Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Veep returns to HBO for its sixth season. When we last left off, the state of the presidency was left to a vote by the Senate. Tom James offered Selina the position of vice president should he win the presidency, but she turned this down, saying she would rather be Secretary of State. Selina tried everything to improve public opinion of her, and Jonah even became a Senator so he could vote for her. However, all of this was moot because the vote came down to a tie, and Vice President Doyle made the tie-breaking vote for Laura Montez, because she promised him the job of Secretary of State. And to add insult to injury, moments after Montez was sworn in, she was given credit for freeing Tibet and was said to be in line for the Nobel peace price, which was the legacy that Selina had been working hard to claim for herself.

I’m really curious to see where this season will go now that Selina is no longer in office. What are she and her former staffers up to now? What kind of schemes is Selina plotting to try to establish her legacy? And does she have plans to try to re-run for president?

On tonight’s premiere, “Omaha,” Selina tries to secure her legacy one year after losing the presidency. Meanwhile, Dan tries to fit in at his new job; and Amy’s D.C.-style campaign tactics are a little too rough for her new coworkers.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/14/17

Megan’s Choice

MacGyver has brought us on a fantastic adventure in its rookie season, and I am so glad it has proved so many doubters wrong. I admit I was one of those people who doubted as to whether or not they would be able to master another reboot, but I am so happy they did. The cast is stellar, and they have great chemistry, but what makes this show is the way the writers have embraced it full throttle. It may also help that the cast is incredibly sexy, and I definitely enjoyed the crossover episode with Hawaii Five-0.

Last week’s episode, we watched as MacGyver went undercover as his arch nemesis, Murdoc. It was a little scary watching the usually calm genius let go and walk the edge of the line when it came to fighting and violence. I am hoping that we get some great relationship movement for the characters shortly because it’s time for some romance on this show.

On tonight’s season finale, “Cigar Cutter,” Murdoc uses his former cellmate to infiltrate Phoenix, engineer his release, and kill all the agents.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/13/17

Jenny’s Choice

“In the not-too-distant future, next Sunday A.D., there was a guy named Joel, not too different than you or me…”

Mystery Science Theater 3000 aired from 1988 to 1999, immediately becoming a cult hit. My husband was a HUGE fan. Joel Robinson (played by show creator Joel Hodgson) was shot into space and forced to watch bad movies while a mad scientist and his crony monitored his mind. Joel built some lovable robot sidekicks to help him keep his sanity. What made it seriously unique was just the way the characters watched the movies and the commentary we got to watch/listen to. Really funny stuff.

In 2015, fans of the series donated to a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign to reboot the show for a brand new, 14-episode season. Original creator Joel Hodgson will be joined by comedian Jonah Ray (also known as Jonah Heston) as the new host and Felicia Day (Geek & Sundry) as “Kinga Forrester.”

If you’ve never seen the show before, Netflix has Season One up if you’re interested!

The complete new season comes out on Netflix tonight at 3:01AM/2:01AMc.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/12/17

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Pop TV kicks off two new comedy series starring former celebrities playing exaggerated versions of themselves trying to reinvigorate their careers. First up is the improvised comedy, Hollywood Darlings, which follows real-life friends/former ’90s child stars Jodie Sweetin (Full House, Fuller House), Christine Lakin (Step By Step), and Beverley Mitchell (7th Heaven) as they juggle reviving their careers with being busy wives and moms. Pop TV aired a “preview” episode of the series last week.

Then, the scripted comedy Return of the Mac follows the misadventures of New Kids on the Block member Joey McIntyre and his real-life family – wife Barrett and their three children, Griffin (8), Rhys (6), and Kira (5) – as he struggles to be taken as a serious actor. However, this plan is derailed when he ends up taking a role as a talk-show host for the fledgling Comfy Channel cable network. The series also stars Adam Ray (MadTV revival), Jamie Denbo (Childrens Hospital), Katie Wee, Punam Patel (Kevin from Work), and Jordan Black (Shaded).

This looks like it’s going to be a really fun and somewhat nostalgic hour of TV. Plus, there are sure to be loads of surprise celebrity guests/former co-stars on both of these shows.

On the premiere of Hollywood Darlings, “How Christine Got Her Groove Back,” Beverley and Christine have a day of unconventional relaxation, and Jodie substitute teaches an acting class for kids.

Then, in the premiere of Return of the Mac, “New Kid on the Talk,” Joe pitches a drama at the Comfy Channel, but he’s talked into hosting his own talk show instead.

Enjoy this hour of new TV tonight on Pop TV starting at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Designated Survivor, Survivor, Empire, Archer, Brockmire, The Magicians, The Expanse, Major Crimes, and Nobodies.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/11/17

Jenny’s Choice

It’s been way too long (January 1!) since we last saw Brooklyn Nine-Nine, especially since they ended it on such a huge cliffhanger! Gina was hit by a bus! I’d actually forgotten that until I started watching the screener for this new episode. Then it hit me. (Doh. 😉 ) That was the episode that dealt with the prison break, where Amy and Jake were competing to see who could capture the most – the loser would then move into the winner’s apartment. Even though Jake won, he was very sweet (and honest! LOL) when he conceded that Amy’s place was better and he wanted to move in with her. It was a great moment for them and a fun episode overall…until Gina walked out and was hit by a bus!

Thankfully, the show is back tonight. I really missed it, and I was very happy with the new episode. We get an answer right off as to Gina’s fate (It’s a comedy. She’s a major character. Do you really think she’s going to die?!), and the episode as a whole is just as funny as always, especially because we see not only one character’s ex, but TWO!

On tonight’s episode, “The Audit,” with the crime rate lowered, Brooklyn will be shutting down one of its precincts – permanently. The Nine-Nine is confident they will be evaluated fairly, until the official auditor turns out to be Amy’s ex-boyfriend, Teddy (guest star Kyle Bornheimer). The whole squad then must band together to try to save the precinct. Jama Williamson also guest stars.
