houdinidoyle52smallTonight, FOX kicks off the new series Houdini & Doyle, a British/Canadian/American co-production inspired by the real-life friendship between illusionist Harry Houdini and author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The series takes place in 1900, where friends Harry Houdini (Michael Weston, House, Six Feet Under) and Dr. Arthur Conan Doyle (Stephen Mangan, Episodes) find themselves teaming up with Scotland Yard to help solve inexplicable crimes and supernatural-based cases. The pair has a bit of a Mulder/Scully type of dynamic – while Doyle is much more open to the supernatural and spiritual, Houdini is a skeptic who believes everything can be explained in the same manner as his illusions. This causes the pair to constantly butt heads on their cases and wager as to the outcome. Joining these amateur detectives on their cases is fresh-faced female police officer Constable Adelaide Stratton (Rebecca Liddiard).

The series comes from producers David Shore (House) and David N. Titcher (The Librarians), and their influence can easily be seen. It combines interesting case-of-the-week type procedural elements with the humorous banter and interactions between the main characters. If you’re looking for a light, fun supernatural drama to add to your schedule, this one is definitely worth checking out. I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere and look forward to seeing what adventures Houdini and Doyle get involved in over the course of the show’s short 10-episode first season.

On tonight’s premiere, “The Maggie’s Redress,” the two investigate the murder of a nun who was killed in the infamous Magdalene Laundries.

Meet the new Houdini and Doyle tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Castle, Blindspot, Gotham, Jane the Virgin, The Detour, Bates Motel, 12 Monkeys, TURN: Washington’s Spies, and The Odd Couple.

ncisla52smallMy pick tonight is the season finale of NCIS: LA. Last week, a fireman died in a supposedly locked “vault” (of sorts) inside a warehouse, and it was determined that it was a storage container for the Department of Defense. Sam and Callen went undercover as firemen to help determine if someone from his firehouse set the blaze and killed the guy. Fortunately, it wasn’t one of them, but it was a man who had tried to become a fireman and been turned down. He was working with the arson inspector, and they had set the blaze (which accidentally killed the fireman) so they could steal a list of names the DOD had on one of the hard drives in the container. That list contained people with ties to terrorist groups. Unfortunately, it was a very broad list, so there were innocent people on there – unfortunate people with the same name as a bad guy, someone who donated innocently to a charity that they didn’t know had ties to the terrorist organizations, etc. The arson inspector was planning to kill one of the men from the list and release the list to the public in the hopes that the people would do the same, unless police started arresting all the people on the list. Fortunately, the team got the partner to give up his location and they were able to stop him in time.

This has been a great season for the show, especially in terms of character development. Not only have Kensi and Deeks shown a fantastic growth in their relationship, going so far as to move in together and even begin to talk weddings and babies, but the seven-season mystery of Callen’s first name was finally solved (Grisha Alexandrovich Nikolaev/Callen) AND he finally met his father! Plus we’ve seen lots of stories for Sam and his family, including the episode tonight. My only wish is that we’d seen more Nell and Eric. I *think* they’re together, but are they really? We don’t have definitive proof like Kensi and Deeks, obviously, but maybe that’ll come next season. I also would’ve loved to have seen Deeks formally join NCIS, instead of being a liaison, but…I guess we’ll see another time if it ever happens!

On tonight’s episode, “Talion,” when Sam receives a distress code from his son Aiden (Tye White) that his school has been taken over by an extremist group, Sam, Callen, Kensi, and Deeks rush to San Francisco to protect Aiden and free the hostages.

See if the team can rescue Aiden and the other hostages tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Cupcake Wars, Mike & Molly, & Blindspot.

blindspot52smallBlindspot has been picking up speed the last couple of weeks, and I have been loving it. Jane is getting closer to Weller, but she’s sleeping with her ex-fiancé, who is her handler for the secret mission she’s on. I’m not sure exactly where it’s going to go, but I think that Jane and Weller need to be together and she needs to be honest about the insanity she’s involved with, because it’s not going to go well with anyone.

On tonight’s episode, “Swift Hardhearted Stone,” when a mysterious young girl with a tattoo connection falls into Borden’s care, he brings her case to the FBI team, but her ties to a terrorist organization prove dangerous for all of them. Meanwhile, a conflicted Jane starts to grow close to Weller again, and friendship blossoms between Borden and Patterson.

To find out if Jane can figure out who to side with, tune in to NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching The Voice, Houdini & Doyle, and NCIS: LA.
