If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/2/20

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice

I’m so excited about tonight’s premiere on FOX, their newest drama, Deputy, which kinda feels like it should be on CBS… According to FOX: From director/executive producer David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch, Suicide Squad), Deputy brings the spirit of a classic Western and a gritty authenticity to the modern cop drama. When the Los Angeles County’s Sheriff dies, an arcane rule forged back in the Wild West thrusts the most unlikely man into the job: a fifth-generation lawman (Stephen Dorff, True Detective), more comfortable taking down bad guys than navigating a sea of politics, who won’t rest until justice is served. Deputy also stars Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin, The Tick as Dr. Paula Reyes, LA County General Hospital’s chief trauma surgeon and Hollister’s wife; Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town) as Deputy Cade Ward; Bex Taylor-Klaus (13 Reasons Why) as Deputy Brianna Bishop; and Shane Paul McGhie (Unbelievable) as Deputy Joseph Harris; as well as Danielle Moné Truitt (Snowfall) & Mark Moses (Desperate Housewives).

There are some fun names attached, and the premise is wild & crazy but seems right up my alley, too. I’ve watched the first few minutes, and it starts off great, so I have my fingers crossed that’ll continue.

On tonight’s episode, “Graduation Day,” when Los Angeles’s newly elected Sheriff dies, Bill Hollister (Dorff) is suddenly propelled into the role leading one of the largest police forces in the world.

See how Hollister and the other deputies take Hollister’s sudden promotion tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Last Man Standing, Dr. Pimple Popper, The Great American Baking Show, & Beat Bobby Flay.

Overnight last night was the series premiere of The Circle on Netflix. Be yourself — or someone else? In this lighthearted and strategic competition show, the players must choose, all while chasing a cash prize. Status and strategy collide in this social experiment and competition show where online players flirt, befriend, and catfish their way toward $100,000.

Also overnight last night was the complete first season premiere of Messiah on Netflix. When a man in the Middle East appears to be performing miracles, a rift breaks out over whether he’s the Messiah or a fraud in this suspenseful drama. The show stars Beau Bridges (Masters of Sex, Into the West, Stargate: SG-1), Emily Kinney (The Walking Dead), Jackson Hurst (Drop Dead Diva, Sharp Objects), Michelle Monaghan (Open, The Path, True Detective), Philip Baker Hall (Wildlife, The Loop), Barbara Eve Harris (Forever), Jane Adams (Hung), John Ortiz (Luck, The Anatomy of Hope), Mehdi Dehbi (Tyrant), Melinda Page Hamilton (Damnation, Dig, Nurses), Stefania Lavie Owen (Chance), & Wil Traval (Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Red Widow), as well as Fares Landousil, Iqbal Theba, Nicole Rose Scimeca, Sayyid El Alami, & Tomer Sisley.

Finally, overnight last night was the complete first season premiere of Spinning Out, also on Netflix. After choking during an important performance, a competitive skater dealing with family issues and her own inner demons struggles to revive her career. The show stars January Jones (The Last Man on Earth, Mad Men), Sarah Wright Olsen (Marry Me, Mad Love), Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, Kaitlyn Leeb (Shadowhunters), Kaya Scodelario (The Pale Horse), & Will Kemp (Grace, NY-LON, Reign, Unveiled), as well as Willow Shields, Amanda Zhou, Charlie Hewson, Evan Roderick, Mitchell Edwards, & Svetlana Efremova.

Tonight is the series premiere of The Explosion Show on Science Channel at 10/9c. Subscribing to that old axiom that everything is better with explosions, whether it’s million-dollar movie stunts or state-of-the-art fireworks, a new Science Channel series will be ringing in the New Year with a BANG! Two notorious explosion experts — MythBuster and master of blowing things up, Tory Belleci, along with Nitro Circus daredevil and stuntman, “Streetbike” Tommy Passemante — host The Explosion Show. There are few who appreciate the sweet thrill of blowing stuff up as much as Tory and Tommy. Tory was one of the technical wizards behind some of the most memorable explosions on MythBusters. Streetbike Tommy is best known for his antics with Nitro Circus, the thrill seekers known for performing insanely dangerous stunts. Together, they’re on a mission to take audiences on an unpredictable ride, hanging with the experts, daredevils and professionals who are in the business of making things explode.

