Tonight is the 2-hour series premiere of Empires of New York on CNBC at 8/7c. Narrated by Paul Giamatti and set amid the grit, greed, and glory of 1980s New York, Empires of New York chronicles the meteoric rise of five icons who not only reshaped the city but contributed mightily to the world we live in today: “arbitrage king” of Wall Street Ivan Boesky; queen of New York real estate Leona Helmsley; audacious U.S. Attorney Rudy Giuliani; powerful organized crime boss John Gotti; and media-savvy business tycoon and future President of the United States Donald Trump. Drawing on exclusive interviews, never-before-told stories, and secret tapes, the six-episode series follows five titans of the era who shared a singular trait: the insatiable need to win at all costs. Seizing opportunity in an era jolted by one cultural upheaval after another — MTV and 24-hour news, hip hop, drugs, the onset of AIDS — they broke rules, flaunted their wealth, and delighted in the destruction of their enemies. And oddly, at times America came to love them for it.

Tonight is the holiday movie A Royal Christmas Engagement on ION at 7/6c. A Manhattan ad agency boss, John Holiday, entrusts Lauren to deliver the big pre-holiday client pitch, but only winds up annoying her when she’s teamed up with a European consultant. To Lauren’s surprise, this consultant turns out to be the handsome Prince Edward of Candashire, masquerading as his consultant pal to escape his royal duties for an incognito American Christmas. It stars James Nitti, John Schneider (The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Smallville), & Paige Bach.

Tonight is also the holiday movie If I Only Had Christmas on Hallmark at 8/7c. At Christmas, a cheerful publicist (Candace Cameron Bure) teams up with a cynical business owner (Warren Christie) and his team to help a charity in need.

Tonight is also the holiday movie Once Upon a Main Street on Lifetime at 8/7c. Amelia Lewis (Vanessa Lachey) is super excited when she buys an available storefront, planning to open a year-round Christmas shop. But her celebration comes to a screeching halt when she discovers that Vic Manning (Ryan McPartlin) has also bid on the property. Amelia and Vic have the same idea, get to the seller — Elder Dubois (Patrick Duffy) in the next town — and convince him to sell his space to them. Despite the holidays, Elder is down in the dumps. It’s the first Christmas without his wife, and he’s in no mood to chair the decoration committee for the “Battle of the Main Street” yearly holiday competition with the neighboring town. Hoping to win favor with Elder, Amelia and Vic volunteer to take over his duties. After continually bickering and trying to one-up each other, the two combatants learn to work together and even get the merchants on Main Street to put aside their differences for the greater good. Everyone, including Amelia and Vic, realize that compromise is the key that leads to a happy — and romantic — ending.

Tonight is a 30-minute special for DJ Cassidy’s Pass the Mic, “BET Soul Train Edition,” on BET at 10/9c. DJ Cassidy has transformed the way we experience music. This show transports us all back in time to a carefree place where we danced hard, sang loud, and smiled big.

While she dives deeper and deeper into these underworlds, Mariana reveals – with characteristic boldness and empathy – that the people operating these trafficking rings are often a lot more like us than we realize. The show offers viewers a mission-driven adventure to places rarely seen, providing an intimate peek behind the criminal curtain. Mariana spends time with major players from a host of underground economies – from tiger traffickers and international scammers to counterfeiters, gunrunners and fentanyl suppliers. Along the way, she also meets with law enforcement, ex-cons, fellow journalists and locals caught in the crossfire, all in an attempt to provide a 360-degree view of these poorly understood trafficking networks that contribute to the world’s multi-trillion-dollar shadow economy.

Overnight was the (US & Canadian) series premiere of The Commons on Sundance Now. Set in a gripping vision of the near future, gifted neuropsychologist Eadie Boulay (Joanne Froggatt, Downton Abbey, Liar) is desperate to conceive a child. Faced with next level climate change, the question of bringing a child into the world is a whole lot more complicated than it used to be. Overnight was the limited series premiere of Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults on HBO Max. The docuseries is a thorough examination of the infamous UFO cult through the eyes of its former members and loved ones. What started in 1975 with the disappearance of 20 people from a small town in Oregon, ended in 1997 with the largest suicide on US soil and changed the face of modern New Age religion forever. This four-part docuseries uses never-before-seen footage and first-person accounts to explore the infamous UFO cult that shocked the nation with their out-of-this-world beliefs.

Overnight was also the complete first season premiere of Stylish with Jenna Lyons on HBO Max. As president of J. Crew, Jenna Lyons became “the woman who dresses America” – a formidable business and style icon. Now, Jenna is experiencing a rebirth, and her reputation is on the line. Like many others in 2020, her lofty plans required some adapting and rethinking. From this emerged her very first beauty line, LoveSeen, a ground-up build of a boutique hotel in the Abaco Islands, and several soon-to-be-revealed creative surprises. In a refreshing mix of elevated documentary and formatted competition, the show follows Jenna as she tackles design projects that will help define her future business. These include renovating her friend’s Brooklyn townhouse, hosting mobile fashion makeovers, designing her new office, and launching LoveSeen – her fresh take on false lashes. Along the way, she’ll test a diverse group of creative associates, all vying for a life-changing spot in Jenna’s growing team. Jenna’s staff, including her Chief-of-Staff, Kyle DeFord, and Stylist, Sarah Clary, join her in this ambitious new venture, delivering a masterclass in taste, design, and fashion with every episode.

Tonight is the series premiere of Baby Chimp Rescue on BBC America at 8/7c. The three-part series narrated by Gillian Burke follows an American couple, Jenny and Jim Desmond, as they teach their 21 rescued baby chimps how to survive on their own. A house full of baby chimps, and a heart full of love. Husband and wife Jenny and Jim Desmond are parents to an unusual and very large family – 21 orphaned baby chimpanzees. But their home in Liberia is rapidly becoming too small for this rambunctious troop of animals. Stretched to their limits, the Desmonds are building a sanctuary in the forest so their unconventional family can live as natural a life as possible. But before they can move out, these orphans need to learn how to live like wild chimps. Welcome to baby chimp school, where lessons are taught by Jim, Jenny, a team of local caregivers and chimp expert Ben Garrod. Star pupils include Max, the cheeky future alpha male who is easily distracted from lessons. Ella, the youngest, is a very fast learner. And Lucy, the cleverest, helps teach the others what to do. The series also highlights the work the Desmonds are doing with the wildlife authorities to rescue endangered chimps and teach the public that chimps are neither pets nor food. With the wild chimp population in free-fall, they’re in a race against time to change the way people see chimpanzees – before they disappear forever.
