playinghouse811smallI had forgotten how much I had missed USA Network’s comedy, Playing House, until I watched last week’s season premiere. The second season picked up about 4 months after the first. Emma and “Bird Bones” finally made their peace, so Mark no longer had to visit Emma and baby Charlotte in secret. After Maggie admitted to having a sex dream with the “Property Brothers” (which was hilarious to watch), Emma decided she was ready to get back into the dating world and set her up with a Tinder profile. After some disastrous rapid-fire dates, Maggie finally met nice guy Dan (Kyle Bornheimer), and the two really hit it off.

Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair have such great chemistry together, and the longtime friendship between these actresses really shows in the series. It’s tough to tell what is ad-libbed and what is scripted because all of the fun dialogue and banter feels so natural. This show always keep me smiling from start to finish — it’s a shame that the season is just 8 episodes long!

USA Network is making the following week’s episode available On Demand after each new episode airs, so you can already find tonight’s episode there if you want to watch it early. I couldn’t wait! 🙂

On tonight’s episode, “Cashmere Burka,” Maggie agrees to direct a play written by Gwen; and Emma gets hot and heavy with a new flame.

To see how Emma and her new guy hit it off, tune in to USA Network at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Zoo, Hollywood Game Night, Tyrant, Clipped, Face Off, Scream, and Another Period.

significantmothersmallLast week, The CW kicked off its new scripted comedy Significant Mother. In the premiere, Nate (Josh Zuckerman, 90210) came home from a business trip to discover that his roommate/best friend Jimmy (Nathaniel Buzolic, The Vampire Diaries) is hooking up with his mother Lydia (Krista Allen, Days of Our Lives). The premiere mainly consisted of Jimmy freaking out, which was humorous but gave no indication as to what the weekly show is going to be like. (Though, if it’s just Jimmy freaking out all the time, I could live with that.)

I really liked that cast, and the premise seems like it could be a lot of fun — my only concern is that The CW doesn’t really have a great track record with these half-hour sitcoms. They seem to pull/cancel them rather quickly. I’m not sure why The CW keeps trying to get into the half-hour comedy business, but I hope this one actually sticks around.

On tonight’s episode, “Mixed Doubles,” Lydia and Jimmy plan a date in public to rebuff Nate’s contention that they’re not serious about their relationship. Nate, meanwhile, goes on a date with an older woman he meets at a restaurant; and Atticus prepares for a perfect evening with Sam.

To see how Lydia & Jimmy’s date goes, tune in to The CW at 9:30/8:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Running Wild with Bear Grylls, Chasing Life, Becoming Us, Major Crimes, Murder in the First, Devious Maids, and Teen Wolf.

sex&drugs716smallTonight is the premiere of the hilarious new FX comedy, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. Johnny Rock (Denis Leary, Rescue Me) is an aging 90s rocker whose legendary band, The Heathens, was just about to release its first album when lead guitarist Flash (John Corbett, Northern Exposure) found Johnny in bed with his wife. The band, which also consisted of drummer Bam Bam (Robert Kelly, Louie) and bassist Rehab (John Ales, You Wish), quickly fell apart afterwards. Now it’s 25 years later, and Johnny is still a broke, never-was rocker trying to make a name for himself. Johnny’s wife Ava (Elaine Hendrix, Anger Management) continues to stick by him, but manager Ira (Josh Pais, Law & Order: SVU) is running out of ideas. That is, until talented young ingenue Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies, Victorius) shows up, looking for Johnny’s help.

I’ve seen the first four episodes of the series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. That cast has great chemistry — you really feel like they’ve known one another for 25 years. The show is so much fun, with many hilarious laugh-out-loud moments and some amazing musical performances. Who knew Denis Leary was a musician/singer?! What I really enjoy about this show is the serialized nature of the episodes. The series feels very much like one long film, and each episode is just one small chapter chronicling the adventure of this band. I’m excited to see how the season-long arc plays out while also laughing at the band’s crazy antics each week!

The cast was at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend to talk about the show, and I’ve posted videos from the press room at NoReruns.net (http://www.noreruns.net/2015/07/15/sexdrugsrockroll-press-room-san-diego-comic-con-2015/).

On tonight’s episode, “Don’t Wanna Die Anonymous,” an Afghan Whigs reunion inspires Johnny to see if he can get the band back together in the premiere of this comedy about an aging and broke bad-boy rocker from the 1990s who gets another shot at fame 25 years later as a songwriter for a brash and talented young singer who’s a big fan of his earlier work.

See the start of this new comedy tonight on FX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Under the Dome, Rookie Blue, Wayward Pines, Married, Complications, Dominion, Geeks Who Drink, and Reactor.

lacheysbarsmallI’m a big fan of brothers Nick and Drew Lachey. I’ve been a fan of Nick’s for a while, and Drew was my favorite on his season of Dancing with the Stars. So when I learned that they were starring in a new docu-reality show, I knew I was there. The show follows Nick and Drew as they fulfill a lifelong dream of opening a bar in their hometown of Cincinnati. Together, they’ll get involved with everything, from the ground up, including learning about running a business. Drew and his wife Lea live in Cincinnati full time with their kids, while Nick and his wife Vanessa split their time between Cincinnati and LA and, at the time of filming, were about to welcome a new baby into their family. (Since then, they’ve had a baby girl.) So the show should be a lot of fun!

On tonight’s episode, “A Bar is Born!,” Nick returns to Cincinnati, where he and Drew are opening a bar together. They must quickly make several key decisions about the bar and decide to embark on a pub crawl as a means of research.

See the brothers on their home turf tonight on A&E at 10:30/9:30c.

zoo714smallCBS’s new “when animals attack” drama, Zoo, has wasted no time getting to the action, suspense, and animal craziness. Last week, we saw that the animal phenomenon is not limited to cats and that the animals are actually premeditating and planning out their murderous acts. In Africa, Jackson and Captain Kavimba found Abraham’s body in the tree and discovered that the lions had not fatally wounded him — they were sending a message to the humans. And back in LA, Jamie and Mitch operated on a lion and discovered that a chemical in the animals may be allowing them to communicate with one another. Meanwhile, in Slovenia, a man was lured into an alley by the family dog, only to be surrounded by a bunch of the dog’s vicious pals, who tore the man apart. The dog then went back to the man’s hotel room, knocked on the door, and pretended like nothing happened when the man’s wife let him in.

What is causing the animals to rise up against the humans, and does their dangerous form of communication extend across species? Can these people find a way to stop the animals before they wipe out the entire human population? I really enjoyed the original James Patterson novel, but this series is completely different and only similar in the general concept — the characters and reasons for the dangerous animal behavior have all been changed. So it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

This past weekend, I got a chance to talk with the executive producers of the series, as well as two of the stars, in the CBS press room at the San Diego Comic-Con. You can find these interviews at NoReruns.net. (I had to ask them if that dog was really supposed to have knocked on the hotel room door!)

On tonight’s episode, “The Silence of the Cicadas,” Jackson flies to Japan with Abraham to recover the rest of his father’s research involving animals; Jamie convinces Mitch to join her when she shows a Louisiana senator their findings on the abnormal behavior of the zoo lions; a shadowy intelligence agent recruits Chloe in Paris; and a death-row inmate escapes from a Mississippi prison during a vicious wolf invasion.

Learn more about why the animals are attacking tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Hollywood Game Night, Tyrant, Clipped, Chrisley Knows Best, Royal Pains, Scream, and Another Period.
