Saturday is the series premiere of The Last Kingdom on BBC America at 10/9c. This is a contemporary story of redemption, vengeance, and self-discovery set against the birth of England. It follows young warrior and outsider, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), on a fierce mission to reclaim his birthright. Eleven-year-old Uhtred was born a Saxon in 9th century Northumbria. He watches from a cliff top as invading Danish ships move toward his home, not knowing that his future will soon be turned upside-down. Young Uhtred witnesses his father killed and the Saxon army defeated. That same day he is taken by the Danish warlord, Earl Ragnar (Peter Gantzler). His fellow captive is a feisty, sharp-tongued girl named Brida (Emily Cox). The orphans are brought up in the Danish camp. It also stars Adrian Bower, Alexandre Willaume, David Dawson, Henning Valin Jakobsen, Ian Hart, Joseph Millson, Matthew Macfadyen, Rune Temte, Rutger Hauer, Thomas W. Gabrielsson, Tobias Santelmann, & Tom Taylor.
Tonight is also the season premiere of Unwrapped 2.0 on Food Network at 8/7c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 8:30/7:30c.
Finally, tonight is a new episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC at 11:29/10:29c, with host Amy Schumer and musical guest The Weeknd.

Last season, Undateable did a special live episode, which must have done pretty well, as that the series was renewed for an all-live third season, which premieres tonight. The last time a TV show tried to do this was back in 1992, when the Fox comedy Roc went live for its second season. I like the unpredictable nature of live TV, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the show changes with this new format. And I’ll be anxiously watching for flubbed lines and misbehaving props.
For last year’s one-off special, they pulled in a lot of familiar faces from series creator Bill Lawrence’s previous programs. However, with a full season of episodes ahead, I don’t think they can rely on that kind of all-in-one-episode kind of stunt casting every week. Though, I’m sure we can expect to see some fun guest stars throughout the season.
On tonight’s double-length premiere, “A Will They Walks Into a Bar/A Won’t They Walks Into a Bar,” Danny interferes as Justin and Candace plan on taking things to the next level. Also: Burski surprises the gang with an announcement; and Leslie sets out to reinvent her look. Danny continues to interfere when Justin and Candace consider taking things to the next level. Meanwhile, the gang reacts to Burski’s surprise announcement, and Leslie tries to reinvent her look.

Through a growing number of impressive original series, Netflix has established a middle ground between television and cinema. Series that debut with the streaming service are meant to be “binge watched,” or at least viewed in short time, meaning they’re consumed like lengthy films. On the other hand, the episodic and season-based format generally keeps these same programs more closely related to TV. And because of this classification (and despite the binge watching), Netflix has seemingly chosen to make fans wait a year between new seasons of its original series, mimicking the style of ordinary television.
Thus, we still have a while to wait before Daredevil rolls out its second season, but already the Netflix/Marvel project is producing an active rumor and news mill. The debut season was widely praised by critics, earning a glowing 98% at Rotten Tomatoes and frequently being cited as a necessary foray into darker, more adult action for the “Marvel Cinematic Universe.” And now the second season is being anticipated as a launchpad for what’s about to become a lengthy, multi-show initiative for Netflix and Marvel; “The Defenders,” another branch of Marvel heroes, will all receive Netflix shows, with Daredevil leading the way.
Naturally there are still a lot of questions about the extent of this project and the specific nature of the follow-up shows, but for now we can confirm that Daredevil has already added two very major characters from the comics. Let’s take a look at those two and how they figure to be received by the insatiable superhero cinema audience.
