Kyle’s Choice
Early this morning, Netflix dropped the entire first season of new supernatural drama Dark. The series follows the interconnected lives of four families in the small German town of Winden. As the series opens, a man inexplicably hangs himself, leaving a note with the instructions that his letter should not be opened before a certain date and time. The show then jumps forward several months later as the man’s family members are each still coping with the loss in his or her own way. Son Jonas is constantly waking up in night sweats after having vivid dreams, while his mother is having a secret affair with married policeman Ulrich. Ulrich, who has three kids of his own, has been investigating the disappearance of teenager Erik Obendorf, who has been missing for 13 days, and his only lead is that someone reported seeing a “monster†in the woods.
As the date and time marked on the suicide letter approaches, strange things start to happen in the town. A creepy old man wanders the streets muttering that “it’s all going to happen again.†The teenager’s disappearance is eerily similar to another incident that happened in the town 33 years earlier, to Ulrich’s brother. As the town struggles to find the missing teenager, a second child goes missing, and things take a very unexpected twist that ties back to 1986.
Dark is presented in German with English subtitles. The series has a very dark look and slow burn, which reminded me a lot of the French series Les Revenants. The series is set in an overcast, creepy small town, where everyone seems to have secrets to hide. The town is host to a nuclear power plant that is in the process of shutting down, and any tourism has dried up due to the missing-child incident. There are a lot of characters and relationships introduced in the first two episodes, and it takes some time to understand who is who and what’s going on. However, by the end of the second episode, there’s a really interesting twist that made me curious to check out more once the entire season was available to watch today.
