Phoebe’s Choice

Swamp ThingSwamp Thing continues to deliver quality episodes that make the cancellation sting. Last week we opened with a flashback to Avery Sunderland’s childhood. They juxtaposed his inability to kill a bound gator as a child with his ease at disposing of a corpse as an adult. Next we shifted to a pair of men hunting in the swamp late at night for cypress copses and rare mosses. Instead they found a corpse that was wrapped in vine in the trees that fell on the younger man, Todd, and cuts his arm a bit. The next morning in Delroy’s Roadhouse, local bar, Todd reported for work but had insane hallucinations instead.

He saw a snake encircling his arm and began to stab at it with a knife. This scene was seriously #hardtowatch, but before he died, he also scratched Delroy, his boss.

Abby went deep in the swamp to find Alec, requesting a sample of him to test at her lab. When she was analyzing that, he appeared to be a flora/fauna hybrid. Dr. Woodrue asked to study it also. The next day, Delroy had a violent hallucination which led to police officer Lucilia getting scratched. Which meant she got her own crazy rage fit moment, in which Abby got scratched. But she was smart enough to go out into the swamp, where Alec absorbed the poison from her and put it back in the corpse it came from.

This episode really struck home how well they were ready to take story arcs from the comics and drop them into episodic, easy-to-digest episodes. Not really a simple task, considering the obscure character that is Swamp Thing. What else to say? I love this show. I hope DCU revives it someday.

On tonight’s episode, “Drive All Night,” haunted by the ghost of her childhood friend who reemerges from the swamp, Abby’s forced to confront both her past with the Sunderlands as well as the dark forces at play in Marais. Meanwhile, Sheriff Cable learns some disturbing information about her son, while Jason Woodrue shares a revelation about Swamp Thing with Avery Sunderland.

Jenny’s Choice

I’ve been enjoying this season of The Amazing Race. I liked the Afghanimals at first, but they’ve moved down my favorites list the last few episodes because of their attitudes. And I was glad to see Rachel & Elissa go home finally. But I was sad that Chris and Bret went home a couple of weeks ago and even more sad to see “Team Fun” (Becca and Floyd) go last week, although damn, they should have spent a tiny less time having fun and a tiny bit more taking it seriously if they wanted to stay in it. They made several silly (ie. stupid) mistakes over their last few episodes especially that eventually sent them home.

So now to the final four teams… I liked Nicole and Victor for a long time because they just seem so sweet and nice, but her whining in the “little girl” voice last week about drove me crazy. If they win, I won’t be angry, but they aren’t my top pick right now. For that, it’s pretty much tied between Tyler and Korey & Colin and Christie. Tyler and Korey have been running a pretty damn clean race, both in terms of mistakes and in stirring up drama, and they’ve been a force to be reckoned with throughout, and they’ve just been nice guys while still being themselves and funny/fun to watch. As for Colin and Christie, I never would’ve guessed going into this season, but they’ve been some of my favorites to watch. He was a total jerk in their previous season. He was rude, yelled a LOT at Christie, and just wasn’t pleasant to watch. They’ve become a bit too…”New Agey” for me – talking about their meditation and what not, but even I have to admit that whatever they’ve been doing has been working. He’s like a totally different person this season – to Christie, to the camera, to the other contestants, cab drivers, etc etc. We saw hints of anger emerge when they had to deal with yet another cow this season (that was a big trigger for his anger last time! LOL), but he calmed much quicker and didn’t get nearly as angry. So they’ve worked really well together this season and have been fun to watch as they advance. So if either they or Tyler and Korey win, I’ll be very happy. Overall, it’s been a fun season, and I’m anxious to see who pulls it out in the end tonight.

On tonight’s two-hour finale, “This One is For One Million Dollars,” with the $1 million on the line, the final four teams race through London, where they take a helicopter ride to Dover Castle, and through Detroit, where they rappel nearly 500 feet down the Guardian Building. The team to cross the finish line first will be crowned the winners.

To see who wins the cash and gets the title of Sole…I mean winners of The Amazing Race, tune in to CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing MasterChef, Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, Guy’s Grocery Games, The Butcher, & Match Game.

Chopped Junior logoI love watching the “kid” version of cooking competition shows because the kids are always so damn talented. And Chopped Junior is no different. It’s crazy because they really don’t make it any easier for the kids than they do for the adults in terms of ingredients and challenges (like must fry or no oven, etc). So I got excited when I learned we were getting six episodes starting tonight, with the recurring Chopped judges joined by special guest stars such as Anthony Anderson, Nikki Bella, Kardea Brown, Clinton Kelly, and Bailee Madison.

