It’s time for another big #OneChicago crossover event, and I couldn’t be more excited. There’s no need to do much of a recap, since I doubt any of the continuing story lines for each show will follow up this week, but there were some highlights. On Chicago Med, by the end of the episode, Maggie had given up the pretense of being okay. Looks like she’s going to move her treatments there to Med instead of across town, and she’s going to train April to do her job. She still isn’t telling anyone, but it’s a step in the right direction. Speaking of April… She & Dr. Marcel kind of got into it about a patient, but April found out at the end that Marcel hadn’t exactly done what she’d thought, so now she’s okay working with him – I hope he doesn’t come between her & Ethan, not when they’re in such a good place finally. And finally, Will & Natalie…& unfortunately Phillip. Natalie makes a mistake about a patient, and the parents ask for a new doctor for their son. Will takes over and tells her he’ll be overseeing all her cases until he’s sure she’s back to 100%. She thinks he’s punishing her for Phillip, and he kinda is. Not punishing, really, just not trusting either of them – Phillip because he’s a psychopath and Natalie because she’s suffering from the TBI and crazypants Phillips.

On Chicago Fire, the biggest story line was Brett and Foster treating a boy at a juvenile detention center who they believed to have been set up by a guard. And they were right. In the process of that, they met a cute young social worker, and he & Brett hit it off. The other big story lines were: 1) Mouch & Trudy going in together to buy in to Molly’s with Hermann. It was pretty heartwarming; 2) Boden chose Kidd to represent the district at a leadership conference, which shocked the heck out of her. She’ll kick ass, though, as she always does; And 3) Casey kind of hit it off with one of the reps who installed some new tech at the firehouse, but she was pretty wackadoodle. LOL

Finally, on Chicago PD, a botched carjacking turned out to be much more, involving a female drug kingpin who only worked with young women. Unfortunately for those young women, when one of them displeased her, she killed them (or had them killed). Newbie Vanessa Rojas struggled to fit in with Intelligence but eventually helped take the woman down.

And that brings us to this week. Crossovers can be hit or miss, but I think this one’s going to be a hit. From everything I’ve read, it seems like it’s truly going to be a crossover, with many characters from each show appearing in all the episodes, not just one or two in one of the other episodes. And they’re switch things up so that Chicago Fire is up first, followed by Med and then PD to bring up the rear as always.

On tonight’s episode of Chicago Fire, “Infection Part I,” a rare but deadly bacteria takes its toll on numerous victims around the city, leaving Chicago’s finest first responders to work together alongside the CDC to resolve the dangerous situation. Following a fire at a local university that ties into the outbreak, Severide has suspicions that something bigger is happening.

Then on tonight’s episode of Chicago Med, “Infection Part II,” an entire apartment complex is forced into quarantine when cases of the deadly virus turns into an epidemic. P.D. chases a lead that could point to a case of bioterrorism and Will gets dangerously close to the suspect.

And finally on tonight’s episode of Chicago PD, “Infection Part III,” a fter zeroing in on the suspect responsible for the bioterrorism that’s gripping Chicago, the PD prepares to undertake their biggest manhunt yet. Upton is torn between helping track down the perp and providing emotional support to the scared young girl that needs her. Voight fears his team is being sent on a wild goose chase.

Don’t miss the exciting “zombie apocalypse” crossover event tonight on NBC starting at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching Limetown, The Goldbergs, Schooled, Guy’s Grocery Games, Modern Family, Nancy Drew, SEAL Team, Single Parents, S.W.A.T., & Stumptown.

Today, YouTube Premium released the 10-episode second season of the highly-entertaining Cobra Kai, a follow-up series to The Karate Kid, taking place 34 years after the original film and finding former enemies Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) rekindling their old rivalry. Johnny blames all of his life’s misfortunes on Daniel and the way things played out at the All Valley karate tournament three decades earlier. So as a way to find redemption, he decides to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, taking in other social outcasts, toughening them up, and teaching them the No Mercy motto of the Cobra Kai. His top student is Miguel Diaz, who happens to be Daniel’s daughter Samantha’s boyfriend. Meanwhile, Daniel has become a successful businessman, turning his All Valley fame into a way to sell cars. As a way to find balance in his life, Daniel decides to mentor a karate student Robby Keene – who, unbeknownst to him, is Johnny’s estranged son – teaching him the much more peaceful methods he learned from his own mentor, Mr. Miyagi. After several personal clashes throughout the season, things came to a head at the 50th Anniversary All Valley Under-18 Karate Championship, where once again the Cobra Kai utilized unethical methods, with Miguel exploiting Robby’s injured shoulder in order to win the match. As the season ended, Johnny found a shadowy figure waiting for him back at the dojo – his former mentor John Kreese (Martin Kove), who was thought to have been dead.

