drken102smallTonight, Ken Jeong (Community) takes on his first starring sitcom role in the new series Dr. Ken. While Dr. Ken Park is a great physician, he is completely oblivious to his horrible bedside manner. The series is half office comedy/half family sitcom, following Ken as he tries to balance his work and family lives. There’s always some crazy patient or office politics to deal with at work with coworkers Damona (Tisha Campbell-Martin), Clark (Jonathan Slavin, Better Off Ted), Julie (Kate Simses, Mixology), and boss Pat (Dave Foley, NewsRadio). And when Ken heads home, teenage daughter Molly (Krista Marie Yu, The Thundermans) and nerdy son Dave (Albert Tsai, Trophy Wife) keep him busy – but therapist wife Allison (Suzy Nakamura, Go On) is also there to help keep him centered.

Based on tonight’s pilot, I can’t say that this is a show that I’ll be checking out every week. However, those looking for another TGIF-style family sitcom to kick off the weekend, this may be what the doctor ordered. Ken Jeong’s character is a bit more subdued from his usual films and TV roles, but those who enjoy his style of humor will probably like this role as well.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” Ken needs a therapy session with Allison when he tires of his patients’ complaints; and Molly’s driving test makes her dad nervous that she just might pass.

Meet Dr. Ken and his family tonight on ABC at 8:31/7:31c.

I’ll be watching/recording The Amazing Race, Z Nation, and Continuum.

codeblack930smallThere are a lot of police procedurals on TV currently and have been for years. There’ve been a good number of medical dramas as well, although there aren’t a ton of those on right now. For me, I’ve been missing a really good medical drama (that hasn’t become totally a soap opera) since ER went off the air. I have hopes that tonight’s premiere of Code Black will fill that whole in my TV lineup.

Based on the award-winning documentary by Ryan McGarry, it’s centered around the busiest, most notorious ER in the nation – Angels Memorial in Los Angeles –where the staggering number of patients can outweigh the limited resources available to the extraordinary doctors and nurses – creating a condition known as Code Black. Marcia Gay Harden plays Residency Director Dr. Leanne Rorish, known for performing high-risk procedures in Center Stage, the trauma area reserved for the most critical cases. Her four new first-year residents are Christa Lorenson (Bonnie Somerville), Malaya Pineda (Melanie Kannokada), Mario Savetti (Benjamin Hollingsworth), and Angus Leighton (Harry M. Ford). Leanne’s confidante, Jesse Sallander (Luis Guzman), is an amiable seen-it-all senior nurse who manages the residents. Raza Jaffrey plays Dr. Neal Hudson, an excellent physician who sometimes disagrees with Leanne’s “cowboy” approach, while William Allen Young plays Dr. Rollie Guthrie, the energetic, longest-serving attending in the ER.

I’ve seen tonight’s premiere, and it’s really a great hour of television. You’ll be missing out if you don’t at least check it out.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Residency Director Dr. Leanne Rorish puts her four new first-year residents to work immediately on their first day at Angels Memorial Hospital, in the busiest ER in the nation.

Meet the new doctors tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll be watching/DVRing The Mysteries of Laura, Rosewood, Steampunk’d, The Goldbergs, Criminal Minds, Law & Order: SVU, Modern Family, Worst Cooks in America, black-ish, & Chicago PD.

ncisla928smallLast week was the season premiere of NCIS: LA, still one of my favorite shows, seven seasons in. The episode was almost all about Callen, which I’m kind of getting tired of. Don’t get me wrong… I love him. But isn’t it time to focus on one of the other members of the team? Kensi, Deeks, and Sam all have stories to tell too! But back to Callen… He was searching for Arkady, who we last saw in the season finale, after he’d been shot and the team had to leave him in the parking garage. To do that, Callen was lone-wolfing it, trying to do it all alone, and the others weren’t happy about it – especially Granger and Hetty. In the end, it all calmed down, and while Callen is still looking for Arkady, he’s not going to be going it alone as much. In addition to that, we got to hear the first (to us) “I love you”s from Kensi and Deeks, and Anatoli Kirkin was back to embarrass Deeks every time he mentioned the naked bath from last season.

This should be another good episode for fans of Deeks and Densi shippers, as we get to meet Deeks’s mom! And with Talia back, it should be fun!

On tonight’s episode, “Citadel,” DEA Agent Talia Del Campo (Mercedes Mason)
turns to the team for help after her partner is murdered. Also, after Kensi grows suspicious that Deeks is hiding something, he surprises her by introducing her to his mother (Pamela Reed).