On tonight’s episode, “Smoothie Operators,” four young cooking dynamos try to impress the judges, including guest judge Jessica Alba, with appetizers that include beef tongue; a sweet orange cream smoothie in the entree basket; and a giant lollipop and an odd sandwich in the dessert round.

Meet the first group of young chefs tonight on Food Network at 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/24/19

Legion 6-24I am almost amazed that Legion is back for its season-three premiere tonight. In the first place, though he is Professor X’s son, Legion’s stories in the comic books were always tangent to the X-Men. He had almost zero standalone value for Marvel Comics before this show started. Secondly is the fact that season two was slightly more confusing than season one, while still somehow being longer and less entertaining. Also, who even does an eleven-episode season? Legion, that’s who. The musical numbers in season two were not as consistent and important to the heart of the show as they were the first year. Lastly it was kind of a weak play to utilize the Shadow King as the “Big Bad” two seasons in a row, especially considering he was so much scarier in season one.

But that brings us to last year’s finale and the truth at the core of David Haller’s personalities. He is a schizophrenic with multiple personality disorder, and he often has played the role of demented all-powerful madman in the X-Men comics. So in a weird switch up that was foreshadowed by Future Syd, a version of her that has come back to surprisingly help Farouk, we saw that David was always season two’s secret Big Bad.

The episode started with a psychic battle set to what may have been the coolest musical number all year: a duet of The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes” sung by David and the Shadow King as cartoon animations display their mental combat. Farouk almost won, but Lenny sniped a tuning fork that was strangely in the landscape, and that allowed Legion to get the upper hand. Future Syd confronted David then and shot a gun at him, but Lenny again saved the day by shooting that bullet out of the air. Division Three arrested both Farouk & Lenny. David then committed the sin that Future Syd was so furious about – he altered Syd’s memories of events to put her at ease with him once more. So at ease, in fact, that they slept together. When he was confronted about it by his allies at Division Three, he realized that if not the worst bad guy ever, he was at least a horrible boyfriend to Syd. Before they could constrain him though, David teleported away with his ol’ pal Lenny (brilliantly played by the morbid Aubrey Plaza).

So yes, they did leave it dangling, and a third season will help us find resolution hopefully, but I doubt we’ll go further than that. It is an eight-episode order that starts tonight, a summer filler. I hope it is a bit wittier and scarier like the first year was. I’m pretty much in for the long haul though: 19 down, 8 to go.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/21/19

Phoebe’s Choice

This year’s run on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has perhaps the weirdest (most bad-ass?) role yet for Clark Gregg, the actor behind deceased SHIELD Director, Philip Coulson. This time around, he’s an inter-dimensional hero, tasked with tracking down and destroying the lay-line riding crystalline parasites known as the Shrike. His name is Sarge, and last week started with him considering making May his new recruit. Throughout the episode, there were all these weird parallels between what Sarge said and what Coulson said in her memories of him in his dying days; it was either a weird foreshadowing or real clumsy writing. Could go either way, really.

Daisy & Jemma’s deep space search team was hot on the heels of Fitz, when they were overcome by Chronicons in Confederacy warships. Enoch, Fitz’s new bff, was a Chronicon as well as the impetus for all of last season’s time-travel arc. So it was fitting that these members of his species, led by the domineering Atarah, were there to force the SHIELD science experts to reinvent time travel for their own purposes. Enoch let on that Fitz would & could do anything to save Jemma, so they sought to imprison her. Daisy assisted in a momentary escape, but Jemma realized she must work with Fitz on the matter, and so she surrendered to Atarah in exchange for Daisy and her crew’s freedom.

May survived a one-on-one fight against a Shrike, passing her test to be recruited into Sarge’s team, with their Fury Road tractor trailer truck and Rift motiff. She wasn’t interested in the job though and instead subdued Sarge and his one remaining, slightly unhinged soldier. Dr. Benson, the new resident SHIELD science guy (not in space), seemed to be trying to track down the Infinity Stones, when Daisy and her small crew returned to Earth finally. In the last moments of the episode, we watched Enoch confess to Fitz how he betrayed Jemma to the Chronicons to force Fitz to re-invent time travel. Harsh, bro. You are bffs no more.

This season is still as entertaining as any of them have been. I will never tire of watching May kick the crap out of people. Weird aliens and interdimensional doom seem par the course for this show, and that’s entertainment to me! I also see some Avengers: Endgame parallels going on here, but I don’t think we’ll get an outright claim that any of this connects to Thanos. We’ll see, though.

On tonight’s episode, “Inescapable,” they’ve fought through space, time, and alternate realities to find each other, and now, closer than ever, only their own demons can stop FitzSimmons’ reunion.
