My pick tonight is ABC’s latest drama, The Rookie, starring Castle vet, Nathan Fillion, who plays John Nolan, a small-town guy who pursues his dream of being an LAPD officer after an incident one day changes the way he looks at his life. He’s the force’s oldest rookie, so many of the higher-ups feel like he’s just a “walking midlife crisis,” and some are even really hard on him, since if he can’t keep up, he’ll not only be a danger to himself but to the public and other officers out there with him.

I was a big Castle (& Nathan Fillion) fan and was sad when it ended, even though the last few seasons weren’t as great as the beginning. I’m an even bigger fan of cop shows, so combine Nathan, cop shows, and a few producers from some of my all-time favorite shows like Criminal Minds & Human Target, and you know I’m going to look forward to it. When I got a chance to watch the pilot, I was both scared and excited – excited, because, duh…and scared because I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. But it did, even more than I’d hoped. There’s some serious story lines, but there’s also that Fillion charm and some laughs and romance as well, so I have my fingers crossed that it’ll be as popular with others as I think it should be.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” after a life-altering incident, John Nolan decides to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer; as the force’s oldest rookie, John is met with skepticism from some higher-ups.

Find out why John decides to join the police department tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Conners, The Little Couple, NCIS, The Kids Are Alright, Chopped, FBI, Lethal Weapon, NCIS: New Orleans, & Sweet Home Sextuplets.

If you were a big fan of the original Charmed like I was, you’re either really excited about or really dreading tonight’s premiere of the “reboot” or whatever they’re calling it. It’s a little confusing because it’s not the same characters, but it is the same premise, yet one trailer does mention one of the characters from the original…so who knows!

Sisters Mel (Melonie Diaz, Laughs Unlimited) and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery, Shades of Blue) are dealing with the tragic death of their mother when they suddenly learn they have an older sister named Macy (Madeleine Mantock, Into the Badlands, The Tomorrow People). Then comes an even bigger shock: they find out they’re witches and each suddenly exhibit impossible new abilities. They speak to Harry Greenwood (Rupert Evans, Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond, The Man in the High Castle), who explains about their mother and now the three of them being powerful witches and that he’s their “Whitelighter,” or advisor/guide. Together, the three of them must decide to accept their new destiny as the Charmed Ones and their new duty to hunt down the demons that walk among humans – including the one who killed their mother. Charlie Gillespie, Ellen Tamaki, and Ser’Darius Blain also star.

I can’t go into this show prepared to compare it to the original. That version (along with Prue, Piper, Phoebe, & Paige, not to mention Leo, Chris, & Darryl) will always hold a special place in my heart. So I have to watch and think of it as something new or else I know I won’t return for a second ep. What about you? Are you planning to watch?

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” after the tragic death of Mel and Maggie’s mother, the sisters are shocked to discover they have an older sister; the three sisters begin to exhibit strange new abilities.

Find out what abilities the sisters have tonight on The CW at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Halloween Wars, NCIS: LA, & Haunted Gingerbread Showdown.

Tonight, Riverdale returns to The CW to kick off the show’s third season. A lot happened last season, especially with the expanded 22-episode season! Betty discovered that her father was the real Black Hood – a serial killer that had been terrorizing the town – though there had also been a second copycat who had been hired by Hiram Lodge. Fred ran for mayor, and even though he had Veronica’s help to try to beat her mother, Hermione ultimately won the election. Meanwhile, Archie was in a political race of his own – he ran for student body president and won. Meanwhile, Veronica discovered his father’s plans to own the entire south side of town, and so she purchased the Whyte Wyrn before he had a chance to do so. She then traded the bar to her father in exchange for Pop’s Diner. Archie had had enough of Hiram and confronted him in his home at knife point, calling him out on all the people he had had a hand in murdering. However, it was all empty threats with Archie – he had no proof and didn’t even think to wear a wire to the confrontation. The next day at school, Jughead asked Betty to join the Serpents, proving that what her father had done hadn’t affected their relationship. Then, Archie was sworn in as class president, but before he could do anything, he was arrested for murder – Hiram had set him up!

I’m looking forward to seeing what happens this season. Will the teens once again find themselves embroiled in another murder mystery? Or else what other kind of evil or misfortune will befall the town of Riverdale this year? And what about Archie – how quickly will he be able to prove his innocence and get out of prison? Will he try to get revenge on Hiram afterwards? It should be another exciting season with lots of soapy twists and turns.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I had the chance to speak with some of the cast about the upcoming season. You can check out my press room videos at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Labor Day,” Archie makes a surprising request about how he wants to spend his final days of summer; Betty must deal with her problems head-on after a heated confrontation with Alice and Polly; Veronica pleads with Hiram to help Archie.

