The Casino On The Small Screen – The Most Memorable Gambling Scenes in Television

Over the years, the casino and gambling in general have featured in a wide array of television series, appearing in various titles, from cult classics such as Friends to animated fan favourite The Simpsons. This is partly because the world of gambling is extremely easy to incorporate into most scenarios and the fact that the pastime is often both peculiar and exhilarating in equal measure means that it translates to the small screen incredibly well. With that being said, there are dozens of examples of TV series dedicating entire episodes to gambling and the casino. Below are eight of our favourite scenes which serve to illustrate the added value that gambling has when incorporated properly.

The Simpsons

It’s possible that The Simpsons has referenced gambling and the casino more than any other animated show, which would make sense, as it’s the longest running series of its kind. From the very first episode, where Homer rescues Santa’s Little Helper from the greyhound track to Homer and Ned being tricked into getting married in Las Vegas, there have been a number of classic moments relating to the casino, but the episode that perfectly encapsulates everything good, bad, or indifferent about gambling is Season 5 Episode 10. The aptly named “How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Legalise Gambling” is intended to be a satirical look at Las Vegas, focusing on the panic which sweeps Springfield when plans for a casino to be built within the town are approved.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/31/14

I spent the last week visiting with my dad, and it was an incredible visit. I have missed him so much. Tonight, I’m catching up on TV now that I’ve got my living room back to myself, and what a night to catch up on. Check out what we’re recommending.

Megan’s Choice

thevoice2013smallThe Voice has been my favorite singing competition show since the moment it premiered, and it continues to get better in my eyes. This new round that they’ve added, which starts tonight with the fabulous Chris Martin from Coldplay coming on to mentor all the teams, is one of the most exciting moments for me. First, I love Coldplay, and second, I like any round that adds pressure for the artists to step it up to the next level. I am cheering for Team Adam and Team Usher as a whole, but I have a soft spot for Josh from Team Adam because he is just astounding with the level of his talent. The only part of the show I don’t like is Shakira. Although I was never a big fan of Christina, I’d still rather have her on the show instead of Shakira.

On tonight’s episode, “The Battles, Round 2,” battle rounds continue as the coaches and top recording artists offer advice to the contestants.

To see how the artists handle working with the incredible Chris Martin, tune in to NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching How I Met Your Mother, Intelligence, The Blacklist, Star-Crossed, Bones, Mom, The Following, and Friends with Better Lives.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/10/14

What a difference a week makes. Last week, my kiddo was off from school on Monday because of snow. Yesterday? Just over 60 degrees outside. Gotta love Kansas… On a good note, there’s some really great TV on tonight, so at least that’s consistent! Check out our recommendations. 🙂

believe310smallTonight, JJ Abrams brings another new show to TV that could very well become one of my all-time favorites. Believe is about a ten-year-old little girl named Bo who, since the age of two, has had gifts such as levitation, telekinesis, the ability to control nature, and even the ability to predict the future. She was raised by a small group known as the “True Believers,” kept safe from harm and other people who would forcibly use her gifts for personal gain. But as she’s grown, her powers have gotten stronger, and her life and future are in jeopardy, so the “Believers” turn to the one person they…believe can keep her safe and be her full-time guardian: Tate. The problem is, Tate is on death row after being wrongfully imprisoned, so they must break him out. The show is their journey.

When I saw this pilot, I fell in love with it, more so than possibly any other pilot last summer. The cast is great, the stories are great, the action is great… I have been waiting on pins and needles to be able to share it with all of you and with my family, who didn’t watch the pilot with me last summer.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” a young girl who was born with extraordinary powers gains an unlikely protector out of a death row escapee who was wrongfully imprisoned, as the two flee from malevolent forces that want to use the girl’s abilities to take control of the world.

See if you become a “Believer” like me tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/27/14

Ahh, welcome back freezing temperatures. It’s been pretty mild here lately—Saturday was in the high 40s, while it was closer to 60 yesterday! Today? The high is supposed to be 21. Brrr. Of course, I’m just thankful I’m not in Canada with Megan. I love you, girl, but no way am I living up there. 😉 While I curl up under a blanket, check out our recommendations. 🙂

castle127smallMy first pick tonight is the new episode of Castle. Last week was another great one, a rip on the “Miley Cyrus and other teen pop stars in the news.” You kinda had to feel bad for the girl, who’d pretty much been railroaded into becoming who she was. And then to find out that her mom was the one who killed her lookalike to cover up the fact that she’d hired the girl to pose in a compromising position with her daughter’s ex-boyfriend in the hopes of breaking up her and her current boyfriend—who was a really good guy and helping her to get away from the life she no longer was happy living. My favorite parts had to be everything with Alexis—from talking about the singer in front of her, to going to her apartment to switch phones, etc. And then, joy of joys, it seemed at the end like Alexis was going to break up with Pi. One can only hope, yeah? 😉

On tonight’s episode, “Dressed to Kill,” when the assistant to Modern Fashion Magazine’s dictatorial editor Matilda King (guest star Franes fisher) is found murdered, Castle and Beckett are thrust into the glitzy, ruthless world of high fashion in their search for the killer. Meanwhile Beckett’s history in the modelling world gets her access to a very special wedding surprise.

See Castle’s reaction to Beckett’s modeling past tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/13/14

It’s crazy how fast the weekend went. Unfortunately, it’s back to work today. There’s good news, though, because tonight is a really busy night of TV, with lots of great stuff on. We’re here to hopefully help you narrow your choices down, but given that Megan & I are both recommending two shows, I’m not sure how much help we are! *laugh* Still, we’ll do our best. 😉

bitten113smallMy first pick tonight is the series premiere of Bitten on Syfy. The show is based on the “Women of the Otherworld” novels by Kelley Armstrong, and stars Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, Ted) as Elena Michaels, the lone female werewolf in existence. Desperate to escape both a world she never wanted to be part of and the man who turned her into a werewolf, Elena abandoned her Pack and took refuge in a new city. There, she works as a photographer and hides her werewolf existence from her new boyfriend. She finds herself back at Stonehaven, the werewolves’ ancestral domain, after dead bodies start piling up. The show also stars Greg Bryk (A History of Violence) as werewolf Pack “Alpha” Jeremy Danvers, Greyston Holt (Alcatraz) as Elena’s werewolf ex-boyfriend Clayton Danvers, and Paul Greene (The Client List) as Elena’s current beau, Philip McAdams.

I love the book series, but I’m not sold on the show yet. I’ve seen the first three minutes (didn’t have time to watch the screener that was sent out), and it starts out with a rather graphic sex scene for even regular cable. I was planning to let my 16yo son watch this show with me, but talk about uncomfortable… Kyle’s seen the first episode, and he’s not sure he’ll watch any more. But I’m recommending it because I do love the books, so I’m hoping the show will get better than he said the pilot is.

On tonight’s episode, “Summons,” the lone female werewolf in existence, who wanted to escape that life and who abandoned her back and moved to a new city, is summoned back to her Pack when bodies begin to turn up in her Pack’s backyard, Stonehaven, the werewolves’ ancestral domain.

To see if this new show is for you, tune in to Syfy at 10/9c.
