, the third season of The Magicians kicks off on Syfy. As the second season came to a close, Penny learned that he had “cancer plus” and was dying and only had three weeks to live. Meanwhile, in Fillory, Eliot and Margo started to execute their plan to take back their kingdom. However, in exchange for helping her re-enter Fillory, the Queen of Fairies took Margo’s right eye. Eliot and Margo threw a party to lure brother gods Umber and Ember into their trap. After Ember killed his own brother, Quentin, with Julia’s help, used a sword to kill Ember. They believed they had saved magic, but when Alice heard the news, she was concerned that Ember and Umber’s parents, the creators of the universe, would send something to avenge the death of their children. Sure enough, the literal plumber of the gods cut off the supply of magic to Brakebills, the library, and Fillory.

In Fillory, the fairies used this lack of magic as their opportunity to forcibly seize and occupy the castle. At Brakebills, Dean Fogg resorted to teaching his students magical theory, in hopes that magic might still return. Meanwhile, Julia sneaked onto campus and showed Quentin that she could still create a small spark, which gave him hope. Finally, Joseph the monk appeared to Alice, warning her that The Lamprey was coming after her.

Will the group find a way to restore magic to Brakebills, Fillory, and the rest of the world? Can Julia’s spark of magical ability be harnessed into more? How long can Penny survive by staying in the library, immune from the passage of time? And will magic return in time to find a cure for his cancer? What is after Alice, what does it want, and can it be stopped? And how are Eliot and Margo going to take back Fillory from the Queen of Faries? I’ve already checked out tonight’s wonderful season premiere. I had forgotten how much I had missed this show’s great mix of humor, sarcasm, action, and drama. There is an especially fun scene between Eliot and Margo that made the TV fan in me so giddy. The premiere sets up several interesting quests for the characters that are sure to intersect over the next few weeks. It looks like we are in store for another thoroughly entertaining and magical season!
