Tonight, FOX kicks off the new family adventure series, The Gifted, which is set in the Marvel universe of The X-Men. Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer, Shots Fired, True Blood), the tough district attorney in charge of prosecuting crimes committed by mutants, suddenly finds himself on the other side of the law when his teenage children, Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind, The Goldbergs, Gotham) and Andy (Percy Hynes White, Night at the Museum 3) discover they have mutant powers. Reed and separated wife/nurse Caitlin (Amy Acker, Person of Interest, Angel) take their kids on the run, where they encounter the mutant underground, led by John Proudstar/Thunderbird (Blair Redford, Satisfaction). The other mutants include Marcos Diaz/Eclipse (Sean Teale, Reign), who uses his powers to help smuggle mutants into Mexico; Clarice Fong/Blink (Jamie Chung, Gotham), who has the ability to teleport; and Lorna Dane/Polaris (Emma Dumont, Aquarius), who has magnetic abilities (wonder who she could be related to!). The series also stars Coby Bell (Burn Notice) as a man who struggles with the cold-blooded requirements of his job of rounding up the mutants.

This is one of the few new fall shows I haven’t had a chance to check out, but at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I got to talk with some of the cast about the series, and they got me really excited to check out tonight’s premiere. (You can find the videos from those interviews at NoReruns.net) The series is written by Matt Nix (APB, Burn Notice), the pilot was directed by Bryan Singer — who also directed several of the X-Men films — and the executive producers include Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb, and Jim Chory, all of whom have had extensive experience with other Marvel TV shows and X-Men films. So there is a lot of great talent both in front of and behind the camera for this series, which makes it very promising. Also, FX recently did an excellent job with its X-Men universe series Legion, so I’m hoping for more of the same with FOX.

On tonight’s premiere, “eXposed,” a suburban couple’s lives are rocked by the discovery that their children possess mutant powers, forcing the family to go on the lam from a hostile government and seek help from an underground network of mutants.

Meet the newest mutants tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Good Doctor, The Big Bang Theory, 9JKL, Me, Myself & I, and Lucifer.

Tonight, FOX kicks off the new paranormal comedy Ghosted, starring Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) and Craig Robinson (The Office) as mismatched partners recruited by a top-secret government agency to search for a missing agent. Max (Scott) is a brilliant but disgraced astrophysicist who now works at a bookstore. The former Stanford professor lost his credibility after he started making claims that his wife had been abducted by aliens. Meanwhile, Leroy (Robinson) was the best missing persons detective the LAPD ever had, but now he’s a divorced dad working as a mall cop. Heading up the Bureau Underground is Captain Ava Lafrey (Ally Walker, Colony, Longmire), technician Barry Shaw (Adeel Akhtar, Unforgotten, The Night Manager), and Agent Annie (Amber Stevens West, The Carmichael Show).

The series has a bit of an X-Files/Mulder & Scully vibe with the believer and the skeptic partnered up to investigate paranormal cases. Adam Scott and Craig Robinson have great chemistry and comedic timing, which makes this show a lot of fun. There is also a bit of an 80s throwback vibe to the show, especially in the soundtrack and score. The end of tonight’s premiere definitely leaves you wanting to see more, and I look forward to seeing what strange cases and misadventures these two get involved in in future episodes.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” a key member of a top-secret government agency goes missing, so cynical former detective Leroy and genius “true believer” Max are recruited to find him. The two polar opposites must work together to find the agent, while uncovering possible alien activity and chilling “unexplained” paranormal events in their own city of Los Angeles.

See if this new comedy’s for you tonight on FOX at 8:30/7:30c.

It’s going to be a big season of change on Hawaii Five-0. Last season ended with the team shutting down as much of the human trafficking ring and rescuing as many young girls as they could, but Kono couldn’t leave it alone. It hit her hard, and she decided she was going to go to the mainland and see if she could take out some more of the traffickers and rescue more of the kidnapped girls. Also, Chin Ho was offered a job by Federal Prosecutor Robert Coughlin (who originally went after Five-0 using Abby as his inside man): to lead his own Five-0-type team in San Francisco, where Abby used to live. Over the summer, we learned that both Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park had been let go from the show, so we know that Kono is still off trying to shut down the traffickers and Chin accepted the job, taking him, Abby, and Sarah to San Francisco. As much as I hate to see them go (and I do TRULY hate to see them go, both the actors & the characters), this is much better than killing them off or putting them in WitSec (looking at you, Criminal Minds!).

