Last week was the 9-1-1 season premiere we should have gotten. Granted, it would have had to run long because they had to set it up, which is why we got the premiere we did, but boy, did the action they promised us deliver. At the end of the premiere, Buck was at the pier with little Christopher, when he realized the water had all been sucked out to sea and was rushing back to land, forming a tsunami, thus bringing us to last week’s episode. While Buck was having fun at the pier with Christopher, Athena and her daughter, May, were spending time together getting manis and pedis. Because there was so much action, there’s not enough time her to do a full recap. But Buck proved how much he’s grown and how quick-thinking he is by trying to save as many people as he could, piling them all up on top of the firetruck (having been driven by the fire crew stuck now on the Ferris wheel). Unfortunately, when he was trying to rescue a few more who were floating (sort of…) by, Christopher yet again went into the water, ending the episode. Elsewhere, Athena and May got caught up in a huge traffic pileup after the tsunami caused some issues with the power lines and traffic lights. They were okay, but a woman was pretty badly injured, and May was left to handle it on her own when a downed power line cut her off from her mom, who finally was able to get rescue crews and a power guy to the location to turn off the power and rescue the woman.

Possibly the saddest, most moving story line of them all, though, was Maddie, who was on the phone with a young man trapped in his attic, with the water rising. Unfortunately, no matter what they tried, the young man drowned while on the phone with her. It was so sad, and Maddie broke down. But then her supervisor asks her to help triage – not the callers but the 9-1-1 personnel themselves, since more would be handling calls like Maddie herself had. Horrifying for all those involved, and it really makes you think of that end of things when tragedies hit.

Meanwhile, the rest of our gang was out on boats to help find & rescue people, not knowing that Buck and Christopher were in horrible danger…which leads us to tonight’s episode. They obviously can’t kill off the kid. This isn’t Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead here. LOL But that doesn’t mean we won’t get a lot of drama on tonight’s conclusion!!

On tonight’s episode, “The Searchers,” Athena, Maddie, Bobby and the 118 races to save lives after a massive tsunami hits the Santa Monica Pier and Buck fears the worst when Christopher goes missing. Rhonda Rousey guest stars.

See if Buck can find Christopher in time tonight on FOX at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching Bob Hearts Abishola, All Rise, Halloween Baking Championship, Prodigal Son, & Halloween Cake-Off.

Last week, FOX’s 9-1-1 kicked off its third season and left viewers with a big cliffhanger. In last week’s premiere, Buck has recovered from last season’s near-fatal accident and was anxious to return to work. He had been cleared to go back to work but suffered a pulmonary embolism at a party that Bobby and Athena had thrown for him to celebrate his passing of the LAFD re-entrance exam. After this, Bobby informed Buck that he was going to be relegated to desk duty. All Buck has ever wanted to do is be a firefighter, and now he’s wondering what he’s going to do with his life. Meanwhile, Eddie asked Buck to babysit Christopher while he was at work, so Buck took him to the boardwalk. But as the episode ended, they were out on the pier and a huge tsunami was about to come crashing ashore. Everyone started running and panicking, but it seemed unlikely that they were going to be able to completely outrun the wall of water and destruction coming their way.

I can always count on this show for big, over-the-top craziness. Last week we had a teen stuck in a speeding, out-of-control sports car and a missing woman whose baby was stolen from her womb. And you don’t really get bigger than a tsunami, so I am looking forward to seeing the continuation of that in tonight’s episode!

On tonight’s episode, “Sink or Swim,” a massive tsunami hits the Santa Monica Pier, jeopardizing the lives of both Buck and Christopher.

Get swept away by the scary excitement tonight on FOX at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Good Doctor, Bob Hearts Abishola, All Rise, Bluff City Law, and Prodigal Son.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/23/19

Welcome back, fall TV! We’ve sure missed you around here! Because there’s so much on this week, we have multiple picks almost every night. Mostly we’ll feature some new shows, but some returning faves may or may not make the list as well. So check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice #1

My first pick tonight is the new drama on CBS, All Rise, although I’d coin it almost a dramedy, rather than a straight drama. I’ve seen the first couple of episodes, and there’s a lot to laugh about in addition to the courtroom drama action. The show stars Simone Missick (Misty Knight on Marvel’s Luke Cage & Marvel’s The Defenders) as Lola Carmichael, former deputy district attorney turned newly appointed judge. Despite what her new judicial assistant Sherri (Ruthie Ann Miles, probably most famous for her roles on Broadway, but she was also in a few episodes of The Americans as well) advises her, Lola is determined to push the boundaries and challenge the expectations of what a judge can be. Unlike the older, stuffier judges who push cases through in rapid fire, Lola is determined to give each case her all, no matter how backed up her case files are. It’s that caring concern mixed with the humor she brings that makes her fun to watch.

