Tonight, the TBS comedy, The Detour, returns for a second season. The first season was very similar to National Lampoon’s Vacation – the Parker family was on a road trip to Florida under the guise of a family vacation, but patriarch Nate was really on a mission to expose his employer’s deadly plans. Everything that could have gone wrong during the trip did go wrong…and so much more! Nate ended up missing his whistle-blowing opportunity, but it actually worked out for the better, as he was wrong and would have just ended up looking like a fool. However, Nate did learn that partner Robin had some major secret that she was hiding, and twins Delilah and Jared learned that their parents weren’t actually married.

The second season picks up a short time later. Nate is still out of a job, and the family is living in a trailer park in Syracuse. However, a new job opportunity in New York City will send the family on a whole new series of misadventures and Robin to a city that holds many secrets she’s been trying to hide. As I watched the first half of tonight’s double-episode premiere, I was quickly reminded of how much I missed this show! I was laughing out loud throughout. I just love this show’s irreverent humor that doesn’t worry about being politically correct. I am so excited to see what craziness awaits the Parkers in New York City!

On tonight’s first episode, “The City,” Nate is offered a new job in New York City, triggering the family’s move from Syracuse to the Big Apple. Then, in “The Club,” Robin’s ex lures her back to her wild side by visiting a club from their past, sparking Nate’s jealousy in the process. Meanwhile, the kids meet Nate’s new boss.

Find out how the move to NYC goes for the Parkers tonight on TBS starting at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, American Housewife, Fresh Off the Boat, The Real O’Neals, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Wall, This Is Us, New Girl, The Mick, Bones, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Switched at Birth, Face Off, Teachers, and Chrisley Knows Best.

Tonight TBS kicks off its new dark comedy Search Party, which centers around a group of self-absorbed twenty-somethings who find themselves mixed up in the mystery surrounding the disappearance of one of their former college classmates, Chantal. Dory (Alia Shawkat, Arrested Development) feels like a doormat – she’s got a thankless job working as an assistant to a rich housewife and is trapped in a relationship with boyfriend Drew (John Reynolds, Stranger Things), who only cares about his own needs. Despite having little memory of the missing girl, Dory makes it her mission to find Chantal in hopes of adding some sort of meaning and purpose to her life. She tries to rile up her friends to help with the search party, but actress Portia (Meredith Hagner, Royal Pains), narcissist Elliott (John Early, Your Main Thing), and boyfriend Drew seem more concerned with their images and dramatically posting to social media about how Chantal’s disappearance has affected them, rather than actually doing something to help. But this search party could be a way for Dory to get closer to journalist ex-boyfriend Julian (Brandon Michael Hall), who still makes her light up when he enters the room.

TBS will be airing two episodes of the 10-episode first season every night this week from 11pm-midnight (ET/PT). In addition, all 10 episodes will be made available for binging via On Demand. I checked out the first episode, and while I didn’t find the show laugh-out-loud funny, I did find some humorous moments, and it made me curious to check out more to learn what’s really going on with Chantal’s disappearance and to see if any of Dory’s self-obsessed friends have any redeeming qualities.

On tonight’s first episode, “The Mysterious Disappearance of Chantal Witherbottom,” when Dory discovers that her friend, Chantal, has gone missing, she becomes obsessed with finding out what happened, even though her boyfriend, Drew, and friends, Elliott and Portia, couldn’t care less.

Then, in “The Woman Who Knew Too Much,” Dory begins to doubt whether she saw Chantal the night before, but an offbeat realtor claims that she has the proof that Dory is looking for.

