houdinidoyle52smallTonight, FOX kicks off the new series Houdini & Doyle, a British/Canadian/American co-production inspired by the real-life friendship between illusionist Harry Houdini and author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The series takes place in 1900, where friends Harry Houdini (Michael Weston, House, Six Feet Under) and Dr. Arthur Conan Doyle (Stephen Mangan, Episodes) find themselves teaming up with Scotland Yard to help solve inexplicable crimes and supernatural-based cases. The pair has a bit of a Mulder/Scully type of dynamic – while Doyle is much more open to the supernatural and spiritual, Houdini is a skeptic who believes everything can be explained in the same manner as his illusions. This causes the pair to constantly butt heads on their cases and wager as to the outcome. Joining these amateur detectives on their cases is fresh-faced female police officer Constable Adelaide Stratton (Rebecca Liddiard).

The series comes from producers David Shore (House) and David N. Titcher (The Librarians), and their influence can easily be seen. It combines interesting case-of-the-week type procedural elements with the humorous banter and interactions between the main characters. If you’re looking for a light, fun supernatural drama to add to your schedule, this one is definitely worth checking out. I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere and look forward to seeing what adventures Houdini and Doyle get involved in over the course of the show’s short 10-episode first season.

On tonight’s premiere, “The Maggie’s Redress,” the two investigate the murder of a nun who was killed in the infamous Magdalene Laundries.

Meet the new Houdini and Doyle tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Castle, Blindspot, Gotham, Jane the Virgin, The Detour, Bates Motel, 12 Monkeys, TURN: Washington’s Spies, and The Odd Couple.

blindspot229smallWe haven’t had a new episode of Blindspot since this time in NOVEMBER! Crazy that it’s been just over three months. So here’s a hopefully quick recap of where we left off. Patterson’s (ex-)boyfriend David was killed after following a woman he saw look at and do something with the book he and Patterson had found in the library. That woman turned out to be a sleeper agent – a Russian spy who’d lived quietly as an American for years until she was called up, who was able to surprise him and kill him, despite the man following David (who turned out to be an agent assigned by Mayfair to keep him safe). There were two other Russian sleeper agents. Ultimately, the team was able to take them down, including the woman who’d killed David. Jane then sneaked out of her safe house and went to Weller’s place, where she proclaimed she wanted a time that was just them, and then they kissed. And all the shippers cheered until his nephew interrupted them. Damn kids! LOL

Then Jane left to walk home, but she was kidnapped…by Carter’s team, we realized when she woke up to find herself tied down in a basement somewhere. He started torturing her by pouring water over her face and asking her who she is and what she knows about Project Daylight. She swore she didn’t know and finally asked him about Orion, which infuriated him even further. He picked up a drill, but before he could harm her further, the guy with the tree tattoo from Jane’s flashback memories swooped in and killed him. Then he showed Jane a video on his phone of her, before the tattoos and the FBI, saying to trust Oscar and that…dun, dun, dun…it was ALL her idea! Meanwhile, Zapata decided she was done playing ball with Carter, and rather than putting the bug in Jane’s place, she decided she would resign from the FBI.

Okay, so a lot of people kind of guessed that Jane had done it to herself. Now we know for certain that she did. What does that mean going forward? Why did she do it? Was she a good guy then too, or was she a bad guy and has she changed now that her memories were wiped? Is Carter really dead, or did he somehow survive three bullets to the chest? Did Zapata already turn in her resignation, or did Carter’s death save her career? And what about Jane & Weller? Did the kiss – or Jane’s new knowledge of her past – change things? I’ve seen tonight’s episode, and we will get answers to some of those things but not all! I have a feeling some of it will play out the rest of the season, if not series!

On tonight’s episode, “Cease Forcing Enemy,” Jane reels from a series of massive revelations about her tattoos and grapples with whether to trust Oscar (guest star Francois Arnaud). Meanwhile, a tattoo leads the team to a shocking discovery in the Black Sea.

