ncisla222smallOn the last new episode of NCIS: LA, the team paired up with Anna, Arkady’s daughter, after she kidnapped Kirkin (whose flirtation with Deeks was once again freakin’ hysterical) in order to learn her father’s whereabouts. Kirkin didn’t know for sure, but he did give them clues in order to find Arkady. It meant they had to go undercover at a gala so they could hack into the Russian Consul General’s computer. Of course, Kensi and Deeks had to go in as staff – catering, to be precise – while Callen and Anna were a couple and Sam went as their guest. It was dicey (Kensi to the rescue with the signal jammer and Anna and Callen had to do some distraction to keep the guards from seeing Sam as he sneaked into the room), but they accomplished their goal of figuring out in which Arkady was being held.

This is a two-part episode, with the conclusion airing tonight. Sam, Callen, and Anna head to Russia, while Kensi and Deeks stay behind. And tonight, we find (along with Callen) out more about Callen’s history, including a huge secret we’ve all been wondering about for seven seasons! I can’t wait!

On tonight’s episode, “Matryoshka, Part 2,” while they’re in Russia, Callen, Sam and Anna (guest star Bar Paly) craft a plan to break Anna’s father and his CIA agent companion out of prison. In Los Angeles, Kensi and Deeks take Eric into the field on an assignment.

See if they can break Arkady out of prison and how Eric does in the field tonight on CBS at 9:59/8:59c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Kids Baking Championship, Superstore, Cake Wars, Ellen’s Design Challenge, Lucifer, Major Crimes, Scorpion, & Castle.

lucifier125smallTonight, FOX kicks off its new crime drama with a devilish twist, Lucifer. Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Eliis, Rush, Merlin) is bored and tired of running things in Hell, so he decides to retire and live on Earth. He now resides in Los Angeles, where he owns an upscale nightclub called Lux. Lucifer has a unique effect on the people he meets – they suddenly want to tell him their deepest desires and darkest secrets.

A murder outside of the nightclub causes Lucifer to cross paths with Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German, Chicago Fire). Chloe recently separated from her ex, Dan (Kevin Alejandro, The Returned), and seems to be the only person impervious to Lucifer’s charms. Lucifer is intrigued by this and decides to use his talents to help her solve cases.

Other folks in Lucifer’s “life” include demon best friend/confidant Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt, The Librarians), angel Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside, Suits), who was sent by God to get Lucifer to return to his post in Hell, and therapist Kim Martin (Rachael Harris, Suits).

I enjoyed tonight’s premiere a lot more than I expected to. From the ads, I thought this was going to be some kind of Old Hollywood noir detective show, but that is certainly not the case. Lucifer is charming, and I like how he is completely honest about who he is – even if folks don’t necessarily believe him. It’s not like it is a secret that they are going to constantly keep trying to hide. While the cop/not-a-cop premise is something we have seen many times on TV, this has a bit of a supernatural twist. I like the chemistry between Lucifer and Chloe, and the show has the right balance of drama and humor.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” Lucifer befriends a troubled pop diva and witnesses her murder, which triggers him to seek revenge on her killer.

Check out the series premiere tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Supergirl, Superstore, Telenovela, The X-Files, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin, and The Magicians.

almostroyal118smallTonight, fake British aristocratic siblings Poppy (Amy Hoggart) and Georgie Carlton (Ed Gamble) are heading back across the pond to continue their tour of America in Almost Royal. This quasi-reality series takes a similar format to comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s many films and TV series, such as Da Ali G Show, Borat, and Bruno, where the actors remain in character the whole time but interact with real people who aren’t in on the joke and get real reactions.

I really enjoyed the first season – these rich, dim-witted, completely out of touch with reality Brits are hilarious to watch. The actors play dumb really well, and I am constantly finding myself laughing at their antics. I’m looking forward to seeing what type of adventures Poppy and Georgie get up to this season!

Tonight’s second season premiere features back-to-back new episodes. First up, in “Beauty,” Poppy and George return to the U.S. to look at the art of beauty and visit a school to learn to perfect blow-drying; judge a competition for beautiful babies; and take part in a beauty pageant. They also run into Mario Lopez. Then in, “The Great Outdoors,” the Carltons explore the outdoors and get up and close with Floridian wildlife; hike a trail with real Americans; and save lives on a popular beach.

Catch the first two episodes of the season on BBC America at 10/9c & 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Supergirl, Superstore, Telenovela, and War & Peace.

scorpion14smallI’m so happy that Scorpion is back from the winter break! It’s been an emotional rollercoaster this season, especially given Megan’s death a few episodes ago, and the winter finale was no exception. Of course the COTW was fun (and slightly unrealistic, although that’s nothing new for the show), but it was the rest of it that made it such a great episode. I loved the helium Christmas karaoke, and for the shippers out there, there were fun moments for Happy/Toby and Paige/Walter. Hopefully we’ll see some movement forward on both those fronts. But the most emotional moment in the episode was Walter’s reaction to the missing Ferret Bueller, when he broke down thinking the rodent was gone, only to have it be truly about losing Megan (and just before he won the big grant!). To fire off the rocket with Megan’s ashes seemed only fitting for this team of oddball geniuses.

On tonight’s episode, “White Out,” in order to save a United States Special Forces unit from certain death, Team Scorpion must brave the subzero temperatures of Antarctica. Also, when Happy becomes cut off from the team and lost in a blizzard, Toby risks his life to find her.

See how Toby and the team can rescue Happy and the SF unit tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Kids Baking Championship, SuperHuman, Supergirl, Superstore, & NCIS: LA.

childhoodsend1214smallTonight, Syfy kicks off its 3-night miniseries event, Childhood’s End, which is an adaption of Arthur C. Clark’s 1953 novel of the same name. Mysterious alien ships belonging to a race known as the Overlords appear in the sky all around the globe. However, the unseen supervisor known as Karellen (Charles Dance, Game of Thrones) promises they are there peacefully and promise to help fix the Earth’s problems. Karellen chooses Missouri farmer Ricky (Mike Vogel, Under the Dome) to be his “Blue Collar Prophet” and bridge between humans and the Overlords. The Overlords waste no time turning the Earth into the utopia they promised – achieving world peace, ending hunger, curing disease, etc. But is all of this too good to be true? Some freedom fighters believe so and don’t trust Karellen – especially since he won’t reveal himself to them.

The original novel was broken into three parts, with a time jump in between each one. Syfy is following the same structure with this series. Each night can be thought of as a 2-hour film in an overall saga. I had never read the original novel but have seen the entire series, and I would say expect the unexpected. The series has some really shocking and creepy moments (usually in the closing moments of each episode) and also brings up some thought-provoking topics.

The series also stars Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black), Daisy Betts (Persons Unknown), Ashley Zuckerman (Manhattan), Osy Ikhile (The Fear), Charlotte Nicdao (Please Like Me), and Haley Magnus (Home and Away).

I had the opportunity to speak with some of the cast/creators of the miniseries at San Diego Comic-Con. You can find videos of these interviews at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Night One – The Overlords,” an alien presence arrives on Earth with the intention to end all suffering and guide humanity into a utopia. But not everyone is so quick to believe these mysterious visitors are as peaceful as they seem.

Catch the beginning of this 3-part special series tonight on Syfy at 8/7c.
