Tonight, The Mick returns to FOX to kick off its second season. In the first season, reckless black sheep Mickey (Kaitlin Olson) was forced to care for her niece and two nephews when her wealthy sister went on the lam. What resulted was a hilariously inappropriate Uncle Buck-style comedy that quickly became one of my favorite new comedies of last season. The first season of the series ended with a bang, literally. The Pembertons returned, only to get caught by the police, and in a huge cliffhanger, the mansion went up in flames.

I can’t wait to see where the show goes from here. Without the huge mansion, where are Mickey and the kids going to stay? Do they have any money stashed away, and if not, who is going to take it harder — Mickey or the kids?!

On tonight’s premiere, “The Hotel,” Mickey and the kids are forced to downgrade after their financial advisor cuts them off due to excessive spending; Chip learns tricks from Jimmy on how to live in a luxurious hotel.

Catch tonight’s episode on FOX at 9/8c.

I think my favorite pilot that I got to watch over the summer was NBC’s The Brave, which is why it’s my first pick tonight. Avi Nir, an executive producer of Homeland, is also the executive producer of this one, and even though I didn’t watch Homeland, I know that at least the first handful of seasons it was very popular and a lot of people considered it a great show. So I have high hopes for this one as well. Considering it’s a procedural about the “complex world of America’s elite undercover military heroes,” (in NBC’s words), it’s going to be right up my alley. Also, trust me when I say you don’t want to miss a minute of the action…including the very last minute of the episode!

Anne Heche plays D.I.A. Deputy Director Patricia Campbell. She and her team of analysts in Washington, D.C., have at the fingertips the world’s most advanced surveillance technology. Adam Dalton, played by Mike Vogel (Under the Dome) leads a Special Ops squad of highly trained undercover specialists. Their unbreakable bond and commitment to freedom helps them to save the lives of innocent people and execute missions in some of the most dangerous places in the world. It also stars Tate Ellington (Noah Morgenthau), Demetrius Grosse (Ezekiel “Preach” Carter), Natacha Karam (Jasmine “Jaz” Khan), Noah Mills (Joseph “McG” McGuire), Sofia Pernas (Hannah Rivera), and Hadi Tabbal (Amir Al-Raisani).

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” when American doctor Kimberley Wells (guest star Alix Wilton-Regan) gets kidnapped by a group with terrorist ties, Captain Adam Dalton and his squad must take action and stop at nothing to save her. Across the world, D.I.A. Deputy Director Patricia Campbell and her team of analysts guide Dalton along the way through as the group learns that Wells’s disappearance might have ties to something that could be catastrophic.

Don’t miss the exciting premiere tonight on NBC at 10:01/9:01c.

Tonight, FOX kicks off the fourth season of the gritty Batman drama Gotham. As the third season came to a close, there was a bit of a power struggle, with Barbara, Penguin, and even a resurrected Fish Mooney, all looking to gain control of the city. The Tetch virus was running through the city, and whichever one of them located Strange’s antidote first would control Gotham. Jim Gordon had become infected with the virus, so he, too, was after the cure to save himself and Lee. With Harvey’s help, he managed to procure two vials of the antidote, but Lee was less than thrilled to receive the cure — she had been enjoying the sense of power the virus had given her. Meanwhile, Bruce was off on his own journey of self-discovery, being brainwashed by Ra’s al Ghul. And Penguin was a bit distracted by his rivalry with Ed Nygma, which ended with Mr. Freeze putting The Riddler on ice. Penguin placed his frozen rival in his tavern as a centerpiece as he debated the most advantageous way to make use of a thawed Nygma.

The first half of fourth season is subtitled “A Dark Knight.” That means we’ll finally be seeing Bruce don a costume and heading out into the streets of Gotham to dole out vigilante justice. It looks like we’re in for another exciting season with the introduction of some more familiar villains, such as Scarecrow. I’m looking forward to seeing how the season plays out as Bruce finally becomes the masked hero we’ve been waiting for!

On tonight’s fourth season premiere, “Pax Penuina,” Gordon fears Jonathan Crane is still alive and back in Gotham when the Scarecrow’s signature MO is used in a series of robberies. Meanwhile, Penguin’s “licensing” of crime in the city backfires during the grand opening of his new Iceberg Lounge; and, in the aftermath of his encounter with Ra’s Al Ghul, Bruce begins his vigilante watch.

Don’t miss tonight’s premiere on FOX at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Orville, Flipping Out, Nathan for You, and The Guest Book.

