Early this morning, Netflix released the entire first season of the British dark comedy, The End of the F***ing World, a British dark comedy/drama that first aired on Channel 4 in the UK this past October and now launches as a Netflix Original series for the rest of the world. The series is based on the award-winning graphic novel by Charles Forsman.

James (Alex Lawther, Black Mirror) is a 17-year-old self-proclaimed psychopath. At the age of 8, he realized he had no sense of humor; at the age of 9, he put his own hand in a deep fryer just to see if he could feel anything; and shortly after that he got a taste for killing small animals. Now he’s eager to try to kill something larger. That’s when he meets Alyssa (Jessica Barden, Penny Dreadful), the new girl at school. She’s a foul-mouthed rebel who can’t stand her mom and stepdad and finds joy in annoying people. James decides to pretend to fall in love with Alyssa in order to get close to her so he can kill her. The two quickly form a bond and embark on a road trip, but things don’t go quite as planned. They soon find themselves involved in a bad situation, and they seem to get themselves deeper in trouble with every day, becoming like a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde. In pursuit of the young couple are cops Eunice (Gemma Whelan, Game of Thrones) and Teri (Wunmi Mosaku, Guerrilla), who have some relationship issues of their own.

It took me a couple episodes before I really got into this series, but once I did, I was hooked and binged all 8 episodes in one sitting. The season plays out like one long 160-minute movie, with each episode picking right up where the previous episode’s big reveal or twist left off. The series has a nice blend of humor and drama, set to an excellent late 1950s/early 1960s soundtrack. The writers do an excellent job of evolving the characters of James and Alyssa over the course of the season. In the first episode, pretty much all of the “dialogue” comes in the form of inner monologues inside James’s and Alyssa’s heads, but as the series progresses and the characters grow, there is less inner-thoughts and more actual talking. The inner-dialogue is then used more to add punches of humor to the story. I really enjoyed this series, and while I don’t know if there will be a second season (I hope there will be), the first season does provide a solid story and emotional arc for the characters.

Binge the whole first season on Netflix now!

I’ll also be watching Child Support, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

My pick tonight is the series premiere of 9-1-1 on FOX. This new procedural stars Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights, Nashville), Peter Krause (The Catch, Six Feet Under), Angela Bassett (American Horror Story, What’s Love Got to Do with It), Kenneth Choi (American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson), Aisha Hinds (Shots Fire, Underground), Oliver Stark (Into the Badlands), & Rockmund Dunbar (Prison Break, The Path), so it’s quite a strong cast.

This isn’t a normal procedural, though. First, it comes from Ryan Murphy (Glee, Scream Queens) and Brad Falchuk (American Horror Story, Glee), so not names you’d normally see when attached to a procedural. Second, most procedurals have a major “A story” that is the meat of the episode. Take Chicago Fire, for example. Whatever big call they have is usually involved in the A story, and they usually only have one big call per episode. But in this case, at least in the pilot, which I’ve seen, there are a handful of calls for the firefighters, paramedics, & cops. Each call gets a smaller, quicker focus, rather than taking one and fleshing it out to fill the episode. It was a rather fun take, in my opinion. Also, we get another view of first responders, in Connie Britton’s 911 operator. That’s a point of view we’re not used to seeing.

I read a review yesterday that wasn’t very positive, but frankly, I quite enjoyed the pilot. I liked the way they handle the quick calls and how much we see (without getting too detailed or involved) into the characters’ personal lives. Hopefully everyone will give it a chance and we see them settling in and getting more comfortable in their roles.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” emergency response providers put their lives at risk to save others, from a possible baby in the walls to a young girl home alone when intruders break in and more.

Don’t miss tonight’s premiere on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Amazing Race, The Goldbergs, The Librarians, Iron Chef Showdown, Law & Order: SVU, Modern Family, Property Brothers, SEAL Team, American Housewife, Chicago PD, Criminal Minds, & Match Game.