The second season picks up right where that jaw-dropping moment left off. Where has Kreese been all these years, and why has he returned now? What are his plans for the Cobra Kai dojo he created, and is he going to sit idly by and let Johnny run things? Meanwhile, Daniel decides to open his own dojo in order to fight back against Cobra Kai. However, he’s having trouble finding new students for his less flashy form of Miyagi-do karate, leaving him just two students – Robby and his daughter Samantha (though that’s one more than he had last season!).

The second season is one about love, forgiveness, redemption, and good versus evil. The series does an excellent job of making you question who is the real bully in this story – Johnny or Daniel. Johnny is in a constant struggle to better his life and do the right thing, but nothing ever seems to go as planned, and when he tries to do the right thing and things go wrong, he never gets credit for it. So why does he even bother? Why not just be the villain everyone seems to think he is?! Meanwhile, Daniel may seem like the nice guy, but when Johnny’s around, he turns into a bit of jerk. He’s also letting his obsession with the dojo take over the other aspects of his life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second season – once I started, I binged my way straight the way through all ten episodes. Throughout the series, there is this nice parallel and contrast between the Miyagi-do and Cobra Kai training methods. While the ultimate goals and lessons are the same, the way these two dojos go about their training is vastly different. Over the course of the season, there are some really nice character arcs and growth, both for the adults as well as their students. As with the first season, the writers have done an excellent job of weaving in footage from the original film as a way to provide both backstory and to explain motivations and actions in the present. While the first season focused on the rivalry between Miguel and Robby, this season we get more of Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) and his former (pre-Hawk) nerdy best friend Demetri (Gianni Decenzo). Plus there’s some fun new students and additions to the cast, including Paul Walter Hauser (Kingdom). The second season also sees the return of several characters from the film. It is another great season that culminates in an exciting, action-packed finale that will have you screaming at the TV for a third season.

Check out the entire second season now on YouTube!

I’ll also be watching/recording Whiskey Cavalier, The Amazing Race, What We Do in the Shadows, and Happy!.

Today, YouTube released the new 10-episode futuristic sci-fi thriller Origin, from director Paul W.S. Anderson. The series follows a group of strangers who were on their way to recolonize a planet five light years away, when something happened and they woke up early. Now they find themselves in deep space, with no signs of the ship’s crew and only a small fraction of the passengers who were supposed to be on board. They begin to search the ship and discover strange and creepy things, which only brings up more questions. There is something mysterious and deadly on board, and the passengers start to question if they can really trust one another.

I checked out the first two episodes, and by the end of the premiere I was completely sold. I love this kind of tense thriller, and I can’t wait to learn more about these characters and see the mystery unfold. Things get incredibly freaky by the end of the first episode and continue to amp up even more in the second episode, becoming a consistent stream of jump scares. If I had to describe the show in one sentence, it would be The Thing in space. However, the series does take some breaks from the tension – each episode utilizes flashbacks to explore one of the character’s backstories, looking into who they were and why they ultimately jumped at the chance to erase their past and to start over with a blank slate and a new identity on a new planet.

The cast is great. It includes Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Natalia Tena (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones), Sen Mitsuji, Nora Arnezeder (Mozart in the Jungle, Zoo), Fraser James (Holby City), Philipp Christopher, Nina Wadia, Madalyn Horcher (Gracepoint), Siobahn Cullen, Adelayo Adedayo (Timewasters), and Wil Coban. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I got a chance to participate in the press room for the series. Unfortunately, due to a tight schedule, I only got the chance to speak with one pair of actors – Tom Felton & Sen Mitsuji – before they were whisked off for their panel. You can find my video from the roundtable Q&A at NoReRuns.net.

Check out the complete first season of Origin now on YouTube.

I’ll also be watching/recording Survivor, Riverdale, and Stan Against Evil.