See if Archie gets the help he needs tonight on The CW at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, American Housewife, Modern Family, Single Parents, A Million Little Things, Survivor, All American, and American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

This afternoon at 1:45pm ET, BBC America joins other stations around the globe to air a world-wide simulcast of the series 11 premiere of Doctor Who. The new season is a complete reboot for the series, with all new characters, companions, aliens, villains, adventures, and likely TARDIS, plus a whole new team both in front of and behind the cameras. Taking over as showrunner is Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch), and cast as the first female Doctor is Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch). With each new regeneration, the Doctor gains a new personality and new quirks, so it will be interesting to see what the Thirteenth Doctor will be like. She will also be joined by a new set of companions (though that term will no longer be used in the series) – Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh, Law & Order: UK), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole, Hollyoaks), and Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill, The Good Karma Hospital).

I’m curious to check out this latest season, especially since I was one of those who was very much against casting a female Doctor. I hope Jodie proves me wrong and that I find a new favorite doctor in Thirteen – David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor is still my favorite. Over the past few years, I found the series to be in a bit of a decline, despite having some great episodes with each Doctor. I’m hoping some new blood behind the camera can help to revitalize this iconic series, though I’m a bit disappointed that the showrunner has decided to make a complete break from the past, treating this latest season like the start of a completely new series. I’m also curious to meet the new companions. I think the show works quite well with several companions instead of just one – Amy and Rory were my favorite pair since Doctor Who returned to the air, and I’m hoping we get a fun dynamic between the Doctor and this new trio.

On today’s premiere, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” a mysterious woman who can’t even remember her own name falls from the sky.

Before today’s world-wide premiere, BBC America will be airing an Ultimate Watch Party pre-show at 1:15pm ET, which will also continue after the episode. Tonight’s special encore of the premiere at 8pm ET/PT (the show’s regular timeslot) will include bonus interviews with Jodie Whittaker and footage from New York Comic Con. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I attended the press conference for the series. You can find my video from the event at NoReruns.net.

Don’t miss the latest season premiere today at 1:45/12:45c.

I’ll also be watching/recording God Friended Me, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, The Walking Dead, Star Wars Resistance, and Kidding.

Last week was the exciting season premiere of Blue Bloods, but it seemed like there was conflict all over the place within the family. Not only were Jamie and Frank still at odds about Jamie and Eddie choosing to continue to ride together after getting engaged, but Erin got a promotion at work (taking over Monica’s position after Monica was killed last season), and she was very hesitant about showing any sort of favoritism toward Danny and Jamie when they came to her for help. Then of course there was drug cartel member Louis Delgado (played by one of my favorites, Lou Diamond Phillips), who we know was responsible for burning down Danny’s house – and maybe, just maybe, for somehow causing Linda’s helicopter to crash?! Danny was so gung-ho about taking Delgado down after working a case where the victim’s head was cut off that he basically set the guy up to be killed himself by making it seem like Delgado was in bed with the cops. Ouch.

I was glad to see things calm down a little between Jamie and Frank at the end. Both Jamie and Frank had to realize that Frank was so against it because he just wants his kids to be safe. He’s already lost one son on the job. The thought that Jamie partnering with Eddie now that they’re engaged could make him a little distracted and could get him killed really had Frank worried. In the end, though, Eddie talked to Jamie about not being partners because they were now partners off the job, and she didn’t want it to come between him and his dad. And really, it’s all moot now anyway because we finally found out the results of the sergeant’s exam, and while Jamie said Eddie did fine, it was Jamie himself who got the top spot in the results! He did end up taking it without telling Frank (or us), and now we’re going to have Sergeant Jamie Reagan. That should be fun… It’ll be interesting to see how they’ll work the Jamie/Eddie scenes in now that they won’t be riding together!

On tonight’s episode, “Meet the New Boss,” Gormley looks to Danny and Baez for help tracking down a former NYPD detective he believes may be a threat to Frank’s safety. Also, Erin navigates office politics when she chooses to reopen a closed case; Jamie and Eddie are transferred to a new precinct with a lot of problems; and Frank and Baker team up to investigate a complaint about an SVU detective. Bebe Neuwirth guest stars.

See how they keep Frank safe tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Last Man Standing, MacGyver, The Cool Kids, Child Support, Hawaii Five-0, & Hell’s Kitchen.
