heroesreborn924smallNBC’s supernatural series Heroes came to an abrupt end 5 years ago. Tonight, viewers are transported back into that world with the 2-hour premiere of the new limited series Heroes Reborn. This sequel series takes place in the present, so it has also been a long time since the events of the original series. A year prior, a terrorist attack left the town of Odessa, Texas, in ruins. Folks have blamed those with extraordinary powers for the deadly event, and vigilantes like married couple Luke (Zachary Levi, Chuck) and Joanne (Judith Shekoni, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2) are hunting them down to get vengeance for those they lost. So these evolved beings – or Evos – must remain in hiding, keeping their powers secret for fear of their own safety. Meanwhile, Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) has also shed his old secret life, but conspiracy theorist Quentin Frady (Henry Zebrowski, A to Z) soon opens his eyes to the fact that there may be more to the Odessa tragedy and an even more sinister plot in the works that threatens all of mankind.

The series also stars Robbie Kay (Once Upon a Time), Gatlin Green (Criminal Minds), Danika Yarosh (Shameless), Kiki Sukezane, (Death Yankee 3), Ryan Guzman (The Boy Next Door), and Rya Kihlstedt (Masters of Sex). And over the course of the season, we will see a lot more familiar faces from the original series pop in for short arcs, including Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg), Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), and the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis).

I really enjoyed tonight’s 2-hour premiere. I could have easily marathoned the entire 13 episodes had the screeners been available! While folks who have seen some of the original series will understand some of the characters and events more immediately, the series is also extremely accessible to others who have either never seen Heroes or never completed it. Folks who gave up on the original series should definitely check back in for this sequel. I have high hopes that since it is being billed as a limited series, the show will be more like how the original Heroes was envisioned: telling a complete story within a single season.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I had the opportunity to participate in the press room Q&As with the cast and creator of the series. You can find my videos at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s 2-hour episode, “Brave New World,” in a new world order, people with extraordinary abilities are in hiding and are hunted by those with nefarious motives following a catastrophic terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas.

Check out this fun new “spinoff” tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Grey’s Anatomy, The Player, Married, Review with Forrest MacNeil, and Documentary Now!.

limitless922smallPremiere week continues, and another drama that I’m definitely checking out is CBS’s Limitless. I haven’t seen the movie this is based on, but I’ve heard good things. Brian Finch (Jake McDorman, Manhattan Love Story, Greek) discovers NZT, a drug which boosts brain power by a huge percentage, giving the user extraordinary cognitive abilities. He is found out by FBI Special Agent Rebecca Harris (Jennifer Carpenter, Dexter) and is coerced into helping the FBI solve some of their most complex cases. Working with them is Special Agent Boyle (Hill Harper, CSI: NY), and their boss at the FBI is Nasreen “Naz” Pouran (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Grimm, Hostages). Brian also has a secret relationship with Senator Edward Mora (Bradley Cooper, Alias and the Limitless movie), who is a presidential hopeful and regular user of NZT himself.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Brian Finch’s life takes an extraordinary turn when he uses a mysterious drug, NZT, that allows him to access his full brain capacity. However, when an NZT-related murder lands Brian on the FBI’s radar, he uses the drug in an attempt to stay ahead of the authorities long enough to clear his name.

Check out this new fast-paced drama tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing NCIS, The Muppets, NCIS: NOLA, Chopped, & Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris.

rookieblue93smallWhat a rollercoaster this season of Rookie Blue has been, and tonight it all comes to a head. Last week, we watched as Andy started her usual panic mode when things got rough between her and Sam, but this time, Sam was the mature one and told Andy they should try something different this time, staying together. Andy admits that she was never going anywhere at all and that she loved him. I was swooning when Sam said he loved the baby and wanted more babies with Andy — a long time coming, but I’m certainly glad we got here. Elsewhere, we watched as Gail was put in the difficult position of testifying with her father putting pressure on her to lie so that Steve had a good alibi. Steve stood up and did the right thing by confessing to the judge and taking a plea deal. I’m interested in seeing what happens with Gail and Sophie, because it’d be a shame to see her end up with someone else.

On tonight’s finale, “Epiphanies,” as the restructuring of 15 Division looms, Andy and Sam’s wedding comes just in time for everyone to celebrate one last time. But when Andy is taken off-course by a hitchhiker and then stranded on the side of the road with a dying man, she finds herself with no way to get help — or let Sam know her situation. Will she be able to save the man’s life? And will she make it to her wedding?

Tune in to ABC at 10/9c to see how it all ends up.

I’ll also be watching Food Fighters, Chopped, and Mistresses.

rookieblue813smallRookie Blue has had a good season so far. I was afraid that Marlo’s pregnancy would mean major trouble for Sam and Andy, but so far, they’ve been able to work through it. Hopefully that continues. Meanwhile, Oliver is still a suspect for being the dirty cop and planting the bomb, but I have no doubt whatsoever that they’ll clear his name. The question is: Is Steve Peck really dirty or is this some sort of misdirection?

On tonight’s episode, “Integrity Test,” with Oliver still the prime suspect in the bombing of 15 Division’s evidence room, Andy, Dov, Gail, and Nick come up with a risky and potentially career-ending plan to prove Oliver is being set up by Commissioner Alonso Santana. Meanwhile, Traci shadows Steve Peck, hoping to calm her fears about his involvement in the bombing.

See what Traci learns tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Boom!, Food Fighters, Man vs Child: Chef Showdown, Beat Bobby Flay, & Geeks Who Drink.

rookieblue79smallIt’s been a great season of Rookie Blue so far. I have to admit that I had my doubts, given the way they ended last season with Marlo’s pregnancy and how the writers have treated Andy & Sam in the past. But they both seem to be committed to making it work, and Marlo (so far) doesn’t seem to want to get in the middle of them. How it will continue to play out, I don’t know, but I have my fingers crossed. Meanwhile, last week’s story line with the ultra-conservative/strict/abusive father was crazy. It got even crazier when the little boy tried to poison his sister. I was glad they were able to convince the mom to get her and the kids out of their home situation.

On tonight’s episode, “Uprising,” as tensions are running high in an over-capacity women’s correctional facility, a riot breaks out while Andy, Juliet, Nick, and Gail are there to transfer two inmates. The officers are separated, and a lock-down situation leads to Andy and Juliet being trapped with a dangerous prisoner who is desperate to prove her innocence. Meanwhile, Sam shows up at Marlo’s ultrasound and stays by her side while they anxiously wait to hear if something’s wrong with the baby. Episode was directed by series star Gregory Smith.

See if the officers get out of the prison riot safely tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Boom!, Food Fighters, Complications, Beat Bobby Flay, & Lip Sync Battle.
