In 1984, audiences cheered as Karate Kid underdog Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) executed his iconic crane kick to take home the trophy at the All-Valley Under-18 Karate Championship, stealing the title away from despicable Cobra Kai student Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). YouTube Red’s new series Cobra Kai revisits these characters nearly 35 years later, as their bitter rivalry is reignited. Since he won the karate tournament decades earlier, Daniel LaRusso has made quite a great life for himself. He has a loving wife and two children and owns a successful auto shop/dealership franchise. He gives out bonsai trees to every customer (in honor of his late karate master Mr. Miyagi), and uses lots of karate metaphors in his TV ads and billboards. Meanwhile, life hasn’t been so kind to Johnny – he is a far cry from being the popular kid in high school. He works a crummy job as a handyman for thankless rich people, doing odd jobs such as cleaning dead rats out of their gutters. He still drives an old Pontiac Firebird from the 80s, has a teenage daughter he never sees, lives alone in a messy apartment, and doesn’t even get a second glance from the women he tries to hit on.

Today, YouTube Red has released all 10 episodes of the first season of Cobra Kai. I have checked out the first two, and while the acting isn’t likely to win any Emmys, I did find the series to be a lot of fun and filled with nostalgia. The show has this nice mix of humor and drama, with lots of callbacks to the original movie. I had re-watched the film before checking out the series, but there’s really no need to, as the first couple of episodes include a lot of clips to refresh your memory.

The series twists things up a bit in a fun way, changing the roles of the characters from the movie. This time Daniel is more of the villain, and Johnny takes on the Mr. Miyagi role. Johnny blames Daniel for the state of his life, and every time he sees one of his TV ads or billboards, he grows more and more angry. Daniel has become a bit obnoxious in his success, and Johnny wants to take him down. So when his new neighbor, Miguel (Xolo Maridueña, Parenthood), asks him to teach him self-defense, Johnny decides to start his own school and bring back ways of the Cobra Kai. It is a lot of fun to check back in with these iconic characters decades later, and I look forward to seeing how the first season plays out. Will these two always be at odds? Will Johnny teach his students the same dirty tricks his Sensei insisted on? What kind of revenge does Johnny have planned? And is Daniel truly the villain now, or will things go back to more familiar territory?

I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, Alex, Inc., Modern Family, American Housewife, Designated Survivor, Survivor, The Blacklist, The Americans, Archer, The Expanse, Krypton, and Colony.

Tonight, the first season of FOX’s hilarious comedy, LA to Vegas, comes to an end. In last week’s episode, Captain Dave insisted that he was over his breakup with Patricia. However, while giving one of his in-flight ads for an escape room-slash-wedding chapel, he lost it, going on an anti-love tirade over the loudspeaker to the passengers. In his anger, he broke a warning light on the flight deck, causing the plane to be grounded for repairs. So he headed off to the casino with Artem and Colin, where he found himself on a roll at the craps table. And with all his winnings, Dave decided that he was going to buy an engagement ring for Patricia. Meanwhile, Ronnie talked to Nichole about Bryan asking her to move in with him. Ronnie was afraid to take this next step, so she started to make a pros and cons list. But when Bryan showed up at the gate, Ronnie told him she wanted to move in with him.

Will Captain Dave go through with his proposal to Patricia, and if so, how will she respond? Is Dave really the marrying kind? How will Ronnie’s decision to move to Las Vegas to live with Bryan change her future? And with everyone else seemingly finding love, when will it be Colin’s turn? I’ve really enjoyed the first season of this wacky airline comedy and look forward to seeing how things are left in tonight’s finale. I really hope this show comes back for another season!

On tonight’s episode, “The Proposal,” Ronnie applies for a job at another airline; against Nichole’s wishes, Dave plans to propose to Patricia; Artem encourages Colin to stand up to his ex-wife.

See where the gang leaves off for the season tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, black-ish, Rise, New Girl, The Flash, The 100, and Legion.

Chicago Fire has been bringing us a lot of strong episodes lately that also include a lot of relationship growth for a few couples. Last episode, Kidd decided she needed to move out from Severide’s place so that they can date and not risk rushing things, because she wants it to go well. At first Severide didn’t seem to want to support the idea but in the end, he said he wanted to be wherever she was and supported her choice. I adore these two together and think if they can keep it up, they’ll be another epic television couples for the history books.

