fearthewalkingdead823smallThe return of The Walking Dead is still six weeks away, but to help fill the zombie void, tonight AMC kicks off the new prequel/spin-off series, Fear the Walking Dead. In the original series, we were thrown right into the thick of the zombie apocalypse as Rick Grimes awoke from his coma, but we never got to see what the original outbreak was like. This new series takes a look at how those events unfolded, through the eyes of a whole new group of survivors in Los Angeles.

The cast of characters includes divorced high school English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis, Gang Related), his free-spirited ex-wife Liza (Elizabeth Rodriguez, Orange is the New Black), and their son Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2), as well as Travis’s fiancee Madison Clark (Kim Dickens, House of Cards) and her two kids — the highly-ambitious Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey, The 100) and college drop-out Nick (Frank Dillane, Sense8), who also has a drug problem. Joining them are immigrant barber Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades, Gideon’s Crossing), his devoutly-religious wife Griselda (Patricia Reyes Spíndola, The Color of Passion), and their first-generation American daughter Ofelia (Mercedes Mason, 666 Park Avenue).

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the initial stages of the apocalypse are like, the panic and mayhem that ensues, and how a very different group comes together and figures out how to survive.

On tonight’s 90-minute premiere, “Pilot,” a dysfunctional blended family is forced together when they realize a reported virus is actually the start of the zombie apocalypse.

To see how the zombie apocalypse began, tune in to AMC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, The Strain, The Great Food Truck Race, The Last Ship, Falling Skies, and The Brink.

review2015smallReview has continued to be highly entertaining in its second season. Last week, TV critic Forrest MacNeil had three more hilarious life experiences to review. First up was “being falsely accused” — and his assistants arranged for him to take the fall for setting a sorority house on fire. It looked like Forrest might really go to jail; however, the real perpetrator was caught and he was exonerated. After that, a young student asked Forrest to review what it was like to “sleep with your teacher,” which Forrest took literally. He found the young man’s married teacher Suzanne and had sex with her on camera. And for his final review of last week, Forrest took a look at what it was like to be a little person. He retrofit his office with giant furniture and a comically large phone and walked around on his knees like Dorf. As he tried to cook a meal for his new girlfriend Suzanne in his father’s house, Forrest accidentally started a fire. However, the fire extinguisher was too high on the wall for a little person, so he just made his way out of the house and let it burn, cursing the plight of the little person the whole time. Meanwhile, he could have just stood up, grabbed the extinguisher, and put out the fire while it was still small.

I really enjoy the serialized nature of this series — how the consequences of each of Forrest’s reviews continues to build off the previous ones. And I love how earnestly and seriously Forrest takes his reviews. It is hilarious how clueless he is to the wreck he is leaving in his wake, both to his own life and to others around him. Will Forrest’s father forgive him for burning down his house? Where will Forrest and his dad live now? Will they move in with Suzanne? And will Forrest ever find a review so bad that he’ll finally utilize the two vetoes he’s been given this season?

On tonight’s episode, “Cult, Perfect Body,” Forrest starts a cult; and tries to sculpt a perfect body by undergoing a series of enhancements.

To see Forrest’s crazy antics tonight, tune in to Comedy Central at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Under the Dome, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, Married, and Documentary Now!.

young&hungry819smallTonight, the ABC Family comedy Young & Hungry returns for the second half of its second season. When we last left off, Gabi found out that Josh had been keeping the fact that he had feelings for her a secret for the past 3 months and that Cooper had also lied to cover this up. So as Cooper and Josh (literally) fought over Gabi, she decided she couldn’t take it anymore and didn’t want either one of them. She eventually made her peace with both guys, and when Josh asked her for a second chance to take her out on a date, she thought about it. However, when Gabi was offered an apprenticeship with a chef in Switzerland, she took it, leaving Josh a goodbye message on his cell phone.

