Jenny’s Choice

Last week’s psych case on Chicago Med was heartbreaking. A father brought his (adult) daughter in, claiming he’d found her tied to the bed in his ex-wife’s house. When the mother came rushing in, she explained her daughter was possessed and she was trying to get an exorcism done to her. Of course, in the end Dr. Charles figured out that the young woman had basically just had a psychotic break of sorts after reconnecting with her father after a long time apart…because the father had sexually abused her as a little girl. It was heartbreaking. (And that was just the first father/daughter story of the night. The second was Reese’s father basically “breaking up” with her, telling her he didn’t really love her, didn’t want to see her anymore, didn’t need her for anything, in order to show Dr. Charles that he was self-sufficient. Jeez. Poor Reese…)

The big case of the week, though, was a set of conjoined twin babies. They were gearing up to separate them after a few more weeks, but one of the twins was sick, and after learning that the baby was experiencing heart failure, what to do about it divided the doctors. Leaving the twins joined now would likely kill them both. According to Connor was sure he could get the sick twin better without having to do the separation now. But one of the other doctors thinks that’s too risky and they’re better off doing the separation and having a near 100 percent chance of saving the second baby’s life. The parents agreed to that when Connor was told he couldn’t even give them his option…but he stopped them right before the procedure was about to get underway and told them his opinion, and they agreed to try it. Thankfully, it turned out well and both babies were alive and well to continue the wait for the agreed-upon separation surgery.

And on another sad case, Will’s patient was misdiagnosed as having diverticulitis, when in reality he had sarcoidosis, an inflammatory condition that will require ongoing medication. Unfortunately, the man was upset because he’d had to change their health insurance in order to help pay for their son’s college tuition, so all the tests and stuff Will ran weren’t covered because they were out of network. You couldn’t help but feel bad for the guy.

On the personal side of things, Maggie asked Barry for help in fudging the expiration date on her paramedic’s license, which would mean she wouldn’t be in trouble for doing the tracheotomy in the previous episode, and he agreed. Thankfully it wasn’t needed because the patient’s family backed her, saying she saved their loved one. So Maggie’s back at work. Natalie is still keeping Will at arm’s length, needing space from him. And Ethan’s sister came to him, asking if she could crash with him for a while since she was kicked out of her apartment. She claimed it was because she complained to the manager so often about the water temp or something… But after she had a party at his apartment even after he specifically said not to, begging April to keep it to herself when she found out, I don’t know… Something’s going to happen with her, I think. And finally, Natalie is still giving Will almost a cold shoulder after telling him before that she needs a break. Bah!

On tonight’s episode, “An Inconvenient Truth,” after taking the lead on a surgery, Dr. Bekker feels the heat after something goes wrong. Dr. Manning and Dr. Charles are faced with a tough decision concerning the gender of a 9-year-old girl. April and Dr. Reese rush to find the son of a dying patient. Goodwin’s godson is admitted to the hospital.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/3/18

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, TBS premieres the new comedy The Last O.G.. Tracy Morgan (30 Rock, SNL) stars as Tray, a man who is released from prison after spending 15 years behind bars for selling drugs. However, he soon discovers that the world has changed a lot while he was in prison. Tray’s Brooklyn neighborhood has been gentrified and no longer resembles the hood he grew up in. His former girlfriend Shay (Tiffany Haddish, The Carmichael Show, Girls Trip) is now married to a white guy (Ryan Gaul, Superstore), who’s been helping to raise the teenage twins (Taylor Mosby & Dante Hoagland) Tray never even knew he had. Now Tray has put his life back together if he wants to be a part of his kids’ lives. Helping Tray adjust to his new life on the outside are his cousin Bobby (Allen Maldonado, black-ish) and halfway house administrator/wannabe comedian Mullins (Cedric the Entertainer).

This series has such a great cast, and it is especially great to see Tracy Morgan doing well and back doing what he does best. Tonight’s premiere primarily just introduces the characters and sets up the show’s premise, but it looks like this should be a really fun and heartwarming show once it gets going. Much like the other TBS comedies, the series will be serialized in its storytelling. Since I am an all or none type of person when it comes to watching a TV series, I definitely prefer this more serialized format, rather than a traditional sitcom that is more of a drop in/drop out setup that resets the status quo each week. I like to see the characters and storyline progress over the course of a season.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” ex-con Tray is shocked to see how much the world has changed when he’s released from prison for good behavior after a 15-year stint.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/27/18

Jenny’s Choice #1

I was a big fan of Roseanne back in the day. There was something just…real about them. They didn’t put on airs, and unlike a lot of shows nowadays, it wasn’t a show about wealthy people and their first-world problems. They were relatable in that the problems they had, I could see myself having those same problems. So when I heard they were bringing it back, I was excited but nervous. Then every little piece of news that came out about it made me happy: same cast, same set, Dan is alive, etc etc etc. Even Johnny Galecki, who is busy over on another network on The Big Bang Theory, is going to be back on an episode as David. And both Beckys are back — the original Becky (Lecy Goranson) is back as Becky, while Sarah Chalke (Becky #2) is guest starring on a few episodes in a special role opposite Goranson. The nostalgia factor is high in this one, I swear. One original character not back is Becky’s husband Mark. The actor, Glenn Quinn, died of a drug overdose in 2002. But Darlene’s son is named Mark after the character, so he’s there in spirit.

