Tonight, the second season of Syfy’s futuristic space drama, The Expanse, takes flight with an exciting 2-hour premiere. In the first season, the ice hauler Canterbury was redirected to answer a distress signal from the freighter Scopuli, and the crew soon found themselves under attack from a stealth ship. As the surviving crew members tried to figure out what happened, they joined forces with a police detective from the asteroid belt, who was looking for Julie Mao, the daughter of a wealthy couple. They soon learned that Julie had become lethally infected while investigating a dangerous new biological weapon. The group then found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time as the mysterious creators of this weapon were performing a large-scale test on the residents of the remote Eros colony. They managed to escape on the Rocinante just as the protomolecule spread across the station, but a couple members of the crew had severe radiation poisoning.

As the second season opens, the fallout from the Eros incident has sent relations between Earth and Mars plummeting and a war is looming. Is there anything that can restore the peace? Who created this bioweapon, and what do they plan to do with it? Is someone purposely trying to cause a rift in the UN? Is there any place safe for the crew of the Rocinante, and what will they do with information they gathered on Eros? Can they stop this protomolecule or find a cure?

I really enjoyed tonight’s 2-hour premiere. It has a great mix of political drama and space/sci-fi action. There are some really interesting developments regarding the UN and the Earth/Mars relationship, we are introduced a whole new crew of Martian characters who will no doubt have a big role in this developing battle/conspiracy, and we also see our gang embarking on an exciting new mission. All of this leads to some pretty exciting moments and even more questions to be answered. I look forward to seeing what developments the rest of the season holds.

On tonight’s premiere, “Safe; Doors & Corners,” James Holden and the crew deal with the aftermath of their escape from Eros in the first half of this combined Season 2 premiere. In the second half, Holden and the crew stage a dangerous raid in search of information about the protomolecule.

See how the group deals with the fallout from the previous season tonight on Syfy 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Hunted, Criminal Minds, Arrow, The 100, Workaholics, Jeff & Some Aliens, Man Seeking Woman, The Magicians, and Suits.

Before I write up my pick for tonight, which is NCIS: LA, I want to take a moment to mention the death of Miguel Ferrer, who played Assistant Director Owen Granger. He passed away last week, I believe due to cancer. He will certainly be missed, both the man and the character. Besides this show, he has starred and guest starred on many shows and movies. I’ll always remember him fondly for both this and Crossing Jordan, where he played Dr. Garrett Macy.

Gah! NCIS: LA is killing me with the break between the episodes of this mole arc! On the previous episode two weeks ago, it seemed like the mole stepped up his or her game and sicced all available alphabet agencies on the members of the NCIS team. A dead body and drugs were found in Sam’s car by DEA. ATF found explosives in Callen’s house. Deeks was once again being held by his own LAPD and Internal Affairs. And Granger was found hovering over Heather Wilson’s severely beaten body and was arrested. Since Hetty was dealing with Under Secretary of Defense Duggan, that left Kensi on her own, and she’s not even back to work yet! Of course, everyone protested their innocence, claiming the mole was setting them all up. Some of them seemed to be making some headway, but then things really went sour. Just as Hetty had convinced Duggan that helping her find and take down the mole would be better for his career than taking her down, especially since she was innocent, he was shot and killed by an unknown sniper when he went out to stall the FBI SWAT team so Hetty and Kensi (who’d kidnapped Heather Wilson from the hospital in order to get info from her) could escape. Fortunately, before they left via the hatch in the floor, Heather mentioned the CIA. Another horrible thing for the team? Granger was stabbed in jail!

So what does all this mean for the team?? Will Granger survive? If he does, I’m not sure how it’ll work, given his portrayer’s death. I can’t wait to find out, but be prepared… After tonight’s episode, the next (and final episode in the three-ep mole arc) won’t air until February 19th!

On tonight’s episode, “Under Siege,” Hetty goes rogue, leaving the NCIS team completely in the dark, and the mole kidnaps one of the agents.

Find out who gets kidnapped tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Guy’s Grocery Games, To Tell the Truth, & Worst Cooks in America.

Tonight, Syfy’s fantasy series The Magicians returns for its second season. This series was a pleasant surprise for me last year. When I saw that the premise was about a bunch of people in magic school, I jumped to the incorrect conclusion that it was just going to be Harry Potter in college. However, the show has a very unique style and more of an adult tone, and halfway through the first season the series took a very creepy, dark turn that had me hooked.