So how will things have changed when Gabi returns from her internship? Will she go back to working with Josh? Will she decide to give him that date he asked for? Or have either or both of them already moved on and found someone else? I’m looking forward to more fun episodes of the series, but I hope this show doesn’t drag on the “will they or won’t they?” as long as Melissa & Joey did!

On tonight’s episode, “Young & How Gabi Got Her Job Back,” Gabi returns from Switzerland and gets a new job with Josh’s neighbor. Before long, Josh worries that his neighbor is attracted to Gabi, so he resorts to snooping on them.

See what happens when Josh spies on Gabi tonight on ABC Family at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Celebrity Wife Swap, MasterChef, Kevin From Work, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Impastor, Flipping Out, Suits, Mr. Robot, and Twinning.

clipped818smallTonight, the first season of Clipped comes to an end on TBS. Last week, the gang’s former math teacher came to the shop, which upset Ben, who still held a grudge for how Mr. Painter had embarrassed him when he split his pants during class. However, at the funeral, Ben split his pants again while trying to gloat to the dead body. Meanwhile, Joy was looking for a sign as to whether or not she should try to fix her marriage. Mo was hopeful this meant he finally had a chance with her, but when Joy discovered she was pregnant, she decided it meant she should try to fix her marriage. However, after some reflection, she ultimately decided the pregnancy was a sign to end her marriage, which she did, but Mo was too scared to make his move.

When this series first started, I was afraid the Boston accents were going to grate on me, but I’ve really enjoyed this first season (save for the four sisters who live in the apartment across the street). How will this first season come to a close? Will Mo finally make his move and tell Joy how he feels about her? And what does the future hold for the rest of the gang? Will tonight’s season finale end in some kind of cliffhanger, and will the show be back for a second season?

On tonight’s episode, “Reunion,” the gang revisit their adolescence at a high school reunion. Elsewhere, Joy is stuck at the barbershop with Lonnie as he waits for his date.

See how the reunion goes tonight on TBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Zoo, Hollywood Game Night, Playing House, Face Off, Scream, and Another Period.

humans816smallTonight, the first season of AMC’s sentient robot drama Humans comes to a close. Last week, Karen confronted Niska, telling her they were a mistake and needed to be destroyed, but in the scuffle that followed, she accidentally shot and killed George. Elsewhere, Leo and Fred tracked down Max’s body, but it was in bad shape. Meanwhile, Joe returned home, agreeing to sleep on the couch, and was soon joined by the first of many houseguests, Niska. Shortly afterward, Leo and Fred arrived, and everyone got to work trying to save Max’s “life.” They managed to get him stable but had to wait 13 hours for Max to fully charge to see the extent of his damages. The synths spent this time bonding with various members of the Hawkins family.

When Max finally did wake up, he didn’t look good, and Leo realized that he was dying. Leo wanted to unlock the secret formula for creating sentient synths and try use that to save Max, but the others weren’t so sure. Meanwhile, Karen showed up, and Leo became an emotional wreck seeing this woman who looked exactly like his mother. She told Niska that she had a change of heart and that she had a safe place where they could all be together. However, just then a heavily armed strike force, led by Hobb, busted down the door.

What does Hobb want with the synths? Will he destroy them like he’s been told to, or does he have more sinister plans? Will the Hawkins family be able to rescue their new friends before it’s too late? Will these sentient synths use their secret to increase their numbers? And if so, how will the public react to this? Also, what’s up with that odd hand twitching thing Fred’s got going on?

I have really enjoyed this first season. While it’s been a slow burn, it’s set up some really interesting drama and thought-provoking storylines. I’m looking forward to seeing where the story will end tonight and what will be set up for the show’s second season.

On tonight’s episode, the synths are captured by Hobb, and only the Hawkins family can save them.

To see if the Hawkins family can save the synths, tune in to AMC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, The Strain, Food Network Star, The Last Ship, Falling Skies, Show Me a Hero, and The Brink.
