Kyle’s Choice #1

speechless921smallTonight, ABC’s hilarious Wednesday night comedy line-up returns, but with a couple changes. One of these is the addition of the hilarious and heartfelt new comedy Speechless. Maya DiMeo (Minnie Driver, About a Boy) is a mom on a constant mission to find the best education/care possible for eldest son, JJ, who has cerebral palsy, is in a wheelchair, and can’t speak. Being an aggressive advocate to help JJ find his “voice” means constantly uprooting the family every time Maya finds the tiniest flaw in care or imagined non-PC slight or mistreatment to be outraged about. This constant moving is starting to wear down on husband Jimmy (John Ross Bowie, The Big Bang Theory) and other kids, Ray (Mason Cook, Legends) and Dylan (Kyla Kennedy, The Walking Dead), who’d like a bit of stability and to feel like their opinions also matter. As the series opens, the family moves once again – this time into the junkiest house in a neighborhood with a great school that will provide a full-time aide for JJ. However, it isn’t long before Maya starts finding flaws in the situation. The series also stars Cedric Yarbrough (Reno 911!).

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere – it is one of my favorite new comedies of the fall. This series should fit well with the other family comedies in ABC’s stable, as it has the network’s trademark blend of humor and heart. While the series finds a lot of humor in situations surrounding JJ’s disability, it certainly doesn’t make fun of the disabled. It’s great to see an underrepresented demographic represented on TV. The cast is really talented, especially the young actor playing JJ, who himself has a less severe form cerebral palsy. My only concern about the show is how aggressive and annoying Maya gets in the premiere, but I suspect that character will loosen up pretty quickly over the course of the season.

On tonight’s premiere, “P-I-PILOT,” a mom is driven to do what’s best for her family in this sitcom, which begins with the DiMeos moving yet again, enrolling the kids in a new school and searching for the right caregiver to give JJ, her eldest son with special needs, his voice.

Jenny’s Choice

bull920smallMy pick tonight is the series premiere of Bull. Michael Weatherly moves from being Tony DiNozzo on NCIS to playing Dr. Jason Bull in this drama inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw, found of one of the most prolific trial consulting firms of all time. Dr. Bull and his team of experts at TAC (Trial Analysis Corporation) combine psychology, human intuition, and high-tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses, and the accused tick. His team includes: his brother-in-law Benny Colón (Freddy Rodriguez), who plays a defense attorney in mock trials; Marissa Morgan (Geneva Carr), a cutting-edge neurolinguistics expert from the Department of Homeland Security; former NYPD detective Danny James (Jaime Lee Kirchner), the firm’s tough but relatable investigator; haughty millennial hacker Cable McCrory (Annabelle Attanasio), who is responsible for gathering cyber intelligence; and Chunk Palmer (Chris Jackson), a fashion-conscious stylist and former All-American lineman who fine tunes clients’ appearances for trial.

I’ve seen tonight’s premiere, and it’s a great CBS procedural – just enough of the same to know I’ll love the show yet different enough to give it a bit of a new twist. Michael Weatherly is adorable and cocky, and his team is fun, although we don’t get to see a ton from them in the premiere. I can’t wait to see more of this one.

On tonight’s episode, “The Necklace,” when a wealthy young woman is killed and a young man is charged with her murder, his very wealthy, very well-known father hires Dr. Bull to help convince a jury to find the boy not guilty. Frederick Weller guest stars.

Wellllllllcome back to TV Is My Pacifier’s If We Controlled Your Remote… It was good to have a break over the summer, but I do have to say that we’re all glad to be back because it means all new TV! Check out our picks for tonight, and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing to watch!

Kyle’s Choice

thegoodplace919smallThe fall season is now in full swing, and tonight NBC kicks off its new comedy The Good Place with a 1-hour premiere on a special night/time. Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, House of Lies, Veronica Mars) is a recently deceased young woman who discovers she was accidentally sent to “the good place,” when she likely should have been sent to “the bad place.” Eleanor wasn’t the nicest, most giving person during her life on earth, and quickly realizes the man in charge, Michael (Ted Danson, CSI: Cyber, Cheers), has incorrectly attributed someone else’s long list of good deeds to her. At first she decides to just run with it. However, when this mistake starts to threaten the tranquility of “the good place,” Eleanor seeks the assistance of her afterlife-assigned “soul mate” Chidi (William Jackson Harper, The Electric Company), a former ethics professor, to help her become a better person. The series comes from the hilarious Michael Schur (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation, Master of None) and also stars Jameela Jamil (Playing It Straight), Manny Jacinto (The Romeo Section), and D’Arcy Carden (Broad City).

I really enjoyed tonight’s one-hour premiere, which had me laughing out loud several times. The series offers a fresh take on the concepts of heaven and hell and sets up an interesting and delightful world with some fun characters and relationships. The pilot also establishes a larger mystery of how Eleanor ended up there, what if she gets found out, and what kind of effect her not-so-perfect personality will have in this perfect afterlife. I’m looking forward to seeing how the series plays out week-to-week once it moves to its normal time of 8:30/7:30c on Thursdays later this week.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot; Flying,” Eleanor Shellstrop enters the afterlife and begins her process of becoming a better person in the series premiere, which is the first half of a combined episode. Later, Eleanor tries to prove that she’s worthy of Chidi’s help, and a flaw emerges in Michael’s Neighborhood.