Then I saw the first two episodes, and it really blew me away. It’s still the same down to earth, relatable, funny show from the 80s/90s, but they’ve kept it real. Dan and Roseanne are older, so there are health concerns (including Dan wearing a CPAP breathing machine when he sleeps and Roseanne nursing a bad knee), financial and insurance concerns, and adult children/grandchildren moving back in (like is so common now). The snark is still the same, the humor is there, yet everything is updated to 2018: Dan and Roseanne are Trump supporters, Darlene’s son is gender-fluid, and even the opioid crisis plays a part in the new episodes. It’s all really well done and makes me so glad it’s back.

On tonight’s first half hour of the 1-hour episode, “Twenty Years to Life,” Roseanne and Dan adjust to living under the same roof with Darlene and her two children, Harris and Mark, when Darlene loses her job. Meanwhile, Becky announces she is going to be a surrogate to make extra money; and Roseanne and Jackie are at odds with one another. Then in the second half hour, “Dress to Impress,” Darlene’s son, Mark, gets caught with a pocket knife after being bullied on the first day of his new school. Meanwhile, Becky invites Andrea over to meet the family and is nervous to bring her home.

Don’t miss the start of the revival tonight on ABC at 8/7c.

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Rise, the newest drama from series creator Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) and Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller, premieres on NBC. Lou Mazzuchelli (Josh Radnor, How I Met Your Mother) has been teaching high school English in a small working-class Pennsylvania town for 17 years. He grows more and more disillusioned and disheartened each year and is doubting his ability to inspire and motivate his students. So he decides to take over the school’s lackluster theater department – much to the chagrin of Tracey Wolfe (Rosie Perez, Fearless), who had been running the department for the past 11 years. Mr. Mazzuchelli wants to really shake things up from the usual boring, safe plays the department has always done and put on something edgier, like “Spring Awakening.” He also wants to change up the usual cast, putting students in roles they may not be comfortable with and bringing in students who may not even realize their hidden potential, such as the shy Lilette Suarez (Auli’i Cravalho, Moana) and football star Robbie Thorne (Damon J. Gillespie). Though, Mr. Mazzuchelli has a tough battle in front of him as he faces pushback from the football coach (Joe Tippett), the principal, and concerned parents.

The series feels extremely similar to Friday Night Lights but set in the musical theater stage instead of on the football field (though that is also a big part of this town). The show also has a very similar look and feel to FNL, with its dark, grainy, gritty look and use of a shaky cam to make the viewer feel a part of what’s going on on-screen. The series also delves into the dramatic personal and home lives/issues of the characters. Mr. Mazzuchelli has a supportive wife (Marley Shelton, Mad Men) who teaches piano and three children at home, the oldest of whom is still a teenager but also an alcoholic (Casey W. Johnson, GLOW). The students also have their own family issues. One has a mother with a reputation for sleeping around, another has a mother in the hospital, another might be gay but has very conservative religious parents, another is transgender, another is homeless, and so on. It looks like this series is going to be a very emotional and inspirational show, filled with a lot of great musical performances, as we see how Mr. Mazzuchelli finds a way to change the lives of these young men and women and reinvigorate his own thirst for teaching, through this musical theater program.

While I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere, if I had one complaint, it would be the excessive use of the shaky-cam. This was the main thing that led me to eventually stop watching FNL. I enjoy this story and characters, the performances are great, and I definitely want to see more, but I want to feel like I’ve been taken on an emotional roller-coaster and not an actual roller-coaster.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” Lou petitions to take over as director of the school’s theater program in an attempt to revitalize his passion for teaching; he decides to make the school musical more provocative.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/23/18

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, the hilarious TBS comedy, The Detour, returns for its third season. Last season, the Parker family moved to New York City, where they ran into Robin’s con-man father, J.R., who managed to get them involved in one of his seedy plans. J.R. was illegally obtaining pieces of an infamous statue of Saddam Hussein that he planned to reconstruct on one of his properties. At the end of the season, J.R. had kidnapped Delilah & Jareb and took them with him to Cuba. After rescuing their children, Robin, Nate, and the kids accidentally found themselves in a boat with Cubans who were defecting to America. However, the Parkers were still wanted by the FBI for the questionable import/exporting business J.R. got them mixed up in.

As the third season begins, the Parkers have been on the run for the past year, traveling from state to state, trying to keep a low profile from the USPIS. They now find themselves in Alaska, during the period when it is sunny 24 hours a day. They are tired of running and decide to try make a home there, but as usual, nothing ever really goes as planned for the Parkers!

This show constantly has me laughing out loud. I love how the series manages to completely reinvent itself each season (even down to the theme song). Each year the Parkers find themselves in some new setting/predicament, and despite their best intentions, things only get worse for them as the season progresses. However, dumb luck always seems to prevail with the Parkers. I also really enjoy the show’s no-holds-barred humor. The writers don’t worry about being politically correct, and no situation is too inappropriate. The cast is fantastic and really play well off one another. Jason Jones & Natalie Zea make Nate and Robin feel like a realistic couple, and the actors who play their children (Ashley Gerasimovich & Liam Carroll) are hilarious. This season, Graham Greene (Longmire) joins the cast as one the Parkers’ new Alaskan neighbors.

On tonight’s premiere, “The Run,” the Parkers finally settle in Alaska after a year on the lam, believing it to be the last place anyone would look for them, but their lies and deceits soon come back to haunt them.