See what the team discovers in the Black Sea tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Cake Wars, Lucifer, Major Crimes, Scorpion, NCIS: LA, & Castle.

blindspot119smallMy pick tonight is Blindspot. For someone who doesn’t like conspiracies in my TV shows, it’s amazing that I love this one as much as I do, since it is almost nothing BUT conspiracies! Last week, Weller, Jane, and his team went up to the back country to an address Patterson deciphered from one of Jane’s tattoos. There, they found a bad man (played by Lou Diamond Phillips, who I ADORE) connected to Mayfair. They had to follow even more clues and tattoos to get out of there alive after the militia (or whatever they technically were) hunted them down and shot at them. At the end of the map, they found a helicopter, which Jane knew how to fly. Meanwhile, Patterson’s boyfriend couldn’t keep his nose to himself, so while he ended up helping her to solve one of the tattoos, Mayfair caught them. Not only did she have the tattoo images out of the FBI building, but she’d told him about them, which was a no-no. So she was in big trouble. Mayfair said this was her one mistake, so she wasn’t fired, but because of it, she broke up with her boyfriend after he’d just convinced her to let him move in.

So now Weller knows something isn’t on the up-and-up with Mayfair. Will he find out more details this week, and if he does, will he share with Jane or the others? And now that Jane and Weller have begun to admit their feelings for one another are more than professional, will that continue?

On tonight’s episode, “Persecute Envoys,” after a police officer is murdered, Patterson unlocks a disturbing tattoo that appears to have predicted his killing, and the team chases a violent clue trail to stop further attacks. Mayfair reveals secrets from her past to Weller, seriously testing their relationship.

See if the team can stop the attacks tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Chopped, Supergirl, Cake Wars, Major Crimes, Scorpion, NCIS: LA, & Castle.

fargo1012smallTonight, Fargo returns to FX for the start of a whole new season/story, this time set in 1979. In the first season, Lou Solverson referred to a case he had worked on decades earlier in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This season, we head back to when Solverson (Patrick Wilson, A Gifted Man) was a young State Police Officer reporting to his father-in-law, Sheriff Hank Larsson (Ted Danson, CSI), as he looks into a case involving beautician Peggy Blumquist (Kirsten Dunst, Spider-Man) and her butcher’s assistant husband Ed (Jesse Plemons, Breaking Bad). Along the way, they cross paths with Fargo’s local crime family, the Gerhardts – matriarch Floyd (Jean Smart, 24) and her three sons Dodd (Jeffrey Donovan, Burn Notice), Bear (Angus Sampson, Mad Max: Fury Road), and Rye (Kieran Culkin, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) – as well as the local representative of the Kansas City crime syndicate Joe Bulo (Brad Garrett, Everybody Loves Raymond) and his number two, Mike Milligan (Bokeem Woodbine, Riddick). Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) also stars as town lawyer/con artist Karl Weathers.

I loved the first season of Fargo. It was one of my favorite shows of last year. I loved the way it blended of wacky characters and situations with extremely serious, heart-pounding drama and mystery. I can’t wait to re-enter this world tonight!

On tonight’s premiere, “Waiting for Dutch,” a surprising event at a diner disrupts the citizens of a small Minnesota town.

See what event causes a ruckus tonight on FX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, Life in Pieces, Castle, Blindspot, Gotham, Minority Report, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin, Switched at Birth, Awkward., and Faking It.

ncisla928smallLast week was the season premiere of NCIS: LA, still one of my favorite shows, seven seasons in. The episode was almost all about Callen, which I’m kind of getting tired of. Don’t get me wrong… I love him. But isn’t it time to focus on one of the other members of the team? Kensi, Deeks, and Sam all have stories to tell too! But back to Callen… He was searching for Arkady, who we last saw in the season finale, after he’d been shot and the team had to leave him in the parking garage. To do that, Callen was lone-wolfing it, trying to do it all alone, and the others weren’t happy about it – especially Granger and Hetty. In the end, it all calmed down, and while Callen is still looking for Arkady, he’s not going to be going it alone as much. In addition to that, we got to hear the first (to us) “I love you”s from Kensi and Deeks, and Anatoli Kirkin was back to embarrass Deeks every time he mentioned the naked bath from last season.

This should be another good episode for fans of Deeks and Densi shippers, as we get to meet Deeks’s mom! And with Talia back, it should be fun!

On tonight’s episode, “Citadel,” DEA Agent Talia Del Campo (Mercedes Mason)
turns to the team for help after her partner is murdered. Also, after Kensi grows suspicious that Deeks is hiding something, he surprises her by introducing her to his mother (Pamela Reed).

Meet Deeks’s mom and see if the team can solve the murder and keep Talia safe tonight on CBS at 9:59/8:59c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Big Bang Theory, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Rachael Ray’s Kids Cook-Off, Life in Pieces, Minority Report, Scorpion, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Blindspot, & Castle.