Finally, tonight is the series premiere of Alaska PD on A&E at 10/9c. The show brings viewers to America’s Last Frontier, where the line between civilization and lawlessness can be razor thin. Chronically shorthanded police departments across the state must turn to officers from the Lower 48 to fight a soaring crime rate. For the “newbies” it is a trial by fire as they learn first-hand that policing, like everything else, is different in Alaska. In a state where guns are carried as part of everyday life, officers often have to protect an entire town by themselves while enforcing laws many are unwilling to follow. They face numerous dangers found only in Alaska, not just from people who want to be free from the rules of society, but also from encounters with predatory animals roaming through town and sub-zero conditions that can be deadly and unrelenting. The series will follow Alaska’s law enforcement in Fairbanks, Kodiak, Kotzebue and Petersburg.

Tonight is the series premiere of Flirty Dancing on FOX at 8:01/7:01c (or after football). In the show, hosted by actress, producer and dancer Jenna Dewan, complete strangers are taught a dance routine, then meet for the first time on a blind date at a breathtaking location, as they dance together without saying a word. Singles will perform a different choreographed dance with each of two potential love interests, before choosing the one with whom he/she has the strongest connection. Will it be love at first dance?

Tonight is the series premiere of Dare Me on USA Network at 10/9c. Based on the acclaimed novel by Megan Abbott, who serves as writer and executive producer along with Gina Fattore, the show is an unflinching exploration of teen angst, jealousy, loyalty and the dynamics of power in a small Midwestern town. Peering behind the all-American facade, the series dives into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading. It follows the fraught relationship between two best friends (Herizen Guardiola, The Get Down, and Marlo Kelly) after a new coach (Willa Fitzgerald, Behind Enemy Lines, Little Women, Scream) arrives to bring their team to prominence. While the girls’ friendship is put to the test, their young lives are changed forever when a shocking crime rocks their quiet rust belt town. Part coming-of-age story, part sport drama, part murder mystery, the show exposes the physical and psychological extremes that some young women are willing to endure in order to get ahead. The show also stars Amanda Brugel (Eyewitness), Chris Zylka (Bloodlines, The Leftovers, The Secret Circle, Teen Spirit), Joyful Drake (Let’s Stay Together), (Mamma Dallas, MOB, Opposite Sex), Rob Heaps (Imposters), Tammy Blanchard (Amish Grace, Empire State, Hoke, Living Proof, Sybil), & Zach Roerig (The Vampire Diaries), as well as Adrian Walters, Alison Thornton, Antonio J. Bell, & Taveeta Syzmanowicz.

Finally, tonight is the series premiere of Lost in the Wild on Travel Channel at 11/10c. Earth’s lush terrain and shining seas can hide tales of adventures gone terribly wrong, where people have met mysterious ill-fated ends. With little evidence and few fragmented clues, the trail to truth eventually runs cold. In this new series, veteran explorers J.J. Kelley and Kinga Philipps are reinvestigating these perplexing cases, venturing into the perilous unknown in search of answers. In each one-hour episode, filmmaker and explorer J.J. Kelley and journalist Kinga Philipps retrace the harrowing steps of adventurers whose journeys took an unexpected turn for the worse. Picking up where the official investigation has ended, the duo sets off on foot to follow the path they believe will lead them to answers, interviewing witnesses and locals along the way. From trekking deep in the Amazon jungle in search of idealists looking for a lost city to climbing a treacherous mountain in Africa where dozens have vanished, the duo combine their wilderness and sleuthing skills to navigate their way toward the truth. Confronted with risky and uncertain situations, they test their own limits to investigate missed clues and new evidence behind these baffling cases.