Tonight, FOX kicks off the new comedy LA to Vegas, which follows the exploits of the passengers and crew aboard the Jackpot Airlines weekend flights between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Piloting the plane is Captain Dave (Dylan McDermott, American Horror Story, The Practice) – a thrice-divorced guy who’s more in love with himself than anyone else and who puts having fun above everything else. He’ll hit on passengers and joke about getting high in the cockpit. Flight attendants Ronnie (Kim Matula, The Bold and the Beautiful, UnReal) and Bernard (Nathan Lee Graham, Zoolander) aren’t that much better and don’t put a whole lot of effort into doing their jobs properly either. Some of the flight’s regular passengers include Economics professor Colin (Ed Weeks, The Mindy Project), stripper Nichole (Olivia Macklin, The Young Pope, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll), and gambler/con man Artem (Peter Stormare, American Gods, Prison Break).

I thoroughly enjoyed the few episodes I’ve seen of this series – it had me laughing out loud quite a few times. The cast is hilarious and really play really well off one another. The writers have done a great job of coming up with witty dialogue and fun situations and characters. The show’s setting allows for both ongoing developments with the recurring characters, as well as crazy new stories each week with new passengers or temporary crew members who pop in as guest stars. This is one of my favorites of the new midseason shows, and I am really looking forward to seeing more episodes!

Tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” introduces the shoestring budget airline crew and its eccentric passengers who, every weekend, take the roundtrip flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with one goal in mind: to come back a winner. It won’t be easy, but this unlikely group of miscreants and dreamers will eventually go from being strangers on a plane to a supportive, if unconventional, family – well, at least from Friday to Sunday.

Check out the new show tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, Fresh Off the Boat, black-ish, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, and The Mick.

Early this morning, Netflix released the second half of the third season of Fuller House. As the first half of the season came to a close, everyone was heading to Japan for Steve & CJ’s wedding. Stephanie had decided she wanted to have a child but thought it was too early into their relationship to ask Jimmy to be the father, so she started looking for a sperm donor. However, Kimmy accidentally let this slip to Jimmy, who surprised Stephanie on the plane and told her that he did want to be the father. Meanwhile, Matt told Stephanie that he was planning to propose to DJ in Japan. However, DJ, wearing a sleep mask and, thinking she was talking to Kimmy, admitted that she nearly picked Steve over Matt at the homecoming and was afraid of losing her soulmate. However, it turned out that Steve had switched seats with Kimmy, so it was he who heard the shocking confession, and now Steve didn’t know what to do with this information.

I am really looking forward to today’s nine new episodes. I was just a casual fan of the original series but have been really enjoying this revival. Will Steve call off the wedding now that he knows DJ still loves him? Will Matt propose to DJ, and if so, how will she respond? While Matt’s a nice guy, I really want DJ and Steve to end up together, and it seems likely that will happen… I just wish they’d stop toying with the audience and dragging out the inevitable.

Catch the whole season, including the nine new episodes, now on Netflix.

I’ll also be watching/recording Bright and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

There probably aren’t many people who aren’t familiar with the 1983 film A Christmas Story – it has become a Christmas classic. Five years ago, the film was adapted to a Broadway musical, and tonight FOX will present the special 3-hour live event, A Christmas Story Live! The play is set in 1940s Indiana, where an eleven-year-old dreamer Ralphie (Andy Walken) desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. However, his parents (Chris Diamantopoulos & Maya Rudolph) are worried that Ralphie will shoot his eye out and say no. So Ralphie decides to take his request directly to Santa (David Alan Grier). This humorous and nostalgic story is narrated by a grown-up Ralphie (Matthew Broderick), who recounts his misadventures with his friends as they deal with school bullies, Ralphie’s annoying younger brother Randy, and a grumpy but loving father who always finds something to complain about.

I have seen the original film countless numbers of times – TBS airs a 24-hour marathon of the movie each year on Christmas Day. I have a hard time imagining these beloved characters being played by different actors, but I am really looking forward to tonight’s live production. I’m interested to see how this story translates into a musical – I have been a huge fan of these live musicals that the TV networks have been putting on each year! The cast sounds amazing. In addition to those already mentioned above, the production will also star Jane Krakowski as teacher Miss Shields; Ana Gasteyer as Mrs. Schwartz, the mother of one of Ralphie’s friends; Ken Jeong as the restaurant owner; and pop boy band PRETTYMUCH playing carolers.

Don’t miss this fun Christmas experience LIVE tonight on FOX starting at 7/6c.

I’ll also be watching/recording MythBusters and SMILF.
