Friday night is finally here, and I am so excited I could burst! Tonight my television will be tuned into CBS all night for three of my favorite shows: MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0, and Blue Bloods. First up, let’s discuss MacGyver.

Last season we left off with Mac learning that his dad was actually Overwatch and had been in charge of him all along. This didn’t make him overly happy. He was incredibly upset that Maddy had lied to him and that his father had been hiding in plain sight this whole time. After saving the day together, Mac decided he could no longer work for his dad or Maddy because he didn’t trust them. I understand where he’s coming from because how could you just move on after learning that your father had basically been controlling your future your whole life from the shadows? Hopefully Mac will decide to come back to Phoenix, because obviously nothing will be the same without him.

On tonight’s premiere, “Improvise,” three months after quitting the Phoenix Foundation and moving to Nigeria, Mac puts aside his differences with his father and returns when he hears Jack is the target of a murderous dictator he double-crossed.

To see how this homecoming goes, tune in to CBS at 8/7c.

Late last night, Netflix released the complete first season of The Good Cop, starring classical singer-sometimes-actor Josh Groban and former housekeeper (from Who’s the Boss?, duh! LOL) Tony Danza. Danza plays Tony Sr. (Big Tony), a former NYPD officer who is lovable but never really followed the rules while on the job. Groban plays his son, Tony Jr. (TJ), who is also a cop, although he strives to be what his dad was not. He’s a super smart, straight-laced detective who makes a point of always following the rules. Dad annoys son when he starts poking his nose into TJ’s cases, and they become unofficial partners.

Tony Danza plays Tony Sr. (Big Tony), a lovable yet not exactly honorable, former NYPD officer who never followed the rules. He lives with his son, Tony Jr. (TJ), Josh Groban, a brilliant, straight-laced NYPD detective who makes a point of always following the rules while solving Brooklyn’s toughest cases. This “odd couple” become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, street-wise advice. Also joining the cast are Monica Barbaro (Chicago Justice), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire), Frank Whaley (Marvel’s Luke Cage), and Bill Kottkamp.

I haven’t heard much about this show, but the trailer looked pretty amusing. I love Josh Groban as a singer. Haven’t seen him in enough as an actor to figure out if I like him in that respect or not, but paired with Tony Danza, who is always fun to watch, should give him someone/something great to play off of. I can’t wait to sit and binge watch this one!

Early this morning, Netflix released the first 10 episodes of the new animated series Disenchantment. The fantasy series comes from creator Matt Groening (The Simpsons, Futurama) and follows the misadventures of Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson, Broad City), a teenager who hates her depressing life in the medieval kingdom of Dreamland. Her mother passed away when she was a child, and her father, King Zog (John DiMaggio, Futurama), has since remarried. He has arranged for Bean to marry a prince from another kingdom in order to secure a political treaty, but Bean wants none of that. She just wants to drink, party, and do whatever she wants to. As the series opens, a demon named Luci (Eric Andre, Man Seeking Woman) attaches itself to Bean as her personal demon and is constantly encouraging her bad behavior. Meanwhile, an elf named Elfo (Nat Faxon, Married, Ben and Kate) is also feeling out of place in his home. He’s sick of eating candy all day and always being happy. He wants to see what it’s like to feel depressed…and he may soon get his wish when he manages to make his way to Dreamland.

The animation style of Disenchantment looks a lot like that of The Simpsons and Futurama. The series also has the same layered site-gag humor, such as the punny shop names throughout the kingdom. There are also some really fun new characters, with familiar voices – both from the voice cast behind Futurama as well as some from talented British comedians. Where this series differs from Matt Groening’s previous work is the tone and structure. The humor is a bit more adult – Bean is constantly getting drunk or high, there is some pretty graphic (though humorous) violence, and there are quite a few sexual jokes or situations. While some of this may go over the heads of younger viewers, the target audience definitely seems to skew older. Also, unlike The Simpsons and Futurama, this series is highly serialized. While Bean, Elfo, and Luci usually have some kind of misadventure or problem of the week, there is a deeper ongoing story arc and character growth that flows from episode to episode, and there are some mysteries set up early on that will hopefully be explained by the end of the season.

