Tonight, ABC kicks off the new comedy Schooled, which is a 1990-something set spinoff of The Goldbergs. Barry Goldberg’s former girlfriend Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka) hasn’t had much success in launching her music career, so she heads back home and applies for a job as the music teacher at her old high school, William Penn Academy. Lainey thinks that she’ll be able to relate to the students since they aren’t that much younger than herself. In a way that’s true, but she also realizes that she’ll need to quickly step up and take charge if she wants the students to see her as an authority figure. Helping Lainey navigate these new waters are the school’s new principal/former guidance counselor, Mr. Glascott (Tim Meadows) and the familiar Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen). This new peer relationship with her former teachers and calling them by their first names is going to take some getting used to!

A while back, ABC had done a backdoor pilot for this spinoff that wasn’t picked up. They did air the episode last year (and it wasn’t very good). This is a completely re-worked version of the series that is better but is still missing those fun family relationships and sibling rivalry that The Goldbergs offers. This series is not a replacement for the original but has the potential to be a fun 90s counterpart. It follows a lot of the same structure, with Lainey doing narration, photos/clips/interviews with the show’s real-life counterparts during the credits, and lots of great 90s music and fun pop-culture references. It’s hard to tell after just one episode what the focus of the series will be – i.e. does it plan to follow the same students from season to season, will there be other regular teachers in the cast, will we see more Goldbergs cameos after the premiere, etc? But I’m definitely interested in seeing where it goes.

On tonight’s premiere, “Be Like Mike,” Lainey returns to William Penn Academy, where she has a hard time adjusting to being an authority figure; Coach Mellor struggles with Michael Jordan’s influence on modern-day basketball.

See if this new show’s for you tonight on ABC at 8:31/7:31c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, Modern Family, Match Game, The Masked Singer, and I’m Sorry.

Tonight, History kicks off the new scripted drama Project Blue Book. It is set in the 1950s, when there is a general sense of fear of impending doom with the Cold War and a nuclear threat looming. So when people start reporting UFO sightings, Air Force General James Harding (Neal McDonough, Legends of Tomorrow) wants to squash the reports before they cause even more public unrest. He assigns Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey, The Vampire Diaries) to a new clandestine operation, Project Blue Book, and has him recruit Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen, Game of Thrones) to help him spearhead the operation.

Harding is interested in closing the cases as quickly as possible and just wants Captain Quinn to write up the reports and Dr. Hynek to help add scientific reasoning to give the reports legitimacy. Dr. Hynek is a brilliant professor of astrophysics at Ohio State University who had assisted the government during the war. Now he is settled down with wife Mimi (Laura Mennell, Loudermilk, Van Helsing) and their son, who is obsessed with sci-fi comics like Flash Gordon. Dr. Hynek wants to be thorough in his investigations and not necessarily provide the quick answers Harding is looking for. However, during his first case, Allen finds some mysterious and explainable things, uncovers what appears to be a larger conspiracy, and discovers that he’s being followed by a mystery man in a hat. What exactly has he gotten himself into?!

The series mixes sighting-of-the-week cases—based on real cases that Dr. J. Allen Hynek was involved with the 1950s and 60s—with several larger conspiracy/mysteries that are set up in the premiere. The series also stars Michael Harney (Orange is the New Black) as General Hugh Valentine, a man who is colluding on some secret project with General Harding; and Ksenia Solo (TURN: Washington’s Spies, Lost Girl) as Susie, a newlywed woman who is new to town and befriends Allen’s wife, Mimi.

On tonight’s premiere, “The Fuller Dogfight,” astrophysicist Dr. Allen Hynek is recruited by the U.S. Air Force into a top-secret program investigating UFOs; Dr. Hynek joins Capt. Michael Quinn to investigate the case of a military pilot who survived a dogfight with an alien craft.

Check out the fun new sci-fi drama tonight on History Channel at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Kids Are Alright, black-ish, The Rookie, and The Gifted.

It’s another night of fun cooking shows for me, and first up is the season premiere of The Great American Baking Show on ABC. Last season was scrapped after the season premiere when judge Johnny Iuzzini came under fire for sexual harassment (unrelated to this show). Because of that, we missed out on watching this show last year. So it’s been almost a year now since we last saw it, and now we get to meet a new cast as well as a new host and judge!

