Jenny’s Choice
Last week’s Chicago PD was one of the most intensely emotional episodes yet. The case involved a baby found in a duffel bag filled with rocks on the beach. She was darn near dead, but Dr. Manning (from Chicago PD) was able to nurse her back to health. There were a lot of twists and turns, and the police suspected almost everyone – from the surprise birth father who didn’t even know the seventeen-year-old birth mother was pregnant, to the birth mother’s parents, to the unlicensed midwife – finally arresting the adoptive father, who quickly proclaimed he’d done it, that he was drunk when his young son (9 or 10 years old) wanted to go out and look at the stars and he’d taken the baby with them and then forgot her outside, so when he thought she was dead, he tried to get rid of the body, rather than call it in to the police.
I caught on pretty quick that he was covering for someone, and I guessed right that it was for their son, who was around eight or nine years old. Thankfully, I guessed wrong about the boy’s motive. I’d assumed (given that I’ve seen it all too often on shows like this) that the boy was a sociopath or whatever and had done it on purpose. Unfortunately, it was just a horrible, horrible accident. The boy had woken up to go look at the stars and wanted his new sister to see them, so he’d taken her outside with him. When his parents figured out what happened, they were just trying to protect him. And at the end of the episode, the teenage birth mother, who had turned 18 a week after the baby’s birth, stood up to her parents (her mother was a piece of work and father had little spine going up against his wife…) and decided to visit the baby in the hospital and actually be a mother.
Meanwhile, Voight was surprised to learn that his son had come into town and hadn’t visited or called. Given the description of the season finale, I have a feeling this is a clue that something is up with his son. He seemed to have turned his life around once Voight forced him into the military. He has a baby and a wife now, and he seemed to have grown up. But now… I guess we’ll see! Also, tonight is the planted pilot for Chicago Justice, so we get to meet two (at least?) of the new cast members: Assistant State Attorney Peter Stone, played by Philip Winchester (who recently starred in the short-lived The Player and was a lead in Strike Back), and State Attorney Mark Jefferies, played by Carl Weathers (Colony, Brothers, In the Heat of the Night).
On tonight’s episode, “Justice,†Burgess goes on trial after accidentally shooting an unarmed African-American honor student; the same man who sent Voight to prison is assigned to help defend Burgess.