Check out the first two episodes tonight on TBS at 11/10c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Man With a Plan, Timeless, Gotham, Lucifer, Supergirl, Jane the Virgin, and People of Earth.

peopleofearthsmallLast week, TBS kicked off its new comedy People of Earth with a double-episode premiere. Journalist Ozzie Graham wrote an article about an alien abductee support group, but as he interviewed the participants, he started having memories of his own, realizing that he too had been abducted. He quit his job at Glint Enterprises and decided to stick with the group a little longer to learn more, getting a new job at the local Beacon Gazette. While the other participants each only had an encounter with a single species of alien, Ozzie seems to have met all three: a Gray, a Reptilian, and an Albino. In his memory, he saw the three aliens joining forces to stage a car accident to cover up his abduction. Ozzie’s former boss Jonathan (who is secretly a Reptilian) volunteers to fix things, but his superiors send another Reptilian, Kurt, to clean up the situation. However, Kurt is accidentally run over by support group leader Gina, who drove off unaware of what she did. Then we saw a local cop covering up the dead alien body.

I’m enjoying this show on many levels. First there’s the humor with the support group. There are a lot of crazy characters, and their interactions, stories and how they try to out-do each other is a lot of fun. Second, the bickering aliens are hilarious, especially Jeff the Grey. And finally, I’m really interested in the ongoing mystery of what these aliens want, who knows about them, and if there are any other people who are secretly aliens. I’m really digging the creative new direction TBS has taken with its comedies over the last year. This is another highly entertaining one!

On tonight’s episode, “Acceptance,” Ozzie helps Richard face his broken marriage; Yvonne and Gerry investigate a mysterious cover up; Jonathan Walsh delivers some upsetting news to Jeff and Don.

Laugh along with these new alien abductees tonight on TBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Man With a Plan, Gotham, Lucifer, Supergirl, and Jane the Virgin.

brooklyn991018smallEvery season on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, we get a new Halloween episode. They’re a lot of fun because it’s always some sort of competition. In season one, Jake bet Holt he could “steal” his Medal of Valor. In season two, it was Captain Holt’s watch. Last year, it was team vs team, as they competed to see who could first get to a crown held under lock and key in an interrogation room. So what will they come up with this season? I have no idea, but I do know it’s going to be funny!

On tonight’s episode, “Halloween IV,” it’s Halloween in the Nine-Nine, which can only mean one thing: heist time. This year, the squad members pull out all the stops in their quest to win the new defending title of “Ultimate Detective Slash Genius.” Lines are drawn and plans are made, but there can only be one reigning champion.

See who wins bragging rights tonight on FOX at 8/7c.

The Detour-Ep 102 - The Tank25265_003Tonight, TBS kicks off the new comedy series The Detour with back-to-back episodes. The series was created by husband and wife team/former The Daily Show correspondents Samantha Bee and Jason Jones. Nate Parker (Jason Jones) is having some financial troubles and problems at work that he wants to keep secret from his wife Robin (Natalie Zea, Justified). So he decides to secretly change the family’s vacation plans. Instead of flying from Upstate New York to Florida, they will now be taking a 17-hour road trip instead. But along the way, everything that can go wrong does, and this leads to a lot of wacky misadventures for the Parker family.

The Parkers get into some really crazy situations, but the humor tends more toward sophomoric and gross-out (this is probably not a show to watch with the kids around), but tonight’s premiere episodes had me laughing out loud throughout. The series is like National Lampoon’s Vacation meets The Hangover – the first episode sets up a framing device around the trip that will likely be revisited toward the end of the season. Jason Jones and Natalie Zea have great chemistry and play well off one another. However, the two kids – 14-year-old daughter Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich) and her dimwitted younger brother Jared (Liam Carroll) – are absolutely hilarious and often steal the scenes. I’m really looking forward to checking out more episodes, and the great news is that the series has already been picked up for a second season, so there’s a lot more to come.

On tonight’s first episode, “The Pilot,” a family begins their vacation drive from New York to Florida. And then in “The Hotel,” the Parkers are forced to stay overnight at a motel when their van needs to be repaired.

Meet the Parkers tonight on TBS at 9/8c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 9:30/8:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Supergirl, Castle, Blindspot, Gotham, Lucifer, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin, Bates Motel, The Magicians, Hunters, and Better Call Saul.