Disenchantment is definitely worth checking out for Matt Groening fans. It feels both fun and familiar but also quite different from his previous shows. At San Diego Comic-Con, I participated in a roundtable discussion with series creator Matt Groening and showrunner Josh Weinstein, so if you want more even more information on the series, check out my write-up/audio at NoReruns.net.

Check out Disenchantment now on Netflix!

I’ll also be watching/recording The Great British Baking Show.

Early this morning, Netflix released all of the episodes of the sixth season of Orange is the New Black. Last season, the series took a unique approach, with the entire season taking place over the course of just 3 days, as the Litchfield inmates rioted for better living conditions after the accidental death of inmate/friend Poussey. After days of trying to negotiate with the prisoners, CERT sent in a tactical team to squelch the uprising. Meanwhile, Red tried to lure former CO Piscatella into a trap to get her revenge. However, he discovered what she was up to and entered the prison on his own, where he held Alex, Piper, Red, and some others hostage. The women eventually managed to turn the tables on Piscatella, but the CERT team found Freida’s hidden bunker just as he was trying to leave, and they shot him, thinking he was an armed assailant in the haze of the smoke bombs they had released.

During the riot, Maritza and Flaca had bonded making their YouTube prison-style videos. However, they were upset to discover that all of the Litchfield inmates were being gathered onto buses to be redistributed to other prisons while the riot aftermath was cleaned up…and the two of them had been placed on different buses. Meanwhile, Leanne and Angie set fire to all of the prisoner records; Lorna discovered she was pregnant, and her boyfriend professed his love; and Pennsatucky managed to escape from prison and made her way to the home of her CO boyfriend. Back in the bunker, Red, Freida, the newly-engaged Piper and Alex, and some other inmates locked arms, bracing themselves for the unknown as the CERT team entered the room with guns locked and loaded.

I’m looking forward to seeing where things open in the new season and how this affects the main characters we have followed for five seasons. Will our group be separated from one another? Is Litchfield no more? Will we jump ahead to after things have been cleaned up from the riots? Or have the women been sent to a new prison/prisons, and if so, how will the environment/character dynamics be different?

Check out the entire sixth season streaming now on Netflix.

I’ll also be watching/recording Welcome to the Family, The Great British Baking Show, Wynonna Earp, Killjoys, and Outcast.

Well, it’s time for another full season installment of the MCU’s Netflix original series, as Luke Cage season two went live last night. With 3 out of 5 of the last MCU Netflix seasons being flops in my book, including season one of this show, I am not expecting a whole lot out of this one. But I’ll watch, and if it’s as bad as Jessica Jones season two was, it’ll only take me 3 months to grind through the pain of watching it.

Chronologically, Luke’s story left off at the end of The Defenders, one of the fun recent seasons which saw Daredevil sacrifice himself to destroy the dragon bones under NYC that the Hand was going to use to enslave millions. Somehow Matt survived that explosion, but Jessica and Luke don’t know that as they catch a drink and agree to keep in touch.

Over in his own first season, the last episode opened with a ridiculous 15-minute boxing match with Cage’s brother, Diamondback. Diamondback is almost a legit super-villain with his powered-up battle suit that allows him to go toe-to-toe with the superhuman Cage. But my suspension of disbelief was dialed to Spinal Tap 11 as Cage at any moment could have simply torn the powerpack off the back of the suit and ended the fight. After seemingly all of Harlem watches the bout, Misty Knight brought Luke to the station for questioning, and a series of lofty soliloquies ensued.

Misty pinned the murder of slain crime lord Cottonmouth on Mariah but found out her key witness had been murdered, so it wouldn’t stick. And poor Luke got sent to jail for old crimes he’d been running from for years. But don’t feel too bad for him. He got out in episode one of The Defenders. Some critics are already calling season two not as good as season one, and I thought S1 of Luke Cage was just an over-glorified hip hop video that happened to have a cool comic book character in it. So like I said, my expectations are low for this one. Oh well, I’m still gonna watch!

Check out all of season two now on Netflix.

I’m also going to be watching 12 Monkeys.
