americanodyssey45smallApril is such a busy month for new TV — tonight there are 6 new/returning shows alone! However, one of these new shows, American Odyssey, is one that I have been anxiously awaiting since I first saw the pilot last summer! Sergeant Odelle Ballard (Anna Friel, Pushing Daisies) is an American special operations soldier sent on a secret mission to find the wife of an Al Qaea leader in Mali, North Africa. After she comes across some documents that prove a US corporation was funding Al Qaeda, she finds herself a target. Now she is stranded abroad, struggling to find any way home. Meanwhile, back on US soil, former U.S. attorney turned corporate lawyer Peter Decker (Peter Facinelli, Nurse Jackie) discovers discrepancies in the financials of a big corporate merger he is working on; and political activist Harrison Walters (Jake Robinson, The Carrie Diaries) meets hacker Bob Offer (Nate Mooney, The Riches), who claims to have uncovered a big military cover-up involving Sergeant Ballard.

The amazing cast also includes Jim True-Frost (The Wire), Sadie Sink, Omar Ghazaoui, Elena Kampouris (Men, Women & Children), Daniella Pineda, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost), and Treat Williams (Everwood).

Tonight’s premiere is really well done — it was one of my favorite pilots last year, and I don’t understand why it has taken so long to be added to NBC’s schedule! The show has the epic look and feel of a feature film, and tonight’s premiere sets up a really interesting conspiracy, as well as Ballard’s emotional journey to return home (which is the only aspect of the show that NBC seems to be promoting in its ads). However, the series is an intense, dramatic political thriller — you don’t know who’s hiding what and who can be trusted, and whenever someone gets too close to the truth, they wind up dead. I’m excited to see how these three intertwined stories come together and how it all plays out.

On tonight’s episode, “Gone Elvis,” Sgt. Ballard stumbles upon incriminating computer files, only to become the sole survivor of an attack on her unit, in the series premiere of this drama centering on an international conspiracy and its impact on three strangers.

Find out how Sgt. Ballard survives and see the start of her struggle for home tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Madam Secretary, The Good Wife, A.D. The Bible Continues, Mad Men, The Royals, Shameless, Happyish, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

hawaiifiveo43smallIt’s been three weeks since the last new episode of Hawaii Five-0 (what is UP with the random breaks this second half of the season for so many shows?), and it was a great one. Steve was at Odell’s barbershop getting a haircut and old-fashioned shave, when a young man, bleeding from a gunshot wound, came stumbling in. They tried to stop the bleeding and Steve had to hold the bad guys off without his gun, which he’d left in his car, when they came to get the bleeding guy. There was a lot of action, a lot of bullets flying, and in the end, Steve figured out who was gunning for the kid. But it turned out the young guy was the bad guy’s son, and the father had figured out that his son was responsible for a good number of children going missing — he’d been kidnapping…and doing whatever else to…them for a while. He was trying to stop his son the only way he knew how without turning him in to the police. Seeing Steve break down was heartbreaking. Meanwhile, Jerry was accused of a string of home invasions, but Chin helped track down the guy who’d really been doing it. Jerry was hysterical as he freaked out over being in lockup for just a few hours. Overall, it was really a great episode — one of my favorite in a while.

I’ve seen tonight’s episode, and again, it’s a killer, emotionally. Michelle Hurd is back as Grover’s wife — and for a much bigger role this time. Also guest starring are Mykelti Williamson (Justified, 24, Boomtown, The Fugitive, & tons more) and Kim Wayans (Reckless, In Living Color). It’s really a terrific episode, and Grover absolutely shines.

On tonight’s episode, “’Ike Hanau,” when Grover’s oldest and closest friend tells him he witnessed his wife fall off a cliff to her death, Grover’s gut instinct tells him that this was no accident. Also, Danny and Dr. Shaw get trapped in an elevator with a dead body in need of processing.