Meet Deeks’s mom and see if the team can solve the murder and keep Talia safe tonight on CBS at 9:59/8:59c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Big Bang Theory, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Rachael Ray’s Kids Cook-Off, Life in Pieces, Minority Report, Scorpion, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Blindspot, & Castle.

quantico927smallJoining ABC’s Sunday lineup tonight is the new drama Quantico. There has been a major terrorist attack on New York City, and the FBI suspect that it may have been initiated by a sleeper agent within the organization. As the investigation happens in the present, the show jumps back nine months earlier as a diverse crop of new trainees enters the FBI academy in Quantico, VA. Could one of these new recruits be the terrorist who masterminded the attack?

In the opener, we meet all the trainees, learn some of their secrets, and see some shifty behavior that makes all of them look like potential suspects. At the heart of the series is Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra), a tough, independent young woman who has a knack for reading people and noticing small details. The other agents include former Marine Ryan Booth (Jake McLaughlin, Believe), Mormon Eric Packer (Brian Jacob Smith, Stargate Universe), devout Muslim Nimah Amin (Yasmine Al Massri, Crossbones), girl-next-door Shelby Wyatt (Johanna Braddy, UnREAL), former CPA Simon Asher (Tate Ellington, The Mindy Project), golden boy Caleb Haas (Graham Rogers, Revolution), and instructors Liam O’Connor (Josh Hopkins, Cougar Town) and Miranda Shaw (Aunjanue Ellis, The Book of Negroes).

When I first saw the ads for the series, I had written it off as Grey’s Anatomy meets How To Get Away With Murder. However, I was pleasantly surprised by tonight’s premiere – it introduces some interesting characters, premise, and central mystery. It mixes some humor in with the drama and gives viewers some very unexpected and exciting twists. I look forward to seeing how it all plays out in the coming weeks as I try to figure out which of the recruits is hiding the biggest secret of them all!

On tonight’s premiere, “Run,” the new recruits arrive at the FBI Academy, where they are tasked with discovering a redacted secret about one of their classmates.

Meet the new recruits tonight on ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording CSI, Once Upon a Time, Blood & Oil, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy, The Last Man on Earth, The Strain, The Great Food Truck Race, Fear the Walking Dead, Project Greenlight, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

hawaiifiveo925smallOn last season’s finale of Hawaii Five-0, Kono and Adam finally got married…after the team found and stopped a nuclear bomb from going off on the island. It had been stolen from a military transport and flown in to Hawaii, but when the team got there, the pilot was dead and the bad guys and the bomb were gone. They thought the main bad guy was in it to sell the bomb for money, but it turned out he just wanted to set it off to start a war that America would finish. When the team found the bomb, it was on a shopping trolley, set to go off in the middle of the city.

Meanwhile, a few days before the wedding, Chin confronted Adam about his connection to the Yakuza, but Adam’s explanation about the man he’d been photographed with made Chin feel better, and when Adam told him that he would give up everything – including his company – it was too sweet. Chin had to go to the car to get the rings, and his brother-in-law, bad-guy Gabriel, surprised him, holding a gun on him. Gabriel was getting back into business, and he offered Chin half his earnings if he stayed out of Gabriel’s way. When Chin turned him down, Gabriel said to turn around, but instead of shooting him, he was gone when Chin turned back.

Finally, Catharine returned to the island for the wedding, surprising Steve, and while their reunion was warm, it was also awkward. I have a feeling she won’t be staying long… And Danny got big news when Rachel asked to speak to him, and she brought Charlie, her son. She said that he was sick and needed a bone marrow transplant, but neither she nor Grace were a match, so she wanted Danny to get tested because…Charlie was his son.

This season starts off right after the ceremony. With Gabriel on the loose, Catherine in town, and now Danny learning he’s got a 2nd kid, it should be a fun season premiere!

On tonight’s episode, “Mai ho`oni i ka wai lana mâlie (Do Not Disturb the Water that is Tranquil),” a murder leads Five-0 to investigate a centuries-old Oahu palace raid involving pirates, buried treasure and a killer who is using a stolen painting as a map. Also, the morning after their wedding, Kono and Adam are threatened and tortured by Gabriel, and Danny shows concern for McGarrett regarding Catherine’s return to the island.

See how Kono and Adam get away from Gabriel and if Five-0 can find the treasure, tune in to CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Amazing Race, Last Man Standing, & Blue Bloods.