Ayesha Curry won’t be back as host. Alongside Anthony “Spice” Adams will be Emma Bunton…otherwise known as Baby Spice in the Spice Girls group. And joining last season’s judge (& judge on The Great British Baking Show!) Paul Hollywood is fabulous pastry chef Sherry Yard, who also judged Halloween Baking Championship. I don’t know if I care about either of hosts – I don’t know them well enough yet to – but I really enjoy both judges, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what they have up their sleeves for the bakers this season.

On tonight’s 2-hour premiere, “Cake and Pastry Week,” it’s on your marks, get set, bake…slices of cake, and sweet and savory pastries.

Meet the contestants and new judge and host tonight on ABC starting at 9/8c.

I’ve been pretty captivated the last few months by the new team on Lethal Weapon, which teams up Seann William Scott with Damon Wayans as two unorthodox LAPD detectives, even without having seen the first two seasons. Admittedly, I am obsessed with everything Scott’s done post-Stiffler, but the show does get on, on its own merits.

The last new episode opened with Cole (Scott) MIA, having flaked on his daughter. When she called Murtaugh to look for him, he recommended his daughter Rianna to babysit. Murtaugh was next at the scene of an abduction. He concluded that Cole was abducted by the Vasquez cartel. At the cartel torture house, they pulled out a few of Cole’s fingernails before Sofia Vasquez revealed herself to him. She had him buried alive rather than shooting him. Murtaugh confronted Cole’s CIA handler, Tom Barnes, who insisted he didn’t betray Cole. He “put his best man on the job” and expected him to take out Vasquez.

Throughout the episode, we saw Cole and his baby mama, Natalie, in their first meetings overseas. He was undercover as a photographer and she was a nurse. They fell in love and she got preggers. Back in the present, other former undercover agent, “The Gute” got them a lead that put them on Cole’s trail, but all they found was his bloody discarded fingernails. Murtaugh again confronted Barnes, who recommended they flip former cartel lieutenant Benny Aliva, whom LAPD had in holding. In flashbacks, we saw that Natalie became pregnant while still stationed overseas.

Murtaugh tracked down Cole with Aliva’s help and dug him up before he died. While recovering in the hospital, Cole got immersed in the memory of talking to Natalie about plans for a honeymoon in Bali. Later that night, Cole KO’d Murtaugh and locked him in Mrs. Murtaugh’s trunk so he could go confront Vasquez on his own. Murtaugh woke up to his daughter stealing the car to go out with her bf. When the boyfriend turned creeper, Roger emerged and took the car back. Cole saved Sofia Vasquez from the hit team Aliva was leading against her, with a last-minute assist from Murtaugh. In the final scene, Cole professed his love for Natalie was undying and she kissed him but was very conflicted about the timing.

On tonight’s episode, “What the Puck,” Cole wants to talk to Natalie about their relationship before it’s too late, but a wrench is thrown in his plans after he bumps into a new ADA, Erica (guest star Nishi Munshi). Meanwhile, after being kicked out of the house for Trish’s girl’s night, Murtaugh finds himself an unlikely friend.

See if Cole makes a decision about Natalie tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I am loving season two of The Guest Book. It really threw me at first when I realized they’d switched locations and half the cast, but really, Eddie and Vivian really are fantastic all on their own. Add in the very mismatched couple of Nikki & Tommy and cutie Bodhi, and it’s made for a really fun season so far. My favorite part of last week was when Vivian convinced Bodhi to come stay with her and he found her hidden camera in the tissue box in the bathroom. Somehow she made him think someone from the store had put the camera in there. *snicker* I thought she was going to faint (or have a big O) on the spot when he said the way to get back at them was to…well, pleasure himself in front of the camera so they had to see it. That would serve them right! Ha! That whole scene was hysterical.

The guests have been fun this season too. The “drug rehabilitation” people I think were my favorites – or rather, that story line. I also really loved that they brought back Michael Rapaport’s character from last season. And of course, I’m on pins and needles to see when or if the scorpion is going to strike!

On tonight’s episode, “Invisible Son,” Clem asks a stripper to pretend to be his girlfriend in order to convince his vacationing family that he is normal. Once they get to Bare Feet Retreat we discover that Clem’s fake girlfriend isn’t the only thing he’s been lying about. Lexi Ainsworth, Lisa Rinna, Matthew Willig, Pete Davidson, & Tipper Newton guest star.

To see what else Clem lied about, tune in to TBS at 10:30/9:30c.
