Tonight, Supergirl returns to The CW to kick off its fifth season. As the fourth season came to close, Supergirl was up against Lex Luthor, who had made himself look like the hero, “saving” the country from an alien attack, and using Red Daughter to try to kill Supergirl. For his heroism, the president had named Lex the new Director of Alien Affairs. However, it turned out that Lex was harnessing the aliens’ powers to create batteries, which he planned to utilize to blow up the planet Argus, along with Superman. It was up to Supergirl to expose Lex’s evil plan, which she did as Kara via a written expose. However, Lex was still moving forward with his plan, and the group gathered to stop him from launching his weapon. Meanwhile, Ben Lockwood also showed up, looking to fight Supergirl. During the commotion, Red Daughter took a blast of Kryptonite while trying to protect Supergirl and was killed. Supergirl reabsorbed her clone, and this extra burst of power allowed her to blast Lex and his Lexosuit, sending him hurdling toward Earth. He managed to create a portal into his lap before he exploded into the Earth. However, Lena showed up and shot Lex. As he lay dying, Lex revealed Kara’s big secret to Lena, who was shocked and felt betrayed. In the final moments of the episode, The Monitor arrived through a portal, greeting a Green Martian, who was plotting revenge on his brother, J’onn J’onzz. We then saw The Monitor hovering over Lex’s cold body… It looks like this will not be the end for Lex!

So how will learning Kara’s secret change Lena? Will she turn to the dark side with her brother? Will she plot some kind of revenge against Supergirl? When will she tell Kara that she knows? What new villains and threats await Supergirl and her DEO/superhero crew this season?

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I got the chance to talk about the series with some of the executive producers and cast members. You can watch my interview videos from the press room at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Event Horizon,” Kara is surprised to find that CatCo has a new owner who has brought in a star reporter; new couples emerge and explore their budding relationships; J’onn J’onzz receives an unexpected visitor.

Find out who now owns CatCo and who visits J’onn J’onzz tonight on The CW at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Rookie, The Simpsons, Bless the Harts, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Batwoman, The Walking Dead, Mr. Robot, and Succession.

The last two nights on The Flash and then Arrow, the Arrowverse continuum put out the first two thirds of Elseworlds, which is proving to be a phenomenal crossover trilogy. The annual tradition was pared down this season to feature three main stars rather than a huge ensemble, bringing us to tonight’s conclusion on Supergirl, airing on a special night. Right out of the gate, it was great spin on a mash-up with Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) & Barry Allen (Flash) having somehow been switched in the timeline. Like they had each other’s powers and identities and no one could tell. So they went to Earth-38 to see Kara Danvers, the Girl of Steel, hoping the adjustment to reality was limited to their version of Earth. That turned out to be the case, and Kara was very happy to see them. She happened to be at her family farm when they arrived, so “freaky Friday” Oliver & Barry also got to meet Clark Kent and Lois Lane, who were visiting.

This led to an epic Justice League level of a team up with Superman, Supergirl, The Flash, and Green Arrow squaring off vs a power-absorbing robot named AMAZO. Yes the name sucks, but the episode was great. In the end of that one, Vibes and Killer Frost were very important players, but a clutch shot by Barry (as Green Arrow) stopped the creature. Superman headed back to Earth-38, while the trio of friends moved on to Gotham to follow up a lead on the anomalous energy they had detected that they now associated with the strange mutations in the timelines.

Team Flash was aware of someone trying to come through the Time Force from somewhere/some”when” else, but there was something blocking the traveler. In Gotham, Kara, Oliver, and Barry got themselves into trouble and even got arrested. A woman named Kate Kane bailed them out and called them to Wayne Tower for a meeting. It turned out she was Bruce Wayne’s cousin and wanted to make sure they didn’t cause too much trouble while they were there. Vibes had visions of the Monitor, an interdimensional villain that wielded the power to change reality with a giant metaphysical tome. A vision of the Flash from another timeline came through to give a broken message that suggested they could win if they got “the book” – Monitor’s huge tome. They Vibe that Dr John Deegan in Arhkam Asylum has the book, and so they went there at night.

When Deegan learned he was being attacked, he unlocked all the patients and inmates in Arkham and a free-for-all began. Supergirl versus the crazies is one thing, but thanks to a hallucinogenic drug getting released, we got treated to a great Oliver vs. Barry fight too! Plus, as if this crossover wasn’t that rad already, enter Batwoman, who needed to clean up after the mess these guys were making in her town. We can confirm now that yes, she’s Batman’s cousin, and yes she’s getting her own show!

After the heroes got the book, the Monitor showed up to congratulate them on getting that far. He then returned the book to Deegan and made him reinvent the timeline more creatively a second time. This left Oliver & Barry in a world in which they were villains on the run known as the Trigger Twins. Superman showed up to stop them at the very last minute, which I imagine sets up the action for tonight. Whooo-eeeeeee. Strap in for round three of an exhilarating crossover trilogy that reminds us that these are comic books brought to life!!