To see what Grover’s gut is telling him, tune in to CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Amazing Race, Grimm, Last Man Standing, Cristela, Bride By Design, & Blue Bloods.

chicagopd41smallWhen Chicago PD first started, I was worried I wouldn’t like it because I remember Voight as being nothing but a corrupt…jerk (to put it politely) after he had the to-do with Casey on Chicago Fire. But he quickly grew on me. Does he still lean toward doing things on the wrong side of the line? Yeah, a lot of the time. But we’ve only seen him use his powers for good, which has been great. Last week, we saw him kidnap a diplomat from Argentina in order to help find out who murdered a young woman Ruzek had befriended while undercover with a protest group. I felt really bad for Ruzek, who took her death really hard because he knew she was a sweet girl who’d gotten mixed up in bad stuff. I loved how he finally leaned on Burgess for comfort. And finally, we met Halstead’s doctor brother, who came to Chicago for a seemingly innocent visit, but Halstead already knows (as do we) that there is some other reason for him to be here…

I have a feeling it’s going to be a hard episode tonight, as it’s going to pit Halstead (who is a true stand-up guy) against Voight when Voight crosses that line once more (but again, I think it’ll be for a good cause. Not saying that’ll excuse it. Just that it isn’t for his own gain.), and that scares me because I like Voight, but I LOVE Halstead. *sigh*

On tonight’s episode, “Get Back to Even,” Intelligence responds to a drug robbery gone wrong, and in their investigation, it’s revealed that the first person Voight ever gave his card to is linked to a double murder. Voight will fight to keep her family safe. At the same time, we learn the real reason why Halstead’s brother Will (guest star Nick Gehlfuss) came to Chicago. Meanwhile Desk Sgt. Platt takes care of a young girl at district.

Find out why Will is there and what tension there’s going to be with Voight tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Mysteries of Laura, Young & Hungry, The Goldbergs, Law & Order: SVU, Modern Family, Mystery Diners, black-ish, Best New Restaurant, Hot in Cleveland, & The Soul Man.

ncisla330smallLast week on NCIS: LA, sure, there was a case, but the bigger revelation was that Deeks is being investigated by Internal Affairs at the LAPD. Now, I have a huge complaint about that, given how little he’s actually worked with them the last six years. Why, all of a sudden, are they investigating him? What in the world could they suddenly have that needs investigating? On the actual case front, it was actually really interesting. FBI agents had set up a sting on a terrorist group that was buying explosives, but after they stopped them from driving away, their van blew up with three FBI agents inside it. NCIS was supposed to find out if the explosives were bad, but after learning more, they were tasked with figuring out who was behind the attack. It turned out to be a man whose nephew had been sent to prison for trying to blow up his school, but he blamed the FBI for recruiting the kid in the first place. In the end, the team was, of course, able to save the day. Kensi and Deeks spent the episode apart, with Deeks paired with Callen and Kensi paired with Sam. They thought it was because Hetty had found out about their relationship, but really it had more to do with the woman following them — the IA detective from LAPD. Hopefully the show isn’t setting it up so Deeks is somehow dirty. That would REALLY piss me off…

On tonight’s episode, “Blaze of Glory,” when a missile test is hijacked and sent off course, the team searches for the hacking group responsible for the attack with the help of a young computer specialist Hetty brings in to assist the team. Also, Nell sees the bond between the tech guru and Eric and she becomes jealous. (Maybe we’ll finally learn more about the vacation Eric went on with Nell to her family’s house at Christmas, huh??)

See if the team can find the hacking hijackers tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Scorpion, Food Fortunes, & Castle.

cristela320smallI’m so scared because TV Line has Cristela on their “bubble show” list. I’ve loved this comedy since episode one. Cristela is great, the supporting cast is fantastic, and I love the balance between her work and her home life. Last week’s episode was a good example of that. It was Henry’s confirmation at church, and he picked Cristela to be his sponsor. But when it came time for the confirmation, Cristela was supposed to be working, helping her boss, Mr. Culpepper, at a press conference to show that he wasn’t the racist he seemed to be on a video he’d accidentally been captured on when his daughter, Maddie, was vlogging at work. She almost missed the confirmation but realized at the last minute that family was more important. She ran all the way to the church and made it just in time. At work the next day, Mr. Culpepper said he was disappointed, but really, I think we can all tell he admires her, even though they aren’t necessarily the choices he would make. That’s part of what I love about the show.

On tonight’s episode, “Fifteen-Something,” when Juanita Canales invites the family to her granddaughter’s quinceañera, Natalia wants to show off and use different aspects of the family to impress everybody. This culminates in her pushing Cristela to bring Josh from work as her date, and Cristela has the first dance she never had when she turned fifteen.

To see if Cristela and Josh have the moment all the shippers are hoping for, tune in to ABC at 8:31/7:31c.
