My first pick tonight is the season finale of Home Free. This show on FOX has been a lot of fun. It combines a design-competition show with a feel-good, heartwarming one. Nine couples started the show, thinking they were competing to be the last couple standing to earn their dream home. Each week, all the couples worked together – on teams and down to individual couples last week for the top three – on renovating an old or worn-down or just plain out-of-date home, and Mike Holmes decided which couple to send home. What the contestants didn’t learn until after the other teams had left the site was that the lucky family to get the home they’d just finished renovating was them. So all nine couples will win a house, not just the final, “winning” couple.

This was really fantastic to me, for a lot of reasons. One, each of the couples really needed a new home. Whether they’d hit on hard times, outgrown their old home, or (in the case of the sisters who “lost” last week and wanted a house for their parents so they could be closer to them now that their father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s) for whatever reason, the new home was needed. But my favorite thing about the show was that they aren’t just giving homes to lucky couples. The couples WORKED for them. They put their blood, sweat, and tears into each of the houses, even down to the final two teams on tonight’s episode. I love it.

On tonight’s season finale, “Dream Holmes,” week after week, each couple followed Mike’s lead and pushed themselves to make the best home possible for a deserving family. Weeks of tools, dry wall, and construction all come down to this moment when the winner is revealed!

See who takes the win and check out the final two houses tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/2/14

What a difference a couple of weeks makes in TV land! A couple of weeks ago, we were bombarded by tons of season finales, and now we are a little less busy with a few new episodes each night—it’s bittersweet. On one hand, it’s a nice break, but still, I miss all my shows. While I ponder my need to fulfill my TV addiction, let’s see what we’re recommending to help ease the withdrawal.

mistresses62smallTonight is the second season premiere of Mistresses, and what a mess we’re going to get into after last season. This show is pure drama that has great writing along with a fabulous cast. I have to be honest that at first, I wasn’t sure I was going to like this show because it was too much like a soap opera, but after a few episodes, I was hooked. Whether it’s an illicit affair or a secret pregnancy, this show is one to keep you on the edge of your seat constantly with eagerness to see where they’ll go next. If you haven’t watched this show in the past, now is the time to start for sure.

On tonight’s episode, “Rebuild,” eight months later, Savi, having cheated death, makes the most of her second chance. Karen struggles to rebound from loss, both personal and professional. April’s life gets interesting when old friend, Mickey (guest star Joseph May), returns and pushes her to make some changes, and Joss tries her hand at a new job: party planner to wealthy Angelenos.

To see what our crazy ladies get up to this season, tune in to ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching MasterChef, 24: Live Another Day, Whose Line is it Anyway?, and Rewrapped.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/27/13

It’s Monday, but it’s also Memorial Day, so most people have today off work. Whether you’re working or not, and whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, take a moment to remember those men and women who died serving in our military. Each and every one is a hero and gave his/her life for our freedom or someone else’s. They deserve to be remembered. As for television tonight, it’s a pretty slow night, so check out the two shows Kyle & I think you should be watching tonight. 🙂

longmire527smallI’m so excited for new TV on A&E tonight! One of my favorite new shows last summer, Longmire, returns tonight. If you missed it last season, the show is based on the Walt Longmire Mystery novels by best-selling author Craig Johnson. Sheriff Walt Longmire lives in Wyoming, and last season, he had to come to terms with the loss of his wife (she died before the series started, but the effects of her death were still dictating his life). He and his daughter were having issues because of how closed off he’d become, and he realized he’d checked out of life so much that his deputy Branch was going up against him in the race for sheriff. And Vic Moretti (played by Katee Sackhoff, Battlestar Galactica) was still a fairly new deputy but had quickly become his right hand “man.” Finally, there was Henry Standing Bear (played by the always delightful Lou Diamond Phillips), who owns the local bar and is Walt’s loyal friend.

In the new season, Walt is back after coming to terms with the loss of his wife. He’ll fight for re-election against Branch. Vic will be visited by the ghost of a past she’d rather forget. Cady (Walt’s daughter) will search for answers about her mother’s murder. Henry will be drawn into the story when Walt’s possible connection to the death of his wife’s killer continues to come to light. I can’t wait to see how Walt & co. face each challenge and story—all while getting some great crime/sheriff stories as well!