Don’t miss out on meeting Eleanor and Michael tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Match Game, The Big Bang Theory, Kevin Can Wait, Gotham, Lucifer, Food Network Star Kids, and Major Crimes.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/26/16

Sorry this is up late. I’m battling some vicious flu or something. Someone just chop my head off and I’ll be good! LOL

Just to let you all know… This is the last regular Remote post until the new fall season starts in…August? September? Whenever. 😉 We might post a few odds and ends when something really good is going to air, but as a regular post, we won’t be back until fall. But keep coming to the site daily! I’ll still be posting the weekly and daily TV schedules, and we have at least one interview coming up soon. Plus, I have three great, fun giveaways I’ll be posting in the next month or two, so don’t miss them!

Jenny’s Choice

bones526smallTonight is a new – and pivotal – episode of Bones. Last week was a fun one, with guest stars from the vocal group Pentatonix playing part of an acapella college group called the Whippersnaps. When one of the Whippersnaps was killed (and his body found eaten by rats in a science lab. Gross!), it was up to Booth, Brennan, and the rest of the team to find out who did it and why. They focused most of their investigation on the other members of the acapella group and the rival group of female singers, the Gingersnaps, but in the end, it was the dead guy’s roommate who’d killed him, albeit accidentally. He’d found out the singer was stealing his meds and shoved him. The guy fell back, and in trying to balance himself, the bookshelf fell on top of him, hitting him just right and killing him. He put his body in the lab with the rats that had been starved and then released them, hoping they’d eat all the evidence.

Aside from the case, there were several other fun stories. Booth was excited to be setting up their upcoming hike on the Appalachian Trail with his son, only Parker confessed to Bones that he’d gotten into the summer creative writing program at Oxford, and he asked her to tell his dad. Booth was understandably upset but realized Parker needed to do what would make him happiest. Also, it turns out Aubrey was in an acapella group when he was younger! Booth found a tape of their performance and played it for Hodgins, Angela, Brennan, and Aubrey. Hysterical! And finally…Hodgins… He’s still not back to his old self, although things are better between him and Angela. But last week, he signed up for an experimental surgery in the hopes that he would walk again. Angela put a stop to that, though, pointing out that a patient had died on that surgeon’s table, and Hodgins needed to value his life as much as he valued the surviving rat, who he’d named Copernicus. He agreed not to do the surgery.

I’ve seen tonight’s episode, and it’s a good one. Some good twists and turns, and some excellent and funny personal story lines. In my opinion, it’s a can’t-miss episode.

On tonight’s episode, “The Secret in the Service,” an intoxicated college student discovers the dead body of a Secret Service agent just before a scheduled presidential visit to the area. Former intern Dr. Colin Fisher leads the investigation while Brennan battles a case of the flu. Meanwhile, Hodgins takes his life into his own hands and turns a corner after a dangerous experiment.

To see what Hodgins does and who killed the Secret Service agent, tune in to FOX at 8/7c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/25/16

waywardpines525smallTonight, FOX is taking viewers back to that creepy town of Wayward Pines, as some new residents are starting to wake up to discover all is not as it seems. As the first season came to a close, David Pilcher decided that Group B had failed his social experiment and that it was time to burn things to the ground and start anew. So he turned off all of the power, allowing the blood-thirsty Abbies to climb over the wall and clean up the “mess.” The aftermath left many dead, including David Pilcher and Ethan Burke – the man who helped open people’s eyes to what was truly going on in the town. Kate Hewson, the woman behind the revolt, managed to survive, along with Pilcher’s henchwomen Nurse Pam and Megan Fisher. It seemed like things might take a turn for the better now that Philcher was out of the picture, but the show then cut to three years later, where Ben Burke, Ethan’s son, awoke from a coma to discover that the first generation of native-born Wayward Pines teenagers had taken over control of the town and were governing it using the same fear and denial tactics that Pilcher had.

The second season picks up shortly afterwards, with Ben and some others trying to lead a rebellion to overthrow this first generation and allow the residents of Wayward Pines to live freely and not in fear – at least not of their fellow people, because there are still the Abbies to worry about. At the same time, Group C is starting to be thawed out and introduced into the population. Tonight we are introduced to one of those new residents, our new protagonist Dr. Theo Yedlin (Jason Patric), who finds himself in a similar confused state as Ethan Burke displayed in the opening moments of the first season.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first season, and I guess a lot of others did as well, because the show is back despite the fact that it was only supposed to be a single season. I’m a little wary of this second season, as the series has a new showrunner and already went through all of the material from the original book trilogy in the first season. However, I’m hoping they can continue to bring the creepiness and surprises in this second season. I just hope the characters I loved from the first season survive long enough to make it through this season, as this is a show that’s not afraid to kill off characters, especially if they are played by well-known actors!

On tonight’s premiere, “Enemy Lines,” Dr. Theo Yedlin awakens from suspended animation and finds himself in the middle of a rebellion in Wayward Pines.