Tonight one of my favorite new shows from last season, The Good Place, returns to kick off its second season. Kristen Bell stars as Eleanor Shellstrop, a selfish, self-centered young woman who quickly realized that, due to some kind of error, she was accidentally sent to “the good place” upon her death when she really deserved to go to “the bad place.” Determined to keep this fact a secret from Michael (Ted Danson), the being in charge, she enlisted her assigned soulmate, ethics professor Chidi (William Jackson Harper), to help teach her how to be “good.” However, Eleanor soon discovered that she was not alone and that some others had also accidentally slipped through the cracks — dim-witted Jason (Manny Jacinto) and narcissistic socialite Tahani (Jameela Jamil). The first season ended with an amazing surprise twist that sets up some major changes for the second season.

I thought the first season was sheer perfection. Kristen Bell was forking delightful, and the entire ensemble worked so well together. Each episode would end in some sort of big reveal that always made you anxious to watch the next. So I was a little worried going into tonight’s premiere — how would last season’s finale change this fun, lighthearted comedy? The second season picks up immediately following the events of the finale, and I can happily say the series doesn’t miss a beat. The characters are still the same ones we fell in love with in the first season, and some of the other side characters, such as Real Eleanor, take on a hilarious new role. I checked out screeners for the first four episodes and probably would have binged the entire season in one sitting if it had been available. This show once again had me laughing out loud over and over again — the writers are so witty and constantly come up with fun new twists and turns. I’m so happy this show is back! If you haven’t seen the first season, I highly recommend binging it first, before watching tonight’s season premiere!

On tonight’s one-hour second season premiere, “Everything Is Great!” Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason — who’ve had their memories erased by ambitious master architect Michael — again settle into the Good Place. Eleanor discovers the one clue she left for herself, however, and attempts to piece things together.

Check back in to the Good Place tonight on NBC at 10:01/9:01c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, MasterChef, Worst Cooks in America, Channel Zero, The Sinner, and Mr. Mercedes.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/17/17

Last week FOX launched the new series The Orville. The series is set in the year 2418 and stars Seth MacFarlane (creator of Family Guy) as Ed Mercer, a promising officer whose career derailed after he caught his wife Kelly (Adrianne Palicki, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Friday Night Lights) in bed with a blue alien. It’s been about a year since the divorce, and Mercer finally gets his first and last chance to prove he is worthy of captaining a ship, the Orville. When assembling his crew, Mercer hires best friend Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes, ER, American Dad ) as his helmsman, but Malloy isn’t one to stick to the rule book. The rest of the crew is comprised of folks from an assortment of human and alien species, races, and sexes. For fans of Star Trek, these characters have very familiar archetypes but with a slightly more comedic twist. Worf-like second officer Lt. Commander Bortus (Peter Macon, Shameless, Bosch) is from a species that is all male; Data-like science officer Isaac (Mark Jackson) is from a mechanical species known for being racist toward biological creatures; top physician Dr. Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald, 24, Castle) chose her position because she felt she’d be needed the most with this crew; young security officer Alara Kitan (Halston Sage, Crisis, How To Rock) hails from a planet with higher gravity, so she has increased strength and abilities; and navigator John LaMarr (J. Lee) is chill and just wants to be able to drink his soda while doing his job. The only person on his crew that Mercer didn’t get to choose was his first officer, and he is both shocked and dismayed to learn that his ex-wife Kelly was assigned to the position, which leads to some humorously awkward moments both on the bridge and during excursions.

All of the original FOX promos made this series appear to be a Galaxy Quest-like parody, but instead it turned out to be more of a straightforward show akin to Star Trek Enterprise, with a little added humor. Once I got used to this unexpected tone, I really enjoyed the premiere for the show that we got, but it still felt a little torn as to which identity it wants – a serious homage or a comedy. It feels like it will be more of the former than the latter. The special effects were impressive, the cast is great, and I really liked the dynamics of this crew. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures await the Orville in future episodes.

If you missed last week’s premiere you can download it for free on Vudu or iTunes, and it’s probably also available On Demand or on the FOX app/website.

On tonight’s episode, “Command Performance,” when Ed and Kelly are tricked by a hologram of a ship in distress and find themselves prisoners in a replica of their former home, Alara must step up in her first command of the Orville and attempt a heroic rescue. Meanwhile, Bortus and Klyden receive some happy yet unexpected news.

Check out the second part of the premiere tonight on FOX at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, Fear the Walking Dead, The Great Food Truck Race, The Strain, The Last Ship, The Deuce, Vice Principals, and Episodes.