On tonight’s episode, “Unquiet Mind,” after a prison transfer goes awry, Walt pursues a serial killer and his fellow escapees who have taken hostages up a mountain.

To see if this quiet country sheriff can capture your heart, tune in to A&E at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Bachelorette, The Goodwin Games, The Glades, & Diners, Drive-ins & Dives.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/12/12

Saturday—night, especially—had to have been one of the worst days/nights I’ve had in a long time, so I’m incredibly glad today is a new day. It’s the start of a week packed full of new television, including some big episodes, like the series finale of The Closer. So as always, we’re here to tell you what we think you should be watching. 🙂

One of my favorite new shows of the summer has been A&E’s Longmire. If you’re a fan of Justified, you might very well enjoy this show, too. The lead character, Walt Longmire, isn’t as quick to draw his gun as Raylan Givens, but the shows kind of remind me a lot of each other in some respects. Maybe it’s just because the leads wear cowboy hats, but I think a lot of it is that Walt & Raylan both tend to like to work alone as much as they can and don’t necessarily like to play strictly by the rules. All season, we’ve gotten glimpses of how Walt’s past. We know his wife has been dead a year, and we know she had cancer…but from what Scott & I have been able to piece together, something else happened that killed her. What, we don’t know, but we should find out more tonight. Last week, Walt finally confronted both his daughter and his deputy—and opponent for sheriff!—about sleeping together. It was really intense…but this week, it looks like Walt and Branch will come to blows over it all. Exciting stuff! I’m so happy this show has been renewed already. It really is a great addition to the summer schedule.

On tonight’s episode, “Unfinished Business,” Walt investigates the murder of a teenager who was one of four boys acquitted of raping a developmentally disabled Cheyenne girl. When another boy is killed, all signs point to the crime being an act of revenge by the girl’s brother. But Walt is not convinced by the circumstantial evidence and must find the real killer before someone else ends up dead. And the arrival of a detective from Denver forces Walt to finally confront the reality of his wife’s death. Michael McGrady (Southland) guest stars.

Don’t miss it tonight on A&E at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Longmire @ Clicker.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/24/12

Today is supposed to be the hottest day of the year so far for us here in the Kansas City area. I know it’s really warm in a lot of the country, too. I hope everyone finds ways to stay cool! Tonight, sit in fromt of the fan or air conditioner and put your feet up, because there’s some fantastic TV on! Here’s what we think you should be watching. 🙂

Rather than go with my normal pick for tonight, I’m going to recommend the show that comes on after it… A&E’s new drama, Longmire is tons better than I’d thought it might be. When it first came out, I was worried it would be set in the past, too “western” for me, or whatever. But my husband & I sat down together today to watch the pilot, and we ended up watching all three episodes. If you haven’t heard of it, basically the show is set in Wyoming and is based on the Walt Longmire Mystery novels by best-selling author Craig Johnson. It stars Australian actor Robert Taylor (I couldn’t tell for the life of me that he is Australian. lol) as Walt Longmire, the charismatic, dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming, along with Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips (who is sorely underused, imo), Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman, and Adam Bartley.

Walt’s wife died a year before the show starts, and the whole year, he’s been kind of…struggling. He’s not really been giving a hundred percent to the job, so much so that one of his deputies has decided to run against him for sheriff. We also learned in the 2nd episode that Walt’s adult daughter (an attorney) is secretly dating (…sleeping with…) that same deputy. That just ticks me off. lol Katee Sackhoff is great. Her character, Vic, is a relatively new hire there at the department. Then they also have one other deputy who is honestly one of the most inept men… lol But together, they are fun. Lou Diamond Phillips plays Henry Standing Bear, a friend & confidant to Walt. I adore him, and I love his character so far.

I’m interested to see how they handle Walt’s daughter & the deputy. Obviously Walt has to win the reelection or the show wouldn’t be what it is. Whether or not they will drag it out the entire 10-episode season, I have no idea, but I can’t wait to see more.

On tonight’s episode, “The Cancer,” Longmire seeks Henry Standing Bear’s assistance in a case involving two dead bodies and a Mexican drug cartel.

Get lost in the beautiful scenery & fun stories tonight on A&E at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Longmire @ Clicker.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/DVRing Cupcake Wars, The Glades, Food Network Star, Falling Skies, & The Great Escape.
