Phoebe’s Choice

We’re kind of lucky to have any Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at all this year. It was supposed to get axed after season 6, but when Inhumans flopped (hard), this show was extended. Comic book TV content is still highly in demand, and Fox also cancelled The Gifted, so something had to be salvaged. To be brutally honest, this season could be written off as mashup of Legends of Tomorrow & 12 Monkeys, but we’ve grown to love these characters so much, we’ll take them packaged however, wherever, whenever. So I’m gonna be grateful that we are spiraling through time with the core S.H.I.E.L.D. crew led by Mac, sans Fitz but with a robot Coulson & an afflicted Mae. Why? Because it has been phenomenal so far, as we’ve spent 2 episodes in the 1930s and now 2 in the 1950s.

Last week started with a unique show logo and robot Coulson as a film noir narrator in an appropriately black & white episode. Agent Surry from the short-lived yet classic Agent Carter crossed paths with the time-displaced team already. Robo-Coulson realized as he was in Sousa’s custody that that day was the one that Sousa was meant to die, after delivering a vital piece of technology to Howard Stark. Initially he sought to preserve history and steered Sousa towards his (later famous and revered) doom, but a number of problems cropped up on the way. For one thing, in retrieval of the item, Deek got kidnapped by Hydra. Yo-yo got away with the item, but instead of taking it to Coulson, she was preoccupied with saving Deek. To comedic effect, Enoch was again left as a bartender in the speakeasy where we last saw him in the 1930s. This time his only use was in patching the comms of the crew in a tech-starved era. In the end they faked Sousa’s death and took him forward with them on their next time hop after smoothing out history and foiling the Chronicons attempts to sabotage the timestream.

On tonight’s episode, “A Trout in the Milk,” after a bumpy landing in the disco decade, the team — Daniel Sousa in tow — reunites with more than one familiar face at the S.H.I.E.L.D. hangout and discovers exactly how to dismantle the Chronicoms’ latest plan. But when they get too close for comfort, the Zephyr unexpectedly leaps forward again, this time to a date pivotal to not only the future of S.H.I.E.L.D. but to the future of Director Mack as well.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/7/20

Jenny’s Choice

After almost a year (!!!), we’re FINALLY getting the final season premiere of Blindspot tonight. In case you don’t remember, on the 2-part season finale, the team was racing against the clock to stop Madeline Burke’s Helios attack. When they finally got a lead into two of her associates and tracked one down, they found him with Keaton. Turned out the guy was former CIA. Nash, Keaton’s boss, showed up. They argued and agreed to go to a neutral location and question him together, but on the drive there, rockets blew up the SUV and killed him. In order to figure out who the mole inside the CIA or FBI was, the FBI brought in Madeline from prison, but she fed them nothing but whining about being innocent and this being an attack on her from the FBI, just like they had a problem with her father.

They captured Dominic on security cams at the Belmore science lab, getting handed a package. That’s when we found out Nash was the mole in the CIA and he warned Dominic to get away from Belmore before the team could get there. They did find the woman who gave Dominic the package. They were shocked when they found out it was a computer virus, not a biological agent. Not long after that, they figured out his target: NYIOC, which controls the power grid to the entire East Coast. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get to Dominic in time to stop him from uploading the virus. Patterson and Zapata stayed in the lab to try to stop the virus, while Jane & Weller went after Dominic. During his escape, Jane and Weller cornered him in the hallway, and he basically sacrificed himself for the cause. And unfortunately, Kathy was still working with him (remember, she thought they were in love…), so she was able to stop Patterson from halting the virus…and the entire power grid went down.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/20/20

Kyle’s Choice

Last week, ABC kicked off the new series The Baker and the Beauty, the US version of an Israeli romantic comedy series (the orthogonal version is available on Amazon Prime). Daniel Garcia (Victor Rasuk, Jack Ryan, How to Make It in America) works in his family’s Miami bakery and has been dating girlfriend Vanessa (Michelle Veintimilla, Gotham) for year, but he’s not sure he wants to move to the next level. So when she surprises him by proposing in a crowded restaurant, Daniel’s response is “No.” Vanessa storms out of the restaurant, but not before pouring Daniel’s soup all over him. One of those looking on at this embarrassing situation is international superstar Noa Hamilton (Nathalie Kelley, Dynasty, The Vampire Diaries), who just went through her own very public break-up. Noa invites Daniel to join her and her entourage for a night on the town, and the two really hit it off. While Daniel and Noa may have some sparks, they come from two very different worlds and cultures. Daniel isn’t used to being part of the spotlight and comes from a close working-class family, while Noa is used to the paparazzi and a rich, lavish lifestyle.

Daniel’s brother Mateo (David Del Rio, Grease Live!) is in disbelief when he learns who Daniel is with, and his younger sister Natalie (Belissa Escobedo) is overjoyed, as she is Noa Hamilton’s number-one fan, viewing her as a role model. Daniel’s parents, Mari (Lisa Vidal, Being Mary Jane) and Rafael (Carlos Gómez, Madam Secretary, The Glades), are also surprised but happy to find out about the proposal and subsequent rejection, as they never really liked Vanessa. Vanessa, on the other hand, realized that she may have overreacted and was on her way to apologize for her ambush proposal when she sees the paparazzi photos of Daniel and Noa together.