On tonight’s episode, “Elseworlds, Part 3,” Supergirl, The Flash, Green Arrow, and Superman (guest star Tyler Hoechlin) engage in the battle of their lives.

To see how the battle ends, tune in to The CW at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching Adam Ruins Everything and Black Lightning.

Tonight, Supergirl returns to the CW. In the last episode, Supergirl and the DEO captured a second Worldkiller, Purity. As Alex and Kara interrogated her, hoping to get some info on how to defeat Reign, Purity used her sonic scream to escape from her cell and get away. Meanwhile, J’onn, Winn, and Mon-El teamed up to fix the Legion ship. During one of their conversations, Mon-El revealed that he only married Imra in order to unite Titan and Earth, not out of love.

Later, Purity and Reign teamed up to attack the subway, but our heroes managed to fend them off. As the Worldkillers were leaving, they promised that Pestilence would soon join their team and that then they would be unstoppable. After things settled down, Mon-El told Imra the truth about their marriage and that he may still have feelings for Kara. Imra responded with the news that she, too, was hiding something — the true purpose of their mission (though we never get to hear what this is). As the episode ended, Sam’s eyes once again flashed red, this time in front of Lena, who announced afterwards that she knew what was wrong with Sam.

Will the group be able to stop Worldkillers before it’s too late? What does Lena think she knows about Sam and the reasons for her blackouts? What is Mon-El and Imra’s true mission on Earth? Will Mon-El confess to Kara that he still has feelings for her? And what other dangers await our heroes in this final stretch of the season?

On tonight’s episode, “Schott Through the Heart,” when Winn’s father dies, his estranged mother tries to reconnect and explain why she abandoned him; a copycat Toyman attacks, and the two must work together to stop him; Mon-El tells Kara something important about the Worldkillers.

See how Kara reacts to Mon-El’s information tonight on The CW at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Crossing, Good Girls, The Resident, iZombie, The Terror, UnREAL, and Final Space.

Arrowverse “Crisis on Earth-X” Crossover Recap

Okay, last week was another amazing November sweeps crossover extravaganza in the Arrowverse, and this year’s “Crisis on Earth-X” was totally worth the hype! Starting slow on Supergirl, the story initially followed all the pre-wedding preparations. It was an episode that went heavy on the soundtrack, a theme that peaked in Kara singing a beautiful song, that I think(?) was an original tune, at Flash & Iris’s wedding. Until – of course – the alternate dimension Nazi Super Villain Army burst in. For real. It was rad. It was what we signed up for. And this round the good guys won.

The second episode in the series was on Arrow, which revealed some key plot points to us but didn’t end great per se for the good guys. We learned that the army of genetic purists from Earth-X were led by that dimension’s version of Oliver “Green Arrow” Queen & Kara “Supergirl” Danver, who were also in evil-love and unhappily married. Unhappy why? Cause of a super-cancer that was destroying her heart. So they needed Earth-3 Kara’s heart. A veritable War of the Worlds erupted, and by the end of this one, everybody but Iris & Felicity were in an Earth-X concentration camp.

Next up in The Flash, they got rescued from certain death by that Nazi boot stomp dimension’s version of Captain Cold. And as if him being a good guy wasn’t surprising enough, he was also there to rescue his gay lover and fellow fascist fighting superhero, The Ray. But Kara was still held by the evil version of Oliver and would soon go under the knife. Professor Stein took a bullet (that would eventually kill him), saving the day in this chapter, and at the end, tables were slightly turned with only Kara, Iris, & Felicity being captured. But everyone else didn’t have it easy – they were fighting the Red Tornado, who was summarily kicking their collective asses.

I’m thoroughly enjoying this season of Man With a Plan. Last week was especially funny because Adam learned that he and Andi weren’t legally married. The man who’d married them years before showed up on their doorstep, wanting to make amends – turned out he had some issues and had forgotten to renew his license back then. Of course, it was also Adam’s fault… He’d hired this guy instead of the man Andi told him to hire since her pick was so much more expensive. He was going to tell her, but then they got into a discussion about how he cheaped out on everything from napkins to the single-use coffee pods, and he decided to keep it to himself. He convinced her to do a “vow renewal,” but the guy showed up again, needing to make amends to Andi as well, and the truth came to light. In the end, it turned out to be a simple trip to the courthouse off screen, and then we got to see how their “second wedding night” went…with all three kids in bed with them. It was a sweet moment.

On tonight’s episode, “The Parents Strike Back,” when the kids won’t do their chores, Adam and Andi decide to go on strike too.

To see what happens when the house falls apart one pile of stuff at a time, tune in to CBS at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Holiday Baking Championship, Superior Donuts, 9JKL, Christmas Cookie Challenge, & Scorpion.