The show was quick to fill their spots. First, Kono’s husband, Adam, will stick around, as Ian Anthony Dale has been upped to a series regular. Despite his past and family history, Steve will recruit him to help with a specific case later in the season, and I believe he stays. Meaghan Rath (Being Human) joins the cast in the premiere as a lifeguard who was kicked out of the police academy, despite being a strong contender. Think of her as the female Steve McGarrett — not afraid to bend or even break the rules to get done what needs to be done if it’s something that is right. And finally, relative newcomer Beulah Koale will join as a Navy SEAL who just returned (like, DAYS before) from serving and asks McGarett for a job. It’ll be interesting to see how Steve, Danny, and the others handle the newbies and having Adam around more! (Especially how Steve & Danny handle having a female Steve there. LOL)

On tonight’s episode, “’A’ole e ‘olelo mai ana ke ahi ua ana ia (Fire Will Never Say That It Has Had Enough),” McGarrett and Danny recruit Tani Rey to join the task force when diabolical hacker Aaron Wright (guest star Joey Lawrence) releases a dangerous arsonist from prison. Also, Randy Couture and Andrew Lawrence also return as guest stars.

Don’t miss the exciting premiere tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

Tonight, after being off the air for over 11 years, Will & Grace returns to NBC to kick off the show’s ninth season. I was a big fan of the series when it originally aired and thought they actually did a great job of wrapping the series up in the finale. However, within the opening moments of tonight’s season premiere, the characters have a fun time quickly and concisely letting viewers know which things from the series finale are no longer canon. After that, the show doesn’t feel like it has missed a beat in the decade it was off the air. Will (Erick McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) are still lonely roommates, Jack (Sean Hayes) still makes his fun entrances and inappropriate comments, and Karen (Megan Mullally) is still drunk, wealthy, and “working” as Grace’s assistant.

I checked out the first three episodes of the season, and the writers have done an excellent job at making this reboot feel not only the same as the original show but have also brought it into the modern day, tackling many issues prevalent in today’s political climate. The cast hasn’t lost any of their chemistry, and the jokes and double-entendres flow rapidly. Fans of the original series will certainly be pleased to welcome this show back into their lives!

On tonight’s premiere, “11 Years Later,” Will and Grace both falter when their political beliefs are put to the test; and Jack and Karen help them hide their secret shame from each other, but the truth finally comes out.

Welcome the show back tonight on NBC at 9/8c.

Like Monday night, one of my picks tonight is another new military-action drama. This time it’s CBS’s SEAL Team, starring David Boreanaz (Bones, Angel). He plays the “respected, intense leader” of a Tier One Navy SEAL team (ergo the title of the show…) that deploys on covert missions worldwide at a moment’s notice. Along with Hayes, the team consists of: Ray (Neil Brown Jr, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), the man who’s been there the longest and with whom Hayes shares an ingrained shorthand, and Sonny (AJ Buckley, CSI: NY), an exceptional, loyal soldier with a checkered past who still combats self-destructive tendencies. Clay Spenser (Max Thieriot, Bates Motel, Texas Rising) is a young, multi-lingual second-generation SEAL with heavy drive and dedication, and he’s undergoing additional rigorous training in the hopes of joining Hayes’s select team. Also vita to the team are CIA analyst Mandy Ellis (Jessica Pare, Mad Men, Jack & Bobby) who has sacrificed everything in her drive to root out evil and take down terrorists, and Davis (Toni Trucks, Barbershop, Made in Jersey), a no-nonsense, take-charge logistics officer and unofficial den mother responsible for outfitting the team with the necessary gear for each mission.

I really enjoyed this pilot. There’s a lot of action, a lot of family time that is far from without drama. It out of all the like-minded shows this season reminds me of The Unit, which is one of my all-time favorite shows. I’ve been excited to share this one with my family and can’t wait to see the pilot again and new episodes myself.

On tonight’s episode, “Tip of the Spear,” an elite unit of Navy SEALs must navigate their professional and personal lives as they execute dangerous, high-stakes missions.

Check out this military drama tonight on CBS at 9/8c.
