Kyle’s Choice #1

12monkeys116smallTonight, Syfy kicks off 12 Monkeys, inspired by the cult 1995 film of the same name, about a man from a post-apocalyptic future who travels back in time to our present try to stop the spreading of a deadly plague that will ultimately wipe out almost 94% of the world’s population. The main cast includes Aaron Stanford (Nikita) as James Cole, the man trying to save the planet; Amanda Schull (Suits, One Tree Hill) as virologist Dr. Cassandra Railly who reluctantly aids Cole in his mission; Kirk Acevedo (Fringe, Oz) as Ramse, Cole’s best friend; and Noah Bean (Nikita, Damages) as Aaron Marker, Cassandra’s boyfriend and political insider. The recurring cast also includes Emily Hampshire (Rookie Blue), Barbara Sukowa, Tom Noonan (Manhunter), Zeljko Ivanek (Madam Secretary, Damages), and Todd Stashwick (Warehouse 13, The Originals).

While I wasn’t a huge fan of the original film, I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. While the general premise is the same as the film, the series sets up a larger world, mystery, and conspiracy. It looks like the show is going to be a fun action-adventure thrill ride with lots of time-whimey things to try to wrap your head around. Things are constantly jumping backwards and forwards in time, events are occurring in the past before they are actually known in the present, and so on. So you are constantly piecing together the puzzle of a story and working things out at the same time as the characters are. I can’t wait to see how more of this story unfolds!

Syfy held panels for 12 Monkeys and Helix at the Syfy Digital Press Tour a few months ago. You can find my videos and coverage at NoRerruns.net.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” using a dangerous and untested method of time travel, a man from a decimated future travels to present day on a mission to locate and eliminate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually all but annihilate the human race.

Jump back in time with this new series tonight on Syfy at 9/8c.

Kyle’s Choice #2

helix116smallHelix was one of my favorite shows (new or old) last year. I loved the creepy, claustrophobic setting and the day-per-episode format. At the end of the first season, the arctic research facility had been blown up, and Julia discovered she was immortal and pregnant and then went missing. Almost a year later, Alan managed to track her down in Paris. However, what he didn’t yet realize was that his brother Peter has been working with the evil Ilaria Corporation and that Julia now appeared be on their board of directors!

It looks like this season is going to be just as suspenseful and creepy as the first. Matt Long joins the cast as CDC doctors Peter Farragut and Sarah Jordan investigate a new virus outbreak that is killing folks who recently returned from a mysterious remote island. Also new to the cast is Stephen Weber (Chasing Life, Murder in the First), who plays the head of a cult on the island.

The series once again takes the day-per-episode approach but adds a new twist while exploring what’s going on with Julia. Is she truly evil, or was there another motive for her joining Ilaria? What happened to her baby? Is Peter still working for Ilaria as well? And how does all of this tie into what’s happening on the island? I’m really looking forward to another exciting season!

I had the opportunity to talk with the cast and creator about the new season at San Diego Comic-Con. You can find my videos at NoReruns.net.

In tonight’s episode, “San Jose,” in the second-season premiere, Drs. Peter Farragut and Sarah Jordan are joined by Kyle Sommer when they battle a new deadly virus on a mysterious wooded island.

To see where the characters find themselves now, tune in to Syfy at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Cristela, Grimm, Glee, Banshee, and Newsreaders.