When the series left off, the group had made their way from Brakebills College to the magical land of Fillory, a place they thought only existed in a series of novels. Eliot discovered that he was next in line to become High King of Fillory and agreed to get married, meaning he could never leave this land. Meanwhile, the others sought a magical blade that would help them defeat the Beast, who had been threatening the lives of those back at Brakebills. However, the confrontation with the Beast didn’t go as planned. Alice, who had swallowed the magical “elixir,” froze under pressure and the group was badly injured. Penny got the worst of it, losing both his hands. Meanwhile, Julia, who was still reeling over her revelation that she had been violated by a trickster, snatched the blade and appeared to make some kind of deal with the Beast, helping him to get away.

The second season picks up right where we left off as the gang must regroup, tend to their wounds, and figure out their next move. Can they forgive Julia’s betrayal? What deal did she make with the Beast? How will the group prepare to face the Beast again? I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere – it is a lot lighter and funnier than I would have expected, given the extremely dark direction the first season headed. The premiere has some really funny moments and sets up some interesting quests/journeys for each of the characters, kicking off what looks to be another thoroughly entertaining season.

I got a chance to speak with the cast about the new season at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. You can check out my videos at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Knight of Crowns,” in the aftermath of their clash with the Beast, Quentin and his friends scramble for a new plan. Meanwhile, Julia and the Beast strike a dangerous deal.

Learn what deal Julia made tonight on Syfy at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Hunted, Arrow, Frequency, Workaholics, Jeff & Some Aliens, Man Seeking Woman, Incorporated, Suits, and The Young Pope.

Tonight, Supergirl returns from its holiday hiatus. When we last left off, CADMUS had unleashed its deadly Project Medusa virus, which had originally been created by Kara’s father as a precautionary weapon to kill all non-Kryptonians but has now been altered to eliminate all non-humans. A small-scale test of the weapon left Mon-El infected and Eliza looking for a cure. Supergirl tried to stop Lillian from dispersing more of the virus, but she arrived too late – Lena had already launched the rocket. However, it turned out that Lena was only pretending to help her mother and that she had replaced the virus with an inert gas. Elsewhere, J’onn was locked in a battle with Cyborg Superman and was forced to use his White Martian mutation to defeat him. At the end of the episode, Alex finally got a chance to come out to her sister, just before Kara was whisked off by Barry Allen and Cisco for her big DC crossover adventure.

How will Kara’s other-earthly adventures affect her now that she’s back on her own Earth? Can Lena be trusted – is there really such a thing as a good Luthor? Has J’onn finally accepted the fact that he’s going to become a White Martian, or will he continue to look for ways to fight the mutation? I really enjoy Supergirl because it is one of the lighter, more fun shows in The CW’s DC lineup. The series has already been renewed for a third season, so there’s plenty more fun adventures for Kara to come.

On tonight’s episode, “Supergirl Lives,” the story of a missing woman named Izzy moves Kara to investigate, even though Snapper Carr has told her to leave the matter alone. When Kara and Mon-El check out the last place Izzy was seen, they end up thrust through a portal to another planet, where the downtrodden are sold as slaves as part of a trafficking ring run by Roulette. Meanwhile, Alex blames herself – and her new relationship with Maggie – for her sister’s disappearance.

Find out how Kara gets home tonight on The CW at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Quantico, Man With a Plan, The Celebrity Apprentice, Timeless, Gotham, Lucifer, Jane the Virgin, Beyond, and The Young Pope.

Tonight, CBS launches the new reality series, Hunted, and I can’t wait to check it out. Nine teams of ordinary people will participate in a real-life manhunt as they try to evade capture for 28 days. Each team that manages to succeed will take home $250K! However, these contestants will be hunted by a team of highly-skilled investigators utilizing the latest technology. The Hunters in the field will work with the agents in the Command Center, looking at phone and browser histories and whatever else they can get their hands on to try to identify potential collaborators and figure out where the fugitives are hiding in the massive 100K-square-mile game area in the southeastern U.S. This show sounds so exciting, and I can’t wait to meet the investigators and fugitives and see how this adventure plays out. Who will let the pressure get to them, how will they slip up, and who will manage to evade capture for 28 days?!

On tonight’s premiere, “The Internet Never Forgets,” one team loses valuable time in their escape from town, and a pencil could foil another couple’s plan.

Watch the teams try to escape their pursuers tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Tonight’s premiere airs after the football game on the East Coast, which means it will likely get delayed, so be sure to pad your DVR recording.

I’ll also be watching/recording Son of Zorn, Worst Cooks in America, The Librarians, The Young Pope, and Homeland.
