scorpion321smallOn last week’s Scorpion, Walter was in a car accident, which wasn’t a big deal, but because he’d hit his head, he had to go to the hospital. While waiting, he met a young girl who was there to get a heart transplant. Unfortunately, before that could happen, a patient was rushed in and Toby recognized the symptoms and convinced the doctors to test his theory. When they did, they realized L.A.’s blood supply had been tainted. They had to race to figure out what happened, and they realized the man who’d created the vaccine to combat the disease (which had previously been eradicated) had purposefully tainted the blood supply by mixing up the labels of the clean blood and the tainted blood that was supposed to go to research. He wanted to be able to sell all the vaccine his company had made before the disease was eradicated. Fortunately, they were able to fix the problem and rescue the clean blood before it was locked away for government testing and just in time to save the little girl who needed the heart transplant. And Walter learned a big lesson about living life and having fun instead of being serious and working all the time. One funny story line was that after Sly’s big win on Price is Right, no other game show will let him come on as a contestant. Poor guy. He really wants to raise enough money to sponsor the hospital wing in Megan’s name.

On tonight’s episode, “Djibouti Call,” while on a secret mission in Djibouti, Africa, with his new Homeland protégé, Tim Armstrong (Scott Porter, Heart of Dixie, Friday Night Lights), Cabe is captured, and Team Scorpion must save him.

Find out how the team rescues Cabe tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Cake Wars, Lucifer, NCIS: LA, Blindspot, & Castle.

wahlburgers2016smallOne of my favorite family reality shows, Wahlburgers, is back tonight on a 1-hour season premiere. Last season, it was more of the same for this fun family: Mark tortured Paul, Paul created a new burger for some football friends, Mark and Donnie got to spend time together in NYC when their schedules overlapped, and new Wahlburger restaurants opened in Toronto and Coney Island. Not to mention we got lots of Alma and brother Bob. I can’t wait to find out what’s in store for the Walberg family this go round.

On tonight’s episode, “Directing Drama,” when Johnny Drama looks to take his music career to the next level, Mark suggests Drama make a music video that Mark himself will direct. The music video will be Drama’s Wahlburgers Rap Jingle and shot down in New Orleans where Mark is filming his latest movie. Mark enlists music mogul Sean “P Diddy” Combs and movie director Peter Berg to help mentor Drama. But filming hits a rough patch when Drama is not comfortable with the alter ego “Drama Boy” that Mark creates for him.

Check out the crazy fun tonight on A&E at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Rosewood, Hell’s Kitchen, Property Brothers, & CSI: Cyber.

lucifier125smallTonight, FOX kicks off its new crime drama with a devilish twist, Lucifer. Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Eliis, Rush, Merlin) is bored and tired of running things in Hell, so he decides to retire and live on Earth. He now resides in Los Angeles, where he owns an upscale nightclub called Lux. Lucifer has a unique effect on the people he meets – they suddenly want to tell him their deepest desires and darkest secrets.

A murder outside of the nightclub causes Lucifer to cross paths with Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German, Chicago Fire). Chloe recently separated from her ex, Dan (Kevin Alejandro, The Returned), and seems to be the only person impervious to Lucifer’s charms. Lucifer is intrigued by this and decides to use his talents to help her solve cases.

Other folks in Lucifer’s “life” include demon best friend/confidant Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt, The Librarians), angel Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside, Suits), who was sent by God to get Lucifer to return to his post in Hell, and therapist Kim Martin (Rachael Harris, Suits).

I enjoyed tonight’s premiere a lot more than I expected to. From the ads, I thought this was going to be some kind of Old Hollywood noir detective show, but that is certainly not the case. Lucifer is charming, and I like how he is completely honest about who he is – even if folks don’t necessarily believe him. It’s not like it is a secret that they are going to constantly keep trying to hide. While the cop/not-a-cop premise is something we have seen many times on TV, this has a bit of a supernatural twist. I like the chemistry between Lucifer and Chloe, and the show has the right balance of drama and humor.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” Lucifer befriends a troubled pop diva and witnesses her murder, which triggers him to seek revenge on her killer.

Check out the series premiere tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Supergirl, Superstore, Telenovela, The X-Files, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin, and The Magicians.

themagicianssmallAfter tonight’s Childhood’s End finale, Syfy is giving viewers a sneak peek at the upcoming series The Magicians, which premieres on January 25. Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph, Manhattan) is a bit of a wallflower – he’s always felt different and would rather get lost in the world of his favorite fantasy book series rather than party with his friends. One day Quentin and best friend Julia (Stella Maeve, Chicago PD) find themselves magically transported onto the campus of the mysterious Brakebills University, just in time for a magical aptitude admissions test. They soon discover talents they never knew they possessed and a desire to attend this school they never even knew existed.

Brakebills University is the upstate New York equivalent of Hogwarts, where twenty-somethings from all over come to hone their magical skills. However, there are some dark, sinister forces at work, and almost all of the third year students have either died or disappeared without any explanation.

Quentin’s new classmates include roommate William “Penny” Adiyodi (Arjun Gupta, How to Get Away with Murder), who always seems annoyed with the others; Alice Quinn (Olivia Taylor Dudley, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension), who comes from a talented family of magicians but is more concerned in discovering what happened to her brother; Eliot Waugh (Hale Appleman, Smash), who has been at Brakebills for a while and seems to know everything that’s going on; and Margo Hanson (Summer Bishil, Lucky 7), who loves to party.

The pilot introduces us to this fantastical world and characters, sets up a really interesting mystery, and leaves us with a tense, creepy cliffhanger that made me really anxious for the show’s return in January!

On tonight’s episode, “Special Preview,” a group of twentysomethings studying magic in New York discover a real-life fantasy world that poses a great threat to humanity in this drama adapted from Lev Grossman’s book series.

Check out the preview of this new series tonight on Syfy at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Survivor, American Horror Story: Hotel, and Childhood’s End.

childhoodsend1214smallTonight, Syfy kicks off its 3-night miniseries event, Childhood’s End, which is an adaption of Arthur C. Clark’s 1953 novel of the same name. Mysterious alien ships belonging to a race known as the Overlords appear in the sky all around the globe. However, the unseen supervisor known as Karellen (Charles Dance, Game of Thrones) promises they are there peacefully and promise to help fix the Earth’s problems. Karellen chooses Missouri farmer Ricky (Mike Vogel, Under the Dome) to be his “Blue Collar Prophet” and bridge between humans and the Overlords. The Overlords waste no time turning the Earth into the utopia they promised – achieving world peace, ending hunger, curing disease, etc. But is all of this too good to be true? Some freedom fighters believe so and don’t trust Karellen – especially since he won’t reveal himself to them.

The original novel was broken into three parts, with a time jump in between each one. Syfy is following the same structure with this series. Each night can be thought of as a 2-hour film in an overall saga. I had never read the original novel but have seen the entire series, and I would say expect the unexpected. The series has some really shocking and creepy moments (usually in the closing moments of each episode) and also brings up some thought-provoking topics.

The series also stars Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black), Daisy Betts (Persons Unknown), Ashley Zuckerman (Manhattan), Osy Ikhile (The Fear), Charlotte Nicdao (Please Like Me), and Haley Magnus (Home and Away).

I had the opportunity to speak with some of the cast/creators of the miniseries at San Diego Comic-Con. You can find videos of these interviews at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Night One – The Overlords,” an alien presence arrives on Earth with the intention to end all suffering and guide humanity into a utopia. But not everyone is so quick to believe these mysterious visitors are as peaceful as they seem.

Catch the beginning of this 3-part special series tonight on Syfy at 8/7c.