Also starring are Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie) as Mark Callan, a deputy district attorney who has been best friends with Lola since college; Marg Helgenberger (CSI) as Supervisory Judge Lisa Benner, an influential, powerful woman tasked with overseeing Lola’s transition into her new job; Jessica Camacho (Taken, The Flash, Sleepy Hollow) as Emily Lopez, a young, empathetic public defender; J. Alex Brinson (Travelers) as Luke Watkins, a court bailiff by day, law student by night who takes a liking to Emily; and Lindsay Mendez (best known for her roles on Broadway) as Sara Castillo, a court reporter and reliable source of intel and advice.

I really loved this pilot. It’s funny, but it’s got heart too, and I can’t wait to see more.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” newly appointed Judge Lola Carmichael works to get justice for people amidst a flawed legal process.

Meet Lola, Mark, and the others tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

Tonight, the second season of FOX’s first-responder drama 9-1-1 comes to a close. In last week’s episode, Chimney took over as interim captain while Bobby remained suspended from the LAFD, and his first call was to help save a man from drowning in a vat of chocolate. Meanwhile, Maddie decided she wanted to quit her job as a 911 operator, believing that she wasn’t really helping anyone. However, her boss arranged for a surprise visit from many of the would-be victims she helped to save, in hopes of changing her mind.

Over the past few episodes, Eddie’s wife Shannon had returned to bond with their son Christopher. However, in this episode, she realized she was still not ready to be a mother to her son and suggested that she and Eddie get a divorce. However, she later turned up in a major accident and died on the scene. As the episode ended, the team had just recently been sent on a call for a mail bomb, when Bobby and Athena saw a TV news report of a second mail bomb. With a serial bomber on the loose, should we be worried about losing one of our favorite characters in tonight’s finale?!

I really enjoy the fast-paced nature of this show, and the calls the team responds to are always out of the ordinary and sometimes somewhat amusing. The series also does an excellent job mixing in character-centric episodes to give us back stories on the main characters and help us to understand their motivations and get to know their personal lives. The series has already been picked up for a third season, and FOX just announced a spin-off starring Robe Lowe, 9-1-1: Lone Star, so there’s plenty more to come!

On tonight’s finale, “This Life We Choose,” a stunt driver is caught in a hairy situation; a teenage social influencer is bugging out; the city is on high alert after two mail bombs go off; Eddie’s family comes to town; Buck faces a life-or-death situation.

To see if anyone’s life is in danger at the end of the season tonight on FOX at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Fix, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, and Chernobyl.

There hasn’t been an episode of 9-1-1 since the show’s premiere that I haven’t been moved to tears by the emotional moments the writers paint for us. On the last episode, we watched as Maddy fought for her life against her abusive ex-husband, Doug, and she refused to let him win this time. She fought so incredibly hard, and in the end she killed him…and then she passed out in the snow from her injuries and was saved by Buck and Athena. It was a beautiful reunion, but it was made even more perfect by Maddy finding out that Chimney survived the attack by Doug that had left him bleeding out. The episode ended with Maddy and Chimney finally kissing, and I was sobbing. These writers and actors sure know how to keep our emotions flowing, and I love it!

On tonight’s episode, “Broken,” when Metro LA’s 9-1-1 system is hit with a massive system-wide power outage, the call center must go “old school” in responding to emergencies. The first responders must deal with explosions in multiple homes and a difficult child birth. Meanwhile, Michael confronts Bobby about parenting his kids.

Find out if the first responders can once again save the day tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching The Resident, The Voice, The Fix, The Enemy Within, Spring Baking Championship, Bull, The Neighborhood, and The Code.
