moonbeamcitysmallTonight, Comedy Central kicks off its new retro animated spoof of 1980s cop dramas, Moonbeam City. Rob Lowe stars as Dazzle Novak, an unpredictable, self-centered womanizer who works as a detective for the metropolitan police department. He’s constantly trying to prove that he’s the best cop on the force and is always playing a game of one-upmanship with equally competitive rival Rad Cunningham (Will Forte). Chief Pizzaz Miller (Elizabeth Banks) tries to reign in Dazzle but knows his unorthodox methods get the job done. Meanwhile, ambitious young rookie Chrysalis (Kate Mara) is trying to prove she’s ready to take on some cases.

The series is like Archer meets Miami Vice. It’s set in the flashy, neon style of the 1980s with a very synthy soundtrack. The cops of Moonbeam City don pastel suits as they chase down drug dealers, thieves, or whatever criminal element shows up that week. Dazzle is crude and politically incorrect but somehow manages to get the job done — and always finds time to hop into bed with some ladies. This is certainly not a show for kids — it’s very adult-themed and filled with sex, drugs, violence, and language.

While I wasn’t blown away by tonight’s episode, I did find a lot of humor, saw definite potential, and look forward to checking out more of the show. Rob Lowe is great, playing his typical larger-than-life Rob Lowe persona, while Will Forte gives an equally-entertaining performance as pretty much a less suave, more whiney Rob Lowe.

On tonight’s episode, “Mall Hath No Fury,” set in the mean streets of a crime-ridden metropolis, dashing but dim-witted detective Dazzle Novak is determined to get his “#1 Cop” mug back from his chief rival, Rad Cunningham, while an underworld kingpin wreaks havoc on Moonbeam City.

If you don’t want to wait, you can check out tonight’s premiere early on ComedyCentral.com.

Go back to the 1980s tonight on Comedy Central at 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, MasterChef, Young & Hungry, Kevin From Work, The League, You’re the Worst, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Impastor, and Twinning,

besttimeeversmallIn my opinion, Neil Patrick Harris is one of my generation’s funniest and likable TV personalities. Loved him as Doogie Howser, then as Barney, and he always does a fantastic job as host on the award shows. So when I heard about his new variety show, Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris, I was really excited. And the promos I’ve seen for it have given me high hopes that it’ll live up to the hype. The live, one-hour show comes complete with stunts, skits, pranks, audience interaction, musical numbers, giveaways, and unlimited surprises and is based on the popular British show Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. Hopefully the proven format from the UK will translate to success here in the States!

On tonight’s episode, Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon serves as this week’s celebrity guest announcer.

Check out the premiere of NPH’s new show tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing America’s Got Talent, Labor Games, & Chopped.

playinghouse98smallTonight, the (too short) second season of Playing House comes to a close with a double-dose of episodes. Last week, Maggie and Emma headed to Lake Kimmewah to spend the weekend together at their childhood vacation spot. It was the annual Kimmewah Kup paddle boat race, and the girls planned to beat their old nemeses the Custerman twins (played by the Sklar brothers). However, Maggie got upset that Emma was distracted during their gals weekend, constantly texting and calling her boyfriend Rabbi Dan. And when Dan showed up at the cabin, things only got worse. But, as always, the girls talked it out — their friendship can overcome any hurdles!

All I can say is that I love this show. It always makes me laugh out loud, and the relationship between Maggie and Emma feels so natural and real. They make you wish you were part of their world. If you haven’t checked out this show, what are you waiting for?! You can really jump in with any episode and also catch up via On Demand. I really hope tonight’s episodes aren’t the last 2 episodes of the series…and that USA won’t make us wait until December again to find out if the show’s coming back!

On tonight’s first episode, “Officer of the Year,” Emma organizes a policeman’s ball with help from Maggie and Rabbi Dan; Mark doesn’t have a date. And then in “Celebrate Me Scones,” Maggie surprises Emma with tickets to a special concert; and an old friend returns.

Catch the last two episodes of the season tonight on USA Network at 10/9c & 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Zoo, Hollywood Game Night, and Face Off.

rookieblue93smallWhat a rollercoaster this season of Rookie Blue has been, and tonight it all comes to a head. Last week, we watched as Andy started her usual panic mode when things got rough between her and Sam, but this time, Sam was the mature one and told Andy they should try something different this time, staying together. Andy admits that she was never going anywhere at all and that she loved him. I was swooning when Sam said he loved the baby and wanted more babies with Andy — a long time coming, but I’m certainly glad we got here. Elsewhere, we watched as Gail was put in the difficult position of testifying with her father putting pressure on her to lie so that Steve had a good alibi. Steve stood up and did the right thing by confessing to the judge and taking a plea deal. I’m interested in seeing what happens with Gail and Sophie, because it’d be a shame to see her end up with someone else.

On tonight’s finale, “Epiphanies,” as the restructuring of 15 Division looms, Andy and Sam’s wedding comes just in time for everyone to celebrate one last time. But when Andy is taken off-course by a hitchhiker and then stranded on the side of the road with a dying man, she finds herself with no way to get help — or let Sam know her situation. Will she be able to save the man’s life? And will she make it to her wedding?

Tune in to ABC at 10/9c to see how it all ends up.

I’ll also be watching Food Fighters, Chopped, and Mistresses.

rizzoliisles91smallBecause of my hospital stay in July, I got WAY backed up on TV. I’ve finally cleared 90% of it off, just in time for the new stuff to start. One of the things I was backed up on was Rizzoli & Isles, and I’m so glad I caught up in time for tonight’s summer finale. There’s been some fantastic stories this season. The most notable came the last couple of weeks, with the introduction of the fire at Jane’s apartment, which then led to Jane’s problem last week with her credit cards all being canceled…which in turn led them to realize someone has been stalking Jane and deliberately set fire to her apartment. Eek! There were a lot of great moments last week, though: the hippie guy at the beach who gave Jane the paper flower; Jane freaking out about the crowd and their cell phones when they arrested the bad guy; Korsak and Angela’s double date and subsequent explanation of how their s.o.’s know each other; the LA medical examiner, who was even stranger and nerdier than Maura can be.

After tonight’s summer finale, we’ll have the last six episodes of season 6 coming up sometime during the winter. Then next summer will be the final, shortened season for the show, which makes me sad. I am happy that the writers had a heads-up and can write a proper series finale. Thankfully, we have plenty of show to go before that day!

On tonight’s episode, “5:26,” when an old watch is found inside a balloon of cocaine in a dead woman’s stomach, figuring out its significance becomes the key to protecting Jane — and the people she loves.

See who’s after Jane and if they can catch him/her before it’s too late tonight on TNT at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Chopped, Playing House, & Hollywood Game Night.