I enjoyed last week’s premiere way more than I expected to. It has lots of humor but also quite a bit of heart. The connection between Daniel and Noa feels genuine, and the Garcias also feel like they could be a real family. I really appreciated how they love and support each other, while also having a bit of fun ribbing on one another. I’m looking forward to seeing how this “two people from two different worlds” relationship plays out as both Noa and Daniel try to figure out how to proceed with their relationship and navigate each other’s lives. And I also want to see how Vanessa reacts to all this and if she’s going to try to win Daniel back.

On tonight’s episode, “Ruin My Life,” Noa and Daniel’s relationship begins to flourish; after an unwanted birthday party for Noa, Daniel discovers more about her past; a food critic puts in an outrageous food order the Garcias cannot refuse to take.

Traverse the relationship between Noa and Daniel with them tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/5/20

Earlier this week, FX kicked off the new FX on Hulu program, where shows that air on FX will also be available for streaming to all Hulu subscribers the next day. However, FX will be airing its new limited series Devs exclusively as a FX on Hulu original, bypassing the cable network altogether. Today the first two episodes of the 8-episode series are available to stream on Hulu.

Devs is a tech thriller set in the near future. Lily Chan (Sonoya Mizuno, Ex Machina) and her boyfriend Sergei (Karl Glusman, Nocturnal Animals) both work for tech company Amaya – she in the encryption division and he in A.I. division. Company founder Forest (Nick Offerman, Parks and Recreation) is a brilliant man but a bit of a recluse ever since the death of his young daughter, for whom he named the company. There is also an enormous statue erected on the campus in her memory.

Sergei is giving a presentation about his current project to Forest and his right-hand engineer, Katie (Alison Pill, American Horror Story, Star Trek: Picard), demonstrating how he is able to predict the future movements and behavior of a small organism. The two are impressed with his work and invite him to join their top secret Devs division. Lily is excited for Sergei but knows that he cannot tell her anything about his work. However, the day that he starts in his new position, Sergei goes missing.

Now, as Lily desperately delves into this, trying to figure out what happened to her boyfriend, she starts to unlock some secrets about Sergei and what is really going on at the company and in this top secret division. The only person Lily can trust and turn to is her ex, a hacker named Jamie (Jin Ha, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert). Meanwhile, Forest’s ruthless head of security Kenton (Zach Grenier, The Good Wife) will do anything to protect the company’s secrets. Other regular characters include Devs department engineers Lyndon (Cailee Spaeny, On the Basis of Sex) and Stewart (Stephen McKinley Henderson, New Amsterdam), and Pete (Jefferson Hall, Taboo), the homeless man who lives outside Lily and Sergei’s apartment.

The series comes from writer/director Alex Garland (Annihilation, Ex Machina, Dredd) and certainly has a similar feeling to his other work. It mixes technology and thriller with a more cosmic and ethereal look and feel. The show takes place in a slightly futuristic San Francisco, where this Google-like company has its hands in all major technology. The first two episodes introduce viewers to this slightly off world and characters and sets up the mysteries of what exactly happened to Sergei, what exactly is this Devs team working on, and is Forest hiding something? I really like the cast and atmosphere the show sets up, but a warning that this show is a bit of a slow burn, going more for an atmosphere than non-stop action.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/23/20

Jenny’s Choice

When we last left off with our favorite rookies on…well, The Rookie, the cops had been escorting female serial killer Rosalind Dyer around to where she buried some of her former victims. Unfortunately, she had a protégé out there killing anew and leaving their bodies in the same places. They thought they had the killer narrowed down, but then when Lucy Chen met a guy at the bar after work and they hit it off enough to see each other after work the next time, it turned out he spiked her drink and shoved her into his trunk…and then into the barrel like where the other women had died. Talk about a cliffhanger!! And on the not-so-cliffie side, Wesley went back to work after being stabbed in the shelter during the bomb scare, but he wasn’t ready and ended up taking too many pills along with his alcohol, and Angela found him passed out on the couch, which scared her to pieces.

So here we are, just over two months later for us, but obviously not much time will have passed with the gang because I doubt Melissa O’Neil (Lucy) is going anywhere. But still…it’ll be an exciting ride, hopefully, to see how they figure out where she is and how they rescue her!

On tonight’s episode, “Day of Death,” Officer Nolan and the entire team are in a desperate search to rescue Officer Chen after her abduction and must attempt to get Rosalind to help them in their search. Meanwhile, after Officer Lopez discovers Wesley unconscious from a dangerous cocktail of alcohol and pills, she is forced to keep him close by.

Don’t miss the excitement tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, NCIS: LA, Beat Bobby Flay, & NCIS: New Orleans.