On tonight’s episode, “The Strongest Amongst Us,” after saving a girl from a car accident, Chief Boden and Lt. Severide are taken aback when they receive a surprise package. Brett struggles to keep quiet about Cruz reacquainting with his now-married high school sweetheart, and Otis tackles his next challenge. A crisis brings Bria back into Dawson’s life.

To find out what trouble Bria is in now, tune in to NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and S.W.A.T.

Each season, the FXX series Archer re-invents itself. Last year, the series became a noir detective mystery, with the characters taking on different roles in the dreamworld inside Archer’s head. This season is called Archer: Danger Island, and once again the characters aren’t quite themselves. The season is set in 1939, on the island of Mitimotu in the South Pacific, where Archer’s mother owns a hotel. Malory pays off local French police Capitaine Reynaud to look the other way when it comes to the illegal businesses she runs out of the hotel. Staying at the hotel is heiress Charlotte Vandertunt, whose life has started to fall apart after she cheated on her husband with Archer, during her honeymoon.

Archer is a one-eyed, eye patch wearing pilot for Sterling Airlines, a small business that flies folks around the island. His co-pilot is Pam, who can also serve double duty as a tough jungle guide. Princess Lanaluakalani charters a flight, but Archer suspects she might be hiding some sort of secret agenda. She is joined by a foreign “businessman,” Siegbert Fuchs, who is obviously some sort of German spy. Oh, and there’s also a talking macaw named Crackers.

I’ve checked out the first two episodes of this new season, and I still find this show to be so much fun. It’s wonderful how the writers find new ways to make each new season feel like a fresh, new, self-contained story. While the characters are different, they still have a lot of the same personality traits we’ve come to love. Archer still drinks a lot, loves female companionship, hates his mother, and makes lots of sarcastic remarks. It looks like Danger Island is going to be another great season, with lots of crazy pitfalls, dangers, and precarious situations to befall the characters.

On tonight’s season premiere, “Strange Pilot,” Archer inserts himself into a domestic dispute; engine troubles threaten to ruin Archer’s business.

Visit Mitimotu with Archer and the gang tonight on FXX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Handmaid’s Tale, Alex, Inc., Designated Survivor, Survivor, The Blacklist, The Americans, The Expanse, and Krypton.

Tonight, The 100 finally returns for its fifth season on The CW. When we last left off, everyone was trying to escape the deadly radiation that was rapidly approaching. The lucky 1200 people who had been selected for the bunker were locked away, with Octavia inside and in charge. The remaining folks only had 90 minutes to escape and were desperately trying enact their plan to head back up to the Ark ring. However, in their haste to get things done quickly, the communications system went down, which meant that someone was going to have to activate the power on the Ark ring manually. Clarke volunteered, but when she got to the satellite station, the situation was worse than expected. She knew she wouldn’t get back to the ship in time and told the others to launch without her. They reluctantly did this but still weren’t out of the woods. They were rapidly running out of air and needed to dock the ship and get the oxygen scrubber connected to the Ark ring ASAP, which Bellamy managed to do in the nick of time. Meanwhile, Clarke was left on Earth, unprotected from the radiation but with the glimmer of hope that she would be immune.

The finale then cut to 6 years and 7 days later. Clarke is alive and well, living on a small, green plot of land along with a little girl named Madi. Every day Clarke tries to contact Bellamy and the others on the radio but has never made contact with either those on the Ark or those in the bunker. When she hears a loud noise overhead, she assumes it’s the others finally returning. However, she’s shocked and dismayed to discover a giant prison transport ship, with the name Eligius Corporation stamped on the side, landing nearby.

Who is this little girl Clarke is living with, and how did they survive the past 6 years? What is the Eligius Corporation, where did this ship come from, why are they here, and will those aboard pose a threat to Clarke? And when are the folks on the Ark ring and/or in the bunker going to make their way back to land? There are so many questions and so many opportunities for interesting stories. I look forward to seeing what the fifth season brings!

On tonight’s season premiere, “Eden,” Clarke struggles to survive on a desolate, scorched earth. Meanwhile, her friends in space come across a long-awaited beacon of hope.

Catch up with everyone tonight on The CW at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, black-ish, For the People, Rise, LA to Vegas, New Girl, The Flash, Legion, and The Last O.G.
